When Claude first launched, it was easy to lump it in with ChatGPT and Gemini. And, some people unknowingly still do that. But over the past year, Anthropic has steadily expanded Claude from a conversational assistant into something closer to an AI workspace.

It can build working software, search the web, run multi-step research projects, produce polished documents, write and ship code from your terminal and connect to the apps you already use. Some of these features are available on the free plan. Most get significantly more powerful on a paid one.

Here are nine capabilities that show just how far Claude has moved beyond the chatbot label.

1. Build working apps and tools through conversation

Artifacts remain one of Claude's most distinctive features. Describe what you want, such as a graphing calculator, a quiz, a data dashboard or a game and Claude builds it in a live panel right next to the conversation. You're not receiving a block of code to copy somewhere else.

You get a functioning tool you can use immediately and refine through follow-up messages. This applies to visualizations too. Ask Claude to chart your data or map out a timeline, and it generates interactive artifacts you can explore, not static images.

I've used it to build a portfolio site, educational games for my kids, budget trackers for my family and productivity tools. The ability to preview the results in real-time is a game-changer.

2. Search the web in real time

Claude can search the web when a question requires up-to-date information. That means it can pull in breaking news, compare recently released products, verify announcements, or check current figures instead of relying solely on training data.

Because of this, I often use it for fact checking or citing sources. This sounds simple, but it changes the dynamic of the conversation. You don't have to wonder whether Claude's answer reflects the world as it exists today or the world as it existed when the model was trained. If something might have changed, Claude goes and checks.

3. Conduct deep, multi-step research

Beyond basic web search, Claude offers a dedicated Research mode on paid plans. Rather than returning a single set of search results, Claude works through your question over several minutes — running multiple searches that build on each other, exploring different angles, and synthesizing what it finds into a thorough answer with citations you can check.

This is particularly useful for competitive analysis, literature reviews, comparing vendors, or any question where a single Google search wouldn't cut it. The result read like a briefing from a research assistant, which is great for skimming quickly or saving for studying later.

4. Connect to your apps and services

Through integrations called Connectors, Claude can work with external platforms directly. Google Drive, Google Calendar, Slack, and a growing list of third-party services can be connected so that Claude pulls from your actual data rather than requiring you to copy and paste everything into the chat window.

This means you can ask Claude to find a document in your Drive, check your calendar for openings, or pull context from a connected tool, all within the same conversation.

The integration layer is still expanding, but it already covers the productivity tools most people rely on daily.

5. Read and work with enormous documents

Claude's context window, which is the amount of text it can hold in a single conversation, sits at one million tokens, which translates to roughly 750,000 words. That's enough to load an entire novel, a full codebase, or hundreds of pages of contracts and research papers without splitting anything up.

For researchers, legal professionals and anyone who works with long documents, this is one of Claude's most practical advantages. You can upload a 300-page report and ask specific questions across the entire thing rather than feeding it in piece by piece and hoping the model remembers what came before.

6. Write, debug, and ship code

This is perhaps what I use Claude for the most. It was already a pretty great coding assistant, but Claude Code changed the game. It's a command-line tool that works directly in your terminal, your IDE or the Claude desktop app. It reads your files, runs commands, edits code across multiple files and executes tests.

At Anthropic's Code with Claude event in May 2026, nearly half the developers in the room raised their hands when asked if they'd shipped a pull request written entirely by Claude in the past week. Whether or not that's how you want to work, it gives a sense of where things stand. Claude Code is included with Pro, Max plans and available through the API.

7. Create polished documents and files

Claude doesn't just generate text in a chat window, it can produce actual downloadable files like Word documents, slide decks, spreadsheets, PDFs and more. Ask for a formatted report, a pitch deck or a financial model, and Claude builds the file and hands it to you ready to open in the appropriate application.

This matters because the gap between "Claude helped me write something" and "Claude gave me a finished deliverable" is significant. Instead of copying chat output into a template and reformatting it yourself, you get a file that's already structured, styled and ready to send.

8. Remember you across conversations

Although it was the last of the chatbots to get a solid memory capability, Claude finally has a memory system that lets it retain context about you between separate conversations. It can remember your preferences, your projects, ongoing decisions and working style so you don't have to re-explain everything each time you start a new chat.

Separately, Projects lets you organize multiple related conversations around shared documents and instructions, which is useful for ongoing work like writing a book, managing a product launch or developing a business plan. Between memory, Skills and Projects, Claude can maintain continuity in a way that makes long-term collaboration practical rather than frustrating.

9. Work as a desktop assistant alongside your other tools

Claude now runs as a desktop application with a feature called Cowork that gives it access to files on your computer. Claude can read, edit, and create files autonomously, coordinate multi-step tasks, and work in the background while you do other things.

This pushes Claude beyond the "open a browser tab, type a question" model, which so many users more commonly do. Cowork is available on all paid plans and recently expanded to mobile, letting sessions and files follow you across devices.

Final thoughts

Claude is an absolute powerhouse for productivity. I am a huge fan, but haven't always felt this way. In fact, I used to avoid it because I actually thought it offered "more than I need."

But once I started using it beyond the chat box, I discovered just how useful it can be. If you're trying to figure out where to start first, try out any of these nine uses and go from there.

It's worth spending a few minutes exploring what else is there. Between Artifacts, Research mode, Claude Code, file creation, integrations and Cowork, the product has quickly become something much broader than the chatbot it started as.

I have to say, I've always found foldable flip phones more appealing than the book-shaped models like Galaxy Z Fold 8. They're shaped like a proper phone, but with the ability to fold into a more compact and convenient form for travel — like a Transformer, but without all the baggage of potentially running into a Decepticon on the highway.

Sadly, it seems Samsung may be giving up on flip phones, at least for the immediate future. We first heard reports of this back in May, with news that Samsung may have canceled the Galaxy Z Flip 9. Now, long-time Samsung leaker Ice Universe has corroborated those claims with a brief post on X.

The leaker doesn't elaborate on the post in any way, simply stating that the Z Flip 8 will likely be the last small foldable that Samsung makes. Which, honestly, isn't actually that surprising when you think about it.

Over the past few years, it seems as though the Z Flip series has been an afterthought for Samsung. The focus has been on the flagship Z Fold series, and the feeling I got was that there just wasn't enough interest left to produce a really solid Z Flip upgrade.

If you think about how the series has changed over the last few years, the biggest upgrade has been the cover display, but even that has reached the point where there isn't much else that can be done. Things like the cameras and battery have barely changed, while the price has slowly risen.

On top of that, Samsung also has to contend with the rising cost of actually making these things. RAM and storage prices are sky high right now, of course, but phone production itself has become more expensive over the past several years. We may have reached the stage where interest in the Z Flip series isn't enough to justify producing them. Though I do wonder if things would be different if the lineup hadn't suffered years of stagnation and minimal attention.

The fact that Ice Universe says that this will be the last "small folding product" says a lot too. It means Samsung won't be scrapping the Z Flip series in favor of something new. Instead, it'll likely go all in on the Z Fold series now that we have Ultra and Wide variants to choose between.

It's not ideal for those of you hoping to get a foldable Galaxy experience on a smaller budget, considering the astronomical Z Fold prices, but at least Motorola is still in the flip foldable game. For now, anyway.

