What is the best month to buy a new mattress?
The best month to buy a mattress is typically November, when the Black Friday sales are in full swing and you can expect discounts from nearly all our favorite mattress brands and retailers. December is also a good month to buy a mattress, as the Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales often bring discounts at the start of the month.
Black Friday used to be the time of year to get a mattress for less, with discounts to beat all the other deals. However, we've seen that shift, and Black Friday has some competition: Presidents' Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, and even July 4th, which has coincided with July Prime Day sales in recent years.
There's no month in which you won't find a mattress sale (really, there's always one somewhere), but summer does tend to be quiet in terms of deals. But if there's a summer mattress sale worth browsing, our deals experts will have found it, and we'll be tracking it here.
How to get the best mattress deal
To get the best mattress deal for you, the first thing to do is decide what you need from a mattress. Soft cushioning? Firm support? A cooler sleep feel? Deciding the kind of mattress you want before you start shopping prevents you from losing money on a bed that doesn't suit your needs.
When shopping for a good mattress deal, pay attention to the final price, not how big the discount is. There are many mattresses never sold at full price so although that huge saving looks promising, it might be distracting you from a final price you don't want to pay.
If you can, save your shopping for the peak sales days, such as Black Friday, President's Day, Memorial Day and Labor Day. This is when we see the widest scope of discounts, meaning you have plenty of options to choose from.
And don't ignore freebies. Many brands offer a free pillow or bedding with a mattress, saving you another purchase down the line.
Although on the flip-side, sometimes it's better to leave the freebie and opt for a mattress with a bigger percentage sale... particularly if you already have the best pillow for you.
Have a look on third-party sites, particularly if you're shopping for a budget mattress. Retailers such as Amazon and Walmart often have big discounts on cheap beds.
But don't forget the benefits. A sleep trial is important to avoid a costly mistake when buying a bed online and we think it's typically worth paying extra for a bed with a trial over sacrificing the trial for a saving — and getting stuck with a bad mattress.
Mattress deals — tips to remember
- Shop the peak sales: Labor Day, Black Friday/Cyber Monday, Memorial Day, and July 4th are generally the best time of the year for mattress deals. Black Friday used to stand out as the top mattress sale day by a long shot but lately Memorial Day has been catching up (and even Presidents' Day and Labor Day sales have been promising.)
- Look out for evergreen sales: Some of our favorite sleep brands — including Nectar and DreamCloud — run sales throughout the year and you rarely risk missing a better price by shopping these deals. In this guide, we've highlighted which sales are evergreen and which are new, wherever possible.
- Know your return policy: Buying a new mattress can be tricky, as everyone's sleep needs are unique. Most online mattress brands offer a sleep trial — time to test the bed at home — with returns for free (or a minimal fee) within this period. Some brands, particularly budget beds and third-party retailers, only offer returns if the mattress is in the original condition. In other words, still rolled up in its box.
- Don't skip the sleep trial: Okay, this is practically the same point as above but the sleep trial is our number one piece of advice when buying a mattress online. A standard trial lasts 100 nights but some brands offer up to a full year — well over the estimated 30 nights it takes to adjust to a bed. With a sleep trial, you can test the bed where it mattress most: in your own bedroom.