The weekends were made for watching some great movies, and fortunately, Netflix isn’t letting subscribers down. The popular streaming service recently added a wave of excellent films to its library, and I’ve combed through the new additions to pick out a trio of gems.

If you need a good cry, then Netflix has the perfect option: an emotionally devastating period drama from Oscar-winning filmmaker Chloé Zhao. Meanwhile, if you want a proper popcorn blockbuster, Tom Holland’s first Spider-Man is now on Netflix, and Brad Pitt’s excellent baseball drama is streaming too. You don’t even need to be a sports fan to enjoy that one.

Forget spending time outdoors in the summer sun; draw the curtains, turn on your AC (or oversized fan), grab some snacks, and stream these must-watch new to Netflix movies over the weekend instead.

‘Hamnet’ (2025)

“Hamnet” completely floored me when I caught it in theaters. This Oscar-winning drama is one of the most emotionally powerful movies I’ve ever seen, and I will warn you now it’s a heavy watch (doubly so if you’re a parent). But it’s also a truly marvellous film, spearheaded by Jessie Buckley’s multiple-award-winning performance. It’s a sterling testament to the power of cinema with a spine-chilling finale that won’t leave a single dry eye in the house.

Based on Maggie O’Farrell’s novel of the same name, “Hamnet” tells the story of the eponymous character, the son of William Shakespeare (Paul Mescal) and his wife, Agnes (Buckley). When the bubonic plague spreads through London, Hamnet falls gravely ill, leaving Agnes devastated. This drama is a remarkable tale of grief and parental love. Just don’t blame me if the movie makes you ugly cry for several minutes; I did warn you!

‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ (2017)

Looking for something a little lighter? Then “Spider-Man: Homecoming” is a great pick. With the latest big-screen outing for the webhead just weeks away, why not go back to where it all started with Tom Holland’s first solo movie as Peter Parker. “Homecoming” arrived when the Marvel Cinematic Universe was in its heyday, and it offers up a refreshing smaller-scale story, with Spider-Man battling a street-level villain rather than saving the world.

Set immediately following Holland’s first appearance in the MCU in “Captain America: Civil War,” Peter Parker is eager to prove himself to mentor figure Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). Frustrated with merely being a friendly neighborhood crimefighter, he gets the chance to step into the big leagues when the villainous Vulture (Michael Keaton) arrives on the scene with a plan to sell alien technology to some very bad people.

‘Moneyball’ (2011)

The testament of a great sports movie is whether you can enjoy it even if you don’t know a thing about the sport in question, and “Moneyball” passes this test with flying colors. Sure, you’ll probably get even more from this biographical drama if you’re a baseball fan, but even if you’re not a follower, you should still give this 2011 movie a shot. It’s a compelling underdog story that explores a team that changed the game forever.

Based on true events and adapted from Michael Lewis’ book, Brad Pitt plays Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s in the early 2000s. Struggling to compete with baseball’s biggest clubs on the A’s more modest budget, Beane is introduced to a new way of thinking by economics graduate Peter Brand (Jonah Hill). Putting faith in data rather than a scout’s gut feeling, they create a team of undervalued talent and take on the system.

Earlier this week, we saw reports that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 could be subjected to a serious price hike in the European market — rising by as much as €280 for some high-storage models. Now U.S. pricing has leaked and, you guessed it, the prices are set to be higher than last year.

According to a new report from SE Daily, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 (formerly known as the Z fold Wide) will come with a price tag in excess of $2,000 — possibly as high as $2,099. In comparison, the Galaxy Z Fold 7 started at $1,999, while the Z Fold 6 was $1,899 and the Z Fold 5 started at $1,799.

The upgrade from Z Fold 4 to Z Fold 5 was the last time Samsung kept the Z Fold series price static, which makes this price hike the third time in a row Samsung has decided we need to pay more for our folding phones.

SE Daily appears to be referring to the flagship foldable, which the rumor mill has taken to calling the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. This is the successor to the Z Fold 7, and is expected to come with the same form factor and high-profile features like the 200MP camera.

What about the Z Fold 8 Wide and Z Flip 8?

The other book-style foldable on the way is what used to be called the Galaxy Z Fold Wide, but has now started being referred to as the Z Fold 8. This foldable is set to offer a shorter and wider design, similar in shape to a passport and a close approximation of what the foldable iPhone Ultra may look like.

SE Daily claims this phone will cost $1,899, which is $100 less than the price of a Z Fold 7. That slightly lower price tag will likely account for the fact that the Z Fold 8 doesn't have as much high-end hardware, and skips out on features like the telephoto camera lens and 200MP photo resolution.

There's no mention of how much the Galaxy Z Flip 8 might cost, but the EU leak suggests we may also see a €100 price hike on the flip-foldable too.

We don't currently have any official information to work with, so it shouldn't be surprising to anyone that Samsung could increase the price of the Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8. After all, the cost of making phones has gone up, especially if you're hoping to offer a good amount of memory and storage. So while I fully expect the price of the Z Fold 8 to go up, the question I have is how much the higher-storage variants might cost.

According to that EU leak, the 512GB Z Fold 8 Ultra will be €180 more than the equivalent Z Fold 7, while the 1TB model will be €280 more. That's a lot of extra money to be asked to spend, and it's not like Galaxy Foldables were ever cheap to begin with.

We'll find out for sure at Galaxy Unpacked on July 22, which has now been officially confirmed by Samsung. The event is set to take place in London, starting at 9a.m. ET / 6 a.m. PT / 2 p.m. BST, and in the meantime you can read all about the upcoming phones in our Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 8 hubs.

Nespresso always seems to be cooking up something exciting. So what's happening this summer 2026? Not only have we got the brand-new Nespresso Vertuo Up, one of the best Nespresso machines, we've also got...

Summer Nespresso flavors! I tried three of the new flavors — Yuzu & Vanilla Over Ice, Coconut Vanilla Over Ice, and Oatly Barista Edition. I didn't get a chance to try out the new decaf French Lavender & Vanilla, but this is a super fun flavor. Usually, decaf drinkers don't get as many options, so it's great to see Nespresso remember our non-caffeinated brethren.

So, which of the new Nespresso summer flavors is worth it? Does it actually taste like yuzu? Don't fear, because I'll answer all your questions and more. I made all of these drinks on the new Nespresso Vertuo Up.

Flavor 1: Yuzu & Vanilla Over Ice

First up is the one I'm most excited for: the Yuzu & Vanilla Over Ice. This pod makes 80ml, a "double espresso", and I served it both black and with milk. While milk brought out a creamy, almost cheesecake-like flavor, just water tasted light and clean.

The first photo is black, the second is with oat milk.

The flavor: The yuzu flavor is really subtle. If you're worried about it being a wall of citrus, don't be. The coffee, vanilla, and yuzu notes are complementary, rather than battling one another for dominance. It tastes more like a coffee with a whisper of lemon than anything else.

If you like juicy, fruity drinks, like African coffee beans or Starbucks Pink Drink, you'll probably like this a lot.

Flavor 2: Coconut & Vanilla Over Ice

Next is Coconut & Vanilla Over Ice. This pod is a little different as it makes a 230ml "coffee" rather than an 80ml "double espresso". You don't need to add anything except ice.

The flavor: Just like the Nespresso Yuzu & Vanilla Over Ice, Coconut & Vanilla is subtle and delicate. You might not even know it's supposed to be vanilla flavored without reading the packet. I like the caramelly mouthfeel — the drink is smooth and warming even though it's completely iced — and the coconut does well to round out the coffee.

I'd say this tastes more like an iced batch brew with a little brown sugar than a coconut milk coffee. I was worried it would be too coconutty, but it's not. This coffee is better for people who want a subtle toasty flavor rather than a coconut milk latte. I really enjoyed it, but I think I would prefer a bolder coconut taste.

Flavor 3: Oatly Barista Edition

As an oat milk fanatic, I was surprised and pleased to see an Oatly Barista Edition Nespresso pod. Those who know me will know I go through a carton of the stuff every few days.

This pod brews an 80ml "double shot" and is designed to be made iced.

Here are two photos of the Oatly Barista Edition over ice. The first photo uses oat milk and the second was made with dairy milk.

The flavor: This was my favorite of the three by far. This pod has a strong, malty coffee flavor. The beans are rich and caramelly with zero bitterness. There's no whisper of yuzu or coconut. It tastes like coffee — in the best way possible.

This would be the best pod if you like flat whites or cortados.

Alright, after much deliberation, I've finally settled on my Nespresso pod ranking.

Landing a good TV deal is all about timing. When we tested and reviewed LG's newest mid-range OLED TV back in April, our takeaway was simple: The LG C6 is an exceptional TV whose sticker price is a bit too high. My colleague Dylan Haas — who wrote the review — recommended that folks wait "until the back half of the year when the C6 inevitably drops its price."

Fast-forward to today. If you took Dylan’s advice and held off on buying the C6 at full price, your patience has now been rewarded.

The 65-inch LG C6 just crashed to $1,999 on Amazon. It's a steep, 26% discount on one of the year's best TVs, and for the first time since its release, I can recommend it with full, unbridled enthusiasm.

You can check out Dylan's LG C6 review for a full report on this mid-range OLED (including test results), but here's the basic gist: The C6 is only a marginal upgrade over the C5, but to be fair, the C5 was a five-star stunner of a TV.

Until now, I've been directing people to the C5 on account of its cheaper price tag. And, while the C5 is still sporting a friendlier price tag over a year after its debut, the C6's latest discount is deep enough to bring it back into the conversation.

If you've never gazed upon an OLED TV before, you're in for a treat. The C6 doesn't rely on a traditional backlight, and instead, each one of its millions of pixels is self-illuminating.

This means that the C6 can render perfect black levels. Bright objects aren't saddled with the distracting, hazy-looking light bloom you're bound to see even on high-end Mini-LED TVs that cost roughly the same as the C6.

The C6 also leads the mid-range OLED class when it comes to features. All four of its HDMI 2.1 inputs support 4K gaming at 120Hz (the highest 4K spec for today's consoles), and 4K/165Hz is an option for PC gamers. Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and AMD FreeSync Premium are along for the ride, too.

LG's in-house streaming platform isn't my favorite (that honor goes to Roku), but the C6's built-in webOS functionality is reliable enough for everyday use.

Unlike Samsung's mid-range OLED TV for 2026 (the S90H), the C6 comes with Dolby Vision support. This is one of the most popular HDR formats, and its inclusion ensures that the C6 is able to accurately match a filmmaker's vision during Dolby Vision-mastered content.

Unfortunately, this is the portion of the post where I must remind you that the prices of new TVs fluctuate quite often. According to my records, the LG C6 was listed on Amazon for $2,699 as recently as the middle of June. If you're interested in saving on this set, I don't recommend waiting.

There's a saying that comedy is tragedy plus time. Unfortunately, not enough time has passed since I saw the tragic "Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass" for it to be a comedy I want to see again.

Granted, this was never going to be the biggest summer movie of the year. While the cast of the latest film from "Wet Hot American Summer" writer/director David Wain is certainly talented enough — you can sell me on Zoey Deutch, Jon Hamm and John Slattery any day — this always had a whiff of being an indie darling and nothing more. But I at least expected it to be funny, especially after watching the trailer.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, I'm in the minority when it comes to disliking this movie and its jokes within. It currently holds an 80% fresh rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. But I'm notably not the only critic to find it a miss, and nearly all of us blame it on the comedy in this comedic film simply not landing its punchlines.

‘Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass’ is a great premise poorly executed

The "hall pass" is not a new trope in romance. It's been done in plenty of shows and movies; my favorite example is Ross in "Friends" being shut down by Isabella Rossellini after she discovers she was taken off his list of celebrities he can be with for a fleeting tryst without reprisal from his partner.

And that's the initial thrust of "Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass," a title that is very much literal. Gail (Deutch) discusses the idea of being able to hook up with one celebrity, no strings attached, with her fiancé, Tom (Michael Cassidy). He finds it silly, but says that his choice will be Jennifer Aniston.

Spoiler alert: He meets Jennifer Aniston, and they hook up. So now, Gail goes to Hollywood to meet Jon Hamm (her "celebrity pass") and sleep with him, so she can even the score and finally marry Tom.

Now, that's not a bad premise. In fact, it's a pretty good one. It's then quickly muddled by Gail and a motley crew of misfits accidentally picking up a briefcase that belongs to a dangerous criminal (Sabrina Impacciatore), turning their quest to find Hamm into a fight for survival.

But that's not the most egregious misstep by this comedy. Nor is that it essentially is a twist on the "Wizard of Oz" by the time the movie's plot concludes. The worst thing about this comedy is the comedy.

Some bits work. There's a helpful hotel concierge who shows Gail and her friend, Otto (Miles Guiterrez-Riley), where to get a coffee, a bite to eat and the best oral sex you can get behind a Foot Locker. There's also a scene where they (and a few others) accidentally intrude on the musician Weird Al Yankovic, who proceeds to chase them off with an assault rifle.

But the movie mostly just assaults you with a spray of comedic bits, most of which either miss the mark or misfire entirely. A recurring joke about CAA may be funny to the actors in "Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass," several of whom might even be represented by the Hollywood agency, but it probably isn't to most anyone else. Narration can be funny when used sparingly, but it can get old fast, as it does in this movie. And ultimately, at the end of this film, which is just 94 minutes long, you're left wondering what the point of this movie was, let alone what the point was in you watching it.

Verdict: I didn't like this movie, but you might

I know I just spent paragraphs bashing it, but to be clear: I wanted to like this movie. If I think a movie is going to be bad, I try to avoid it unless it's a professional obligation. This movie had a funny premise, a great cast and a good trailer.

I also like David Wain's previous films, "Wet Hot American Summer" and "Role Models," as well as his iconic comedy shows "The State" and "Stella." I also like Ken Marino, who co-wrote and stars in "Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass." In short, everything was set up for me to like this movie.

But there's no denying I did not enjoy this movie. In fact, it's one of the worst movies I've seen all year.

That's just my take and my taste, though, and yours may differ. I'd say that, if the trailer doesn't speak to you at all, there's no chance you'll like this movie. But if, like me, you liked the trailer, wait for this movie to arrive on Netflix. As a Sony Pictures Classics film, it will eventually make it to the streaming service, where you can watch it as part of your subscription. That way, if you don't like the movie, you can stop watching rather than being stuck in a theater.

Theoretically, animated and live-action movies have different advantages, and can do different things more effectively and with greater artistry. If anyone at Disney understood that basic concept, I might be more inclined to give their live-action remakes of animated hits the benefit of the doubt. But as the new version of “Moana” proves yet again, the formula for these movies has been refined into slavish imitation, with only minimal variations on the source material.

“Moana” isn’t the worst of Disney’s many live-action remakes, but it’s one of the most pointless, and anyone who enjoyed the 2016 original would be better off just watching that again. Disney could save a lot of money by simply rereleasing that beloved film into theaters.

Anyone who hasn’t seen 2016’s “Moana” would also be well-advised to start there, since it’s not like the decade-old movie is in any way outdated. It’s obviously relevant enough to warrant a nearly carbon-copy remake, with multiple stars reprising their previous roles. The story remains solid, and the songs are still excellent, but the new movie is little more than an inferior re-enactment.

The new ‘Moana’ tells the same story, only worse

Nothing has changed about the plot of “Moana,” which is still set on the fictional Polynesian island of Motunui, where the inhabitants have lived in peace and isolation for centuries. Young Moana (Catherine Laga’aia) is the spirited daughter of the island’s chief, Tui (John Tui), and is expected to succeed him as leader one day. The one ironclad rule of Motunui is that no one ever ventures further offshore than the nearby reef, but Moana longs to explore the vastness of the ocean.

When the island’s coconut crops and fishing expeditions start to fail, both Moana and her grandmother Tala (Rena Owen) believe that the only way to save Motunui is to break an ancient curse brought on by the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) when he stole the heart of the goddess Te Fiti. So Moana leaves Motonui with just her hyperactive pet chicken Heihei as her companion, to seek out Maui and convince him to return the heart of Te Fiti and bring prosperity back to Motunui.

As scripted by original “Moana” writer Jared Bush and “Moana 2” co-writer/co-director Dana Ledoux Miller, the new “Moana” follows all the expected beats, with only very minor additions. Yet the story that’s full of wonder and excitement in animated form feels largely lifeless when transposed to live action, augmented by more detailed but less appealing digital effects.

‘Moana’ falls flat when it should soar

The one major player who’s entirely blameless here is Laga’aia, who confidently steps into the role previously played by Auli’i Cravalho with all the charm she can muster. The live-action format means that she’s frequently alone onscreen, surrounded only by visual effects added in later, but she’s still compelling to watch, with a lovely singing voice and boundless energy.

It’s too bad that the movie around her doesn’t match her enthusiasm, especially Johnson’s desperate-seeming performance as Maui, returning after voicing the character in both animated movies. To help him more closely resemble the muscular but rotund Maui, he’s been saddled with bulky prosthetics that make him look more swollen than swole, like he’s experiencing an unfortunate allergic reaction. Add in a limp, awkwardly fitting wig, and he seems out of place the entire time as the cocky, carefree Maui.

The existing songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foa’i and Mark Mancina are just as good as they’ve always been — Moana’s “I want” song “How Far I’ll Go” remains one of the best Disney musical numbers of the past 25 years — and it’s always enjoyable to hear them again. But the staging is uninspired, which is especially disappointing given that “Moana” marks the feature-film debut of veteran Broadway director Thomas Kail, whose credits include the debut runs of “Hamilton” and “In the Heights.”

The value of hiring an experienced theater director should be in his ability to bring vibrant production numbers to life, but aside from the early performance of “Where You Are,” which features an ensemble of exuberantly dancing townspeople, the songs proceed in a vacuum of digital clutter. Ironically, Maui’s big number, “You’re Welcome,” is greatly enhanced by extensive animation, making it even more redundant.

Verdict: ‘Moana’ is a tedious retread

Jemaine Clement also returns to voice the greedy giant crab Tamatoa, and like Heihei, he looks essentially the same as his 2016 counterpart, only with drabber, more “realistic” animation that takes away much of his appeal. That applies to the movie as a whole, which looks busier but less colorful than the original, and comes off like cheap cosplay despite costing hundreds of millions of dollars to produce.

“Moana 2” wasn’t great, but at least it attempted to offer a new story, new songs and new supporting characters. All that the live-action “Moana” has to offer is a reminder of a much better movie that is readily accessible right now on Disney Plus.

I count myself among the millions of Millennials out there who grew up knowing the ins and outs of every piece of technology they came across.

Learning how to code by changing one’s MySpace page, figuring out how to download albums off of LimeWire, burning Dreamcast games to any disc in proximity and cooking up a beat on FL Studio for our friend’s (failed) foray into rapping stand out as some of my generation’s standout tech memories. As for Generation X, I know a few members of that age group who always called upon me and the other Millennials in their family to help them navigate all the confusing technology they had (and still have!) trouble learning.

It’s hard enough explaining to people in their 50s and over how to copy and paste, open multiple tabs on a browser or use a streaming service. It’s even tougher to explain to them how to get the best (and safest) use out of AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, etc.

After close observation of my parents’ and older family members' constant struggles with AI, I took note of them all and did my best to look up the most efficient fixes for each one.

Treating AI like a search engine is old hat

I’ll never forget showing ChatGPT to my mom for the first time and seeing her treat it like Google by asking it a myriad of basic questions, like “What’s the best exercise for someone in their 60’s?” I informed her that she should treat that chatbot more like a collaborator and less like your everyday search engine. For that fitness-based inquiry she brought to ChatGPT, I told her to reframe it as “Interview me and build a workout plan around my bad back, work schedule, and fitness goals.”

AI users over 50 should realize that giving AI tools as much context as possible when coming up with a prompt (which is defined as the message you type into a chat box for a chatbot to get a response). Making an AI tool aware of your decades of experience across several areas of your personal and professional life will help it give you more detailed answers catered to you instead of generic ones.

Instead of going with “How do I become more productive?”, you’ll get better results by telling a chatbot, “I’m 57, manage a team of 10 people, have ADHD tendencies, travel twice a month, and want to reclaim five hours per week. Build a productivity system for me.”

Another error I see folks in their 50s and older make with AI is only using it for information and not for decision-making purposes. It comes in handy when trying to compare options before making a purchase, stress-testing plans for an event, creating roadmaps before a road trip, simulating outcomes before making a major life decision, etc. And in those cases, being as informative as possible with your prompt while leaving out your most vital details (names, financial information, emails, personal address, etc.) is key.

Other problems and more fixes

Alongside making sure the 50-and-over crowd treats AI like a digital assistant instead of a universal web search tool, here are five other mistakes I’ve observed while watching older folks try their hand at utilizing chatbots:

• Trusting everything AI says at face value: The same generation that told millennials not to believe everything they read on the Internet sure has a bad habit of believing everything a chatbot tells them about their health, legal, or financial matters. Never use AI as your sole source of information—use it among a group of comparable citations from reliable outlets to get the trustworthy answers you seek.
• Trusting everything AI shows at face value: I’m tired of opening my Facebook Messenger and being treated to an obvious AI-generated photo/video and having my older family member write something that exposes how they think it’s real. The obvious telltale signs of AI visual content are an extra glossy presentation, unnatural facial features, characters with extra fingers, shadows pointing in the wrong direction and scrambled/misspelled text.
• Giving up after just one prompt: Patience is a virtue. And sadly, I’ve started to notice how the older folks I know are quick to give up after just one prompt/response session when they expect a perfect answer on the first try and don’t get it. They call AI tools “chatbots” for a reason—they’re here to have lengthy, meaningful conversations. Useful follow-up responses, such as “Make this sound friendlier and shorter” and “Give me the skeptical view”, help AI tools expound on the task at hand and produce improved results as a chat moves forward.
• Avoiding AI because they feel it’s not for them: I’ve gotten used to hearing older folks refrain from using AI because they think it’s strictly for “tech people.” I’ve had to explain to them how it works for folks in their age bracket since it can be used to discover recipes, build vacation itineraries, get directions, answer health-related questions, etc., which are the sort of things they regularly look for.
• Avoiding AI because of privacy and scam concerns: I totally understand older people avoiding AI due to their concerns about AI using their data and possibly having it exposed to scammers. Alongside deleting old chats, not letting chatbots access your location/personal photos and never entering your most crucial info, having secure chats with AI also means making your chats private or turning off their memory. Simply looking up “how to make my [chatbot name] chats private” will help you in this regard.

Final thoughts

Here’s an approach I always continually utter whenever my parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts approach me with a question on how to properly interact with AI:

“Don’t just ask it for answers. Ask it to broaden your way of thinking and help you in every way possible, but always rely on your own instincts and reliable info to make final decisions.” Chatbots are here to assist us with simple & complicated requests and generate visual content, but it’s always good to be mindful of their penchant for producing false information (aka “hallucinations”) and the visual cues that expose AI-generated videos/art.

Be aware of the common AI usage errors I pointed out and you’ll quickly transform into a chatbot power user who can show the youngsters a thing or two about how to properly use it.

With temperatures soaring, we’re not the only ones who are feeling parched — our plants are also bearing the brunt of extreme temperatures. Beyond simply adjusting your seasonal lawn care routine, it is vital to adopt strategies that ensure your plants can withstand the heatwave.

Whether you have favorite houseplants, raised beds, or tasty tomato plants, you’ll need to know how to protect them in scorching temperatures. If not, your plants will struggle in the sun and eventually die. Luckily, we’ve got a gardening expert at hand to offer a few top tips that can help your plants thrive and survive the summer.

1. Water at the right time of day

While it might be tempting to water your plants more when the weather is scorching, timing is actually everything.

Experts advise watering your garden either in the early morning or the evening once temperatures are cooler. By watering during these cooler hours, your plants can soak up the water rather than just evaporating.

“When it comes to watering, it’s important to water deeply at the coolest points of the day,” states Chris Bonnett, founder of GardeningExpress.

“If it’s too hot, the water will just evaporate, and your plants won’t benefit.”

In addition, you should aim to give the roots a deep watering, as this will be much more effective than light and frequent watering.

And if you want to retain moisture for extended periods, add a layer of mulch around the base of your plants. “Adding a generous layer of mulch at the base of your plants will help improve the soil structure and will allow the soil to retain water for longer.”

So not only does it help to retain moisture in the soil, but acts as an insulator against the sun's UV rays.

2. Throw some shade

Another top tip is to move potted plants out of the sun and into shaded areas during the hottest part of the day. Just like us, this will provide our plants with some light relief and keep them cool.

“For plants that can’t be moved, or heavy pots, cover them with a shade cloth or make your own temporary one out of an old fitted bed sheet,” adds Bonnett.

Young or newly established plants will especially struggle in scorching temperatures — protect them by creating temporary cover with a shade cloth.

3. Stay away from fertilizers

A common mistake we often make is to add fertilizers to our wilting plants, but experts advise to steer clear of using in a heatwave.

“Stay away from fertilizing the lawn or plants during a heatwave,” agrees Bonnett. “Not only can they burn plants but fertilizers encourage new growth which can stress plants and cause them more harm than good.

Similarly, avoid pruning while the sun is at its peak. Cutting back growth now can place additional, unwanted pressure on your greenery — it is far better to hold off until the mercury begins to fall.

‘The Girlfriend’

“House of the Dragon” star Olivia Cooke finds herself in another fierce rivalry, but this time her character isn’t fighting over the Iron Throne, but rather the attention (and affections) of Laurie Davidson’s Daniel.

This psychological thriller limited series (which is getting a spin-off, aptly named “The Boyfriend”), sees Cooke at war with Robin Wright, a woman you don’t want to cross. This Prime Video show, which packs in plenty of juicy drama and exciting twists, is so addictive that you’ll probably tear through it in just a single afternoon.

Laura (Wright) is a well-presented member of high society and the doting mother to Daniel (Davidson). But when her son brings home his new girlfriend, Cherry (Cooke), Laura is convinced that her beloved child’s new partner is a manipulative social climber, and becomes determined to drive a wedge between the couple. But is Cherry truly a cunning gold digger in disguise, or is Laura just paranoid and overly protective of her son?

‘The Night Manager’

If you want a Prime Video series you can really sink your teeth into this weekend, check out “The Night Manager.” There are two six-episode seasons to binge, and even if you don’t have time to watch both right now, trust me, you’ll tear through the first season in no time at all.

Starring Tom Hiddleston, this spy drama does an excellent job of keeping you on the edge of your seat, as you attempt to figure out who is playing who. And if Hiddleston isn’t enough star power to catch your attention, the show also features Hugh Laurie, Oscar-winning Olivia Colam and Tom Hollander (No, not Spider-Man, that’s Tom Holland).

In season 1, hotel night manager and former military officer Jonathan Pine (Hiddleston) is recruited by the British Foreign Office to investigate Richard Roper (Laurie), an international businessman believed to be involved in the illegal arms trade. As Pine infiltrates Roper’s inner circle, the stakes are raised, and his true identity is in danger of being exposed.

‘The Better Sister’

Based on the novel by Alafair Burke, “The Better Sister” is an eight-episode limited series that premiered on Prime Video last spring to praise from both critics and viewers. It’s definitely a series that gets its hooks in fast.

The lead pairing of Elizabeth Banks and Jessica Biel is one of the major draws, but what will keep you invested until the final episode is the show’s willingness to swim in morally grey waters. There are also plenty of mysteries spun up across its run, though some critics did argue that it takes a little too long to get around to actually delivering satisfying answers.

Chloe (Biel) is a successful magazine editor living a perfect life with her husband, Adam (Corey Stoll), and teenage son, Ethan (Maxwell Acee Donovan). All seems well until Adam is murdered, and Chloe’s estranged sister, Nicky (Banks), arrives on the scene. If a murder mystery wasn’t enough drama, Adam was previously married to Nicky, adding a big scoop of family resentment to the thrilling mixture.

It's summertime, which means it's time for Samsung's new foldable phones. The company has confirmed July 22 for the next Galaxy Unpacked event in London, where we are expected to see the new generation of foldables, including the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series.

I'm not sure about you, but for the first time in years, I haven't been all that excited about the new Galaxy Z Fold(s). Samsung already addressed most of our long-standing complaints with the Galaxy Z Fold 7 last year, bringing in a wider cover display and a thinner design.

Add RAMageddon to the mix, and we can expect these new foldables to be priced sky-high and well out of our reach (unless you act fast, reserve your unit now and save up to $1,230 on your Galaxy Z Fold 8 pre-order).

That said, a few interesting Galaxy Z Fold 8 leaks over the past few weeks have pulled my attention back toward Samsung's foldables. I spent the last couple of months ignoring most of the Z Fold 8 rumors, but these are the ones that finally got my attention.

Samsung is breaking its one-book-style foldable-a-year pattern

Every time Samsung launches its Galaxy S series, it gives us a couple of options to choose from. There's the base model for people who don't want to spend too much and prefer a more compact form factor, and then there's the Galaxy S26 Ultra for those who want the best of everything, with a large screen and an S Pen.

With the Galaxy Z Fold series, things have been a little different because Samsung has only ever launched a single book-style foldable each year and called it a day. That's changing in 2026, though, as Samsung is finally rumored to debut not one but two book-style foldables this year.

Alongside the standard Galaxy Z Fold 7 successor, Samsung is said to be launching a new foldable aimed squarely at the iPhone Ultra launching later this year. This second device will reportedly have a different form factor, closer to a passport-style shape, with a less-tall but wider display.

That means when it unfolds, it'll feel more like a standard tablet rather than the squarer display the current Galaxy Z Fold series offers. You'll still be able to opt for the classic book-style foldable we've seen for years, but you'll now also have the option of this new form factor entering the market.

This is where things get interesting, because Samsung is apparently changing its naming scheme too. The standard Galaxy Z Fold form factor we've known all these years will reportedly now be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra, while the new passport-style form factor will take on the standard Galaxy Z Fold 8 name.

I know this is going to cause a fair bit of confusion among interested buyers, but it's apparently the direction Samsung is heading in.

The upgrade every foldable fan has wanted is coming

If you've been following the Galaxy Z Fold 8 leaks this time around, you'll have noticed that not much is changing. You'll get a similar screen size both on the cover and unfolded, an upgraded chipset that's standard at this point, and a triple-camera setup.

But one thing that leaked only recently, and might turn out to be the biggest upgrade of all, is an improved crease.

A leaker recently revealed that Samsung has made a significant improvement to the Galaxy Z Fold 8's hinge, resulting in far better crease control. They went on to suggest it could be comparable to the Oppo Find N6 that launched earlier this year.

For those who don't remember, the Oppo Find N6 launched with a virtually crease-free display. Having used it myself, I can tell you this could be the most underrated yet most impactful upgrade on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 this year.

One thing I've noticed with almost everyone who picks up a Galaxy Z Fold is how quickly they comment on the depth of the crease. If that's finally going away, it might end up drawing in more customers than any other upgrade on the phone.

Samsung might finally fix Z Fold's weakest point: the battery

The one leak that's really got me interested in the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series is the battery capacity. For years, we've complained that the Galaxy Z Fold has fallen behind its Chinese competitors when it comes to battery life.

We've seen foldables like the Oppo Find N6 and the Honor Magic V6 pack more than 6,000mAh, while Samsung has stuck with sub-4,400mAh batteries on the Galaxy Z Fold for years.

That finally seems to be changing this year. The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 7 are rumored to come with 5,000mAh and 4,800mAh batteries, respectively, which would bring the foldables much closer to the competition.

It might still not go toe-to-toe with the biggest batteries out there, but paired with the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5's efficiency, I'm more than hopeful Samsung will finally deliver better battery life than before.

Homeowners are being warned not to overload extension cords in yards and garages during the heatwave, as summer gadgets, tools and outdoor setups put extra pressure on electrical sockets.

As we spend more time in our yards, caring for our lawns, running outdoor lights, and using pool pumps, it can be all too easy to rely on extension cords to supply the extra power our devices need.

But the biggest error, according to Justin Nielsen, energy consultant at Wolf River Electric, is thinking an extension cord gives a household unlimited power.

The dangers of using an extension cord

Nielsen explains that an extension cord doesn't provide extra capacity; he says, “It only moves access to power from one place to another. If you plug too many devices into one extension cord or start daisy-chaining cords together, you are increasing the risk of overheating, tripping, equipment damage or overloading the circuit.”

It’s a view shared by Giuseppe Capanna, product safety engineer at Electrical Safety First, who says, “Whilst extension cords can be useful, they need to be used correctly to avoid creating a serious safety risk.”

Don’t make these electrical mistakes in your yard

The biggest mistake homeowners make, according to Capanna, is overloading. He says, “An extension lead does not provide extra power, so plugging in too many appliances, especially high-powered garden tools, can cause cables and sockets to overheat and increase the risk of fire.”

It can become a particular problem in summer, when a single extension cord powers multiple high-demand items. Nielsen adds that one of the danger areas is in yards and garages where people often have temporary power setups.

This can happen when someone plugs outdoor lights, speakers, a projector, a mini fridge, a pressure washer or several chargers into the same lead without checking the load.

Nielsen explains, “Gardens and garages are where people tend to improvise. They run one extension lead out of the kitchen, add a multi-socket adaptor, then plug in whatever they need for the day.”

While he says it might be fine for a few low-power items, it becomes a problem when people add higher-demand equipment or leave it running for hours.

Don’t ‘daisy-chain’ extension cords

Have you ever plugged one extension into another to reach to the end of your yard? It’s a common issue described as ‘daisy-chaining’, which Nielsen says is often used in backyards when people are trying to reach patios, sheds, garages or outdoor seating areas.

And he urges that if the cable is not long enough, don’t plug another one into it. “Daisy-chaining makes it harder to track the total load and creates more points where heat or damage can occur,” he says. “The safer option is to use one properly rated extension cord that is long enough for the job, or have outdoor power installed correctly by a qualified electrician if you need it regularly.”

If you are constantly relying on extension cords to provide the extra power you need in your yard or garage, Nielsen says it’s a clear sign you need something more than a temporary setup.

Stop using indoor cords outside

Another common summer mistake is using indoor extension cords in your yard, with Nielson warning that even if the weather is dry, outdoor conditions are different.

“Outdoors, you have moisture, grass, soil, foot traffic, pets, children, sunlight and sudden changes in weather. Even during a heatwave, gardens are not completely dry or controlled spaces. Morning dew, paddling pools, sprinklers and drinks being knocked over can all create problems,” he explains.

Apart from advising homeowners to use only extension cords designed for outdoor use, he also urges you to keep plugs, sockets and connections off the ground and away from water.

“If there is any chance the lead or socket could get wet, do not use it. Outdoor electrics need proper protection, not guesswork,” he adds.

Check for RCD protection

For your safety, Capanna says that any socket outlet being used to power outdoor equipment should be protected by a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI), also known as a residual current device (RCD). “It can help protect from electric shock if a fault occurs or a cable is accidentally damaged,” he says.

And he adds, "An RCD may already be fitted in your fuse box, but if your system is older and does not have one, a portable RCD can provide additional protection.”

Don’t forget your garage setup

Nielson extends his warning to garages that often contain freezers, battery chargers, power tools, e-bike chargers, and gym equipment, all fighting for limited sockets.

“Garages are easy to overlook because people treat them like storage spaces, not electrical spaces,” says Nielson, “But a garage can get very warm in summer, especially if it has poor ventilation or a dark roof. If you then have chargers, tools and appliances all plugged into one lead, you are creating a setup that needs checking.”

He adds that high-power items — anything that heats, cools, pumps water, charges a large battery or runs a motor — can draw more power than people expect and should never be plugged into an extension cord.

Uncoil cable reels

Another summer hazard is failing to uncoil cable reels when using an extension cord. Capanna says, “Cables left in direct sunlight or wound up on a reel can overheat, so always fully unwind cable reels before use and ensure they are suitable for the equipment you’re using.”

Nielsen adds, “People often leave half the cable wrapped around the reel because they only need a short length, but that is exactly the kind of shortcut that can cause overheating.”

Aside from always uncoiling the cable properly, he advises being careful about where you place it to ensure it doesn’t create a trip hazard.

Always think 'safety first'

Before using an extension cord in your yard or garage, Nielsen advises checking the cord’s maximum rating, the condition of the cable, and whether it’s designed for outdoor use.

Other signs to look for are cracked plugs, exposed wires, scorch marks, buzzing sounds, loose sockets or any lead that feels unusually hot.

He says, “If an extension [cord] feels hot to the touch, stop using it. Warm plugs, burning smells, flickering power or equipment cutting out are all warning signs.”

Rather than finishing what you are doing, he advises to switch it off immediately and check what is causing the issue.

Usually, I love it when phones get thinner and lighter, but that may not be the case with the iPhone 18 Pro Max if rumors are true about it getting thicker and heavier. Ice Universe reports that the upcoming flagship model will measure around 9mm thick and weigh approximately 7 grams more than the current iPhone 17 Pro Max (that's a 0.25mm increase in thickness).

Apparently, the added heft can be largely attributed to the larger batteries that the company is planning to use. Regulatory filings show a 5,567 mAh battery bound for the U.S. and a 5,391 mAh battery for China—representing a massive 500 mAh increase in capacity. Given that jump, it makes complete sense why the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s weight is ballooning.

I totally understand this move, as battery life continues to be a top priority for any smartphone user, but it does expose a dilemma that Apple continually faces in its attempt to balance design and endurance. There’s good and bad to this latest iPhone 18 Pro Max rumor, so let me break down the pros and cons.

iPhone 18 Pro Max: Rumored size comparison

Longer battery life

I’ve tested the last few iPhone generations and, for the most part, each subsequent model offers improved battery life. While the rumors hint that the iPhone 18 Pro Max will get a significant capacity boost, that extra juice consequently means a thicker and heavier design.

More capacity will simply allow the upcoming flagship to last much longer on a single charge. Based on the rumors, the battery will be 9.87% larger than the one in the iPhone 17 Pro Max — though it’s difficult to say if that will translate to an identical percentage jump in real-world endurance. Of course, a lot of it also boils down to the power efficiency of the upcoming A20 Pro chip.

Despite that, I fully expect the iPhone 18 Pro Max to eclipse the 18-hour and 42-minute average that the iPhone 17 Pro Max achieved in our battery drain test. However, it'll still take a lot more than a 10% battery bump to dethrone the true endurance warriors on our best phone battery life list — like the OnePlus 15, which reached a mind-boggling time of 25 hours and 13 minutes.

Materials do matter

Just the other day, while I was lying on my back and holding my iPhone 17 Pro, I lost my grip. In slow-motion fashion, I reacted quickly enough to move my face out of the way and prevent a head-on collision. What I momentarily forgot — and abruptly rediscovered at that second — was just how dense this thing is. I think many of us don’t regularly consider the amount of force these glass-and-metal slabs can apply on impact.

That’s why I would usually prioritize a smaller, lighter design, knowing full well it comes at the expense of battery life. Rumors suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max will feature a new vapor chamber design made of stainless steel, which is another potential contributing factor to its increased size and weight.

The iPhone 14 Pro Max currently stands as the heaviest iPhone ever, but the 18 Pro Max is tipped to match or even beat its 240-gram weight. It's a fascinating cycle to look back on. Apple famously ditched the heavy stainless steel of the 14 Pro Max in favor of a lighter titanium frame on the 15 Pro Max, bringing the weight down significantly. While Apple moved to a less-dense aluminum alloy for the 17 Pro Max, internal design changes and a physically larger footprint pushed the weight back up anyway.

My point here is that materials matter. While the internal vapor chamber is rumored to be constructed out of heavier stainless steel, I’m hoping Apple sticks to lightweight aluminum for the rest of the chassis.

I also think it’s worth pointing out Apple's ongoing reluctance to adopt silicon-carbon batteries. This newer battery tech can stow more charge without increasing a battery’s overall physical footprint, keeping devices incredibly slim while delivering stellar endurance. It's already proving to be a game-changer for competitors, and it's a shame Apple hasn't made the leap.

Performance gains

Finally, I think it’s worth calling out the new vapor chamber design. Power users know the benefits of having one, mainly because of how it boosts sustained performance. I’m confident that the upcoming A20 Pro chip — which is expected to move to an ultra-efficient 2nm manufacturing process — will inherently improve upon the current A19 Pro, but a robust cooling system ensures it can actually maintain that peak performance for much longer.

Heat kills a processor’s performance, and along with it, battery health. Even though the iPhone 18 Pro Max may get thicker and heavier partly due to this new vapor chamber design, I think the compromise will be well worth it in the long run. Processor-intensive tasks — like playing graphically taxing games or editing 4K video footage on the fly — will be handled much better without the phone aggressively throttling.

Regardless, I’m not entirely surprised by the revelation that the 18 Pro Max could be a heavyweight. What I’m really curious about now is the price. So far, iPhones have largely been spared from major price hikes, but we could very well see a change when this flagship drops later this fall.

We know that jumping into a workout isn't recommended; as a trainer, ideally, you'd always warm up first with me. But whether or not you swerve your warm-ups in your own time, preparing your core and spine is very important, and these five "grounding" exercises are perfect for helping you do that.

If you try these before workouts, you'll feel more connected to your body, including your core and diaphragm, and the ground beneath you. This is particularly crucial for exercises that require foot-ground connection, like squats and deadlifts, plus moves like push-ups or planks, where your hands or elbows are also planted.

Below, I show you exactly how to do them, plus share some of the benefits. One of the best yoga mats is useful to have, but any exercise mat will work.

If you experience pain at any time, stop and rest. If you're working with an injury or health condition, or you're currently pregnant or postnatal, I recommend seeking advice before starting these exercises.

Try to work slowly through these and focus on exactly what your breath and body are doing. As you breathe, slow it down to three to four counts in and out, breathing down into your stomach while lightly bracing your core. Imagine inflating and deflating a balloon; placing your hands on your stomach can be useful for connecting with the breath. Some beginner breathing exercises may help you get started.

Additionally, with your feet on the ground, press through your heels and big and little toes. This is called a tripod position, and combined with toe splay, will help you feel connected to the ground. Combined with some breathing exercises, spine work, and core engagement, your whole body should feel ready to move safely.

The routine:

• Pelvic tilt 2 sets x 8-10 reps: Lie on the mat with your knees bent and feet pressed down, hip-width apart. Place your hands lightly on your hips. Keep your chin tucked so that your spine is neutral. Slowly tilt your pelvis toward you and draw your navel in; notice how this flattens your lower back to the mat. Reverse the motion back to neutral.
• Toe splay 60-90 seconds: Stand with your feet hip-width apart. Press down through your big and little toes and heels. Begin rolling your feet from the outer edges to the inner edges, and from heels to toes. Roll through your toes individually from big to little, pressing down into the mat and feeling the connection with the ground.
• Belly breathing for 2 sets of 10 breaths: You can lie on your back or stay standing. Place both hands on your stomach and begin breathing in and out for the count of 4 seconds each way. As you inhale through your nose, feel your stomach expand like blowing up a balloon; as you exhale through pursed lips, feel your stomach deflate, and your navel draw in.
• Core bracing 2 sets x 8-10 reps: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet raised in a tabletop position. Place your hands by your sides on the mat. Slowly peel your upper back away from the mat and send your gaze forward; crunch your stomach and brace as you press into the mat with both hands. Hold for a moment, then slowly lower your back and head to the mat again.
• Forearm plank pushes 2 sets x 8-10 reps: Start in a forearm plank with your shoulders stacked over your elbows. You can place your knees down for extra support. As you hold the plank, push through your forearms to lift your chest further from the mat, separating your shoulder blades and slightly rounding your upper back. Release, then repeat.

What are the benefits?

Here are some of the benefits you can expect:

Pelvic tilt: Technically a core exercise, the tilt strengthens your abdominal muscles and can help relieve lower back pain. If you struggle with posture, this one is for you, as it also helps engage the deep core muscles like the transverse abdominis. I find this particularly helpful during floor exercises, when I might be arching my lower back rather than connecting with the ground.

Toe splay: Foot-ground connection is crucial for stability and power during standing or balancing exercises. Think squats, deadlifts, or even some yoga poses. It's also a brilliant grounding technique that can relieve stress and help you feel more connected to the body. I recommend closing your eyes and focusing on how your feet feel on the earth beneath you. Take long, deep breaths as a moment of mindfulness.

Belly breathing: Belly breathing is helpful for core activation and engaging the diaphragm, ensuring you breathe properly during exercise, when your body is under tension. This can improve posture and alignment and also help manage blood pressure during heavy lifting. It's a useful way to reduce stress and move the body from the sympathetic nervous system to the parasympathetic nervous system, which means rest and repair. Think of it as a mini reset.

Core bracing: As the name suggests, this drill will help you engage your core properly. As you reach up and forward, you'll draw your navel in and brace down through your stomach, helping to activate the deep core. We want to focus on squeeze-and-release movements throughout to get the most from this move.

Forearm plank pushes: Finally, planks are one of the most common multi-muscle core exercises out there, but often we dump into the shoulders, which takes away from the active engagement of the exercise. Pressing through your forearms and drawing your shoulder blades apart will help you lift your upper body, improve engagement and boost form.

While consoles used to get cheaper a year or two into their life cycle, this generation’s gone the other way. RAM and component shortages have pushed manufacturers to raise prices instead of drop them, which makes any genuine saving on new hardware feel a lot sweeter than it used to.

This Nintendo Switch 2 deal for Prime Day is a good example — the console’s down to AU$624, beating the EOFY price of AU$629 and sitting well below its usual AU$699.95. It’s a modest discount on paper, but the timing matters: Nintendo plans to lift the Switch 2 to AU$769.95 on September 1.

That means grabbing it now saves you AU$145.95 compared to its upcoming price, and right now AU$624 is the lowest Switch 2 price we’ve seen.

Whether another sale pops up before September is anyone’s guess, but this is a straightforward chance to lock in the cheapest price before the hike.

As someone who bought his Switch 2 at launch, I can say that the handheld/console hybrid is really coming into its own now that we're over a year into its life cycle.

Its growing library of games has some genuine first-party bangers in it, like Star Fox, Donkey Kong Bananza and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, and we have Splatoon Raiders arriving later this month. Additionally, developers are squeezing some terrific performance out of the Switch 2 on third-party titles like Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Pragmata.

Seriously, you don’t want to sit this one out — it’s the best Switch 2 deal we’ve seen so far, and once the price hike lands, waiting will feel like a mistake.

I have enabled memory settings on each AI I use regularly. Now I'm wondering if forgetting is the most important thing humans do. A few weeks ago, I enabled ChatGPT to remember more about me. It’s unbelievable how it remembers what I forgot I even told it. Things like my favorite food is fried chicken or a project I started but got distracted and didn’t finish.

ChatGPT also knows how I like things summarized (bulleted points), my kids’ names, and even the last book I read. All these little preferences add up to mean I spend less time explaining myself every time I open a new chat and more time staying productive by using AI. But I got to thinking, we've spent our entire lives treating memory as something precious because it was limited. Now we're entering an era where nothing has to be forgotten. Is that actually a good thing?

The burden of a perfect memory

Our brains are strange, aren’t they? We remember things so distinctly, like the smell after blowing out birthday candles, all the lyrics to "We Didn’t Start the Fire," the first person who broke our hearts and the way our grandmother’s kitchen smelled. Yet, we forget why we walked into the room, where we put the car keys, or someone’s name five seconds after they introduce themselves. Our memories have always been selective. That's just how memory works. It holds on to some moments and quietly lets others fade. But for most of human history, we never had another option. Now, for the first time, we're starting to get one that not only remembers, but uses our memories on cue.

The end of forgetting

Until recently, forgetting wasn't really a choice. You remembered what you remembered, and the rest slowly slipped away. Now we're building technology that offers the opposite. ChatGPT remembers details about you, as does Gemini with Personal Intelligence and Claude memory. Wearables like Bee can record your day so you can search it later, and Alexa+ is getting better at remembering context gathered from past conversations. Taken together, these tools point toward a place where remembering isn't limited to what's stored in our own heads. I can't decide if that sounds incredible... or a little unsettling.

Imagine if nothing faded

What if every embarrassing comment, argument, bad day or mistake was easy to recall? Imagine if all of it stayed exactly as sharp as the moment it happened. Would forgiveness become harder? Would grief last longer? And nostalgia relies entirely on the blurring of edges, so a perfect, high-definition memory might destroy it. Some neuroscientists argue that forgetting isn't a failure of memory at all — it's a feature of a healthy one. Research implies that’s what lets us generalize, adapt and avoid drowning in irrelevant detail.

The oldest question

I've always thought of AI memory as a convenience feature. But as I’ve pondered it lately, I'm coming to think it's asking a much older question. Should humans remember everything? Because maybe the memories that define us aren't just the ones we choose to keep. Maybe they're what remains after everything else has been allowed to quietly, mercifully disappear.

As a kitchen and home appliance reviewer, there's no denying the infatuation I have with Ninja Kitchen. I have loved every product I've tried from the brand, from fun, novelty gadgets to actually practical, borderline normal gizmos. Late last year, Ninja's glass air fryer, the Ninja Crispi, launched in Australia, and I immediately got my hands on it.

After using mine for the past six months, I can honestly say that I swear by the Ninja Crispi every night for easy and deliciously crunchy dinners. And right now, my favourite air fryer is discounted by 37% on Amazon to just AU$188.

What really takes the cake with this discount is that it's the lowest price I've ever seen for the Crispi, undercutting the AU$196 rate on Christmas Day 2025. Better yet, this discount is for all three colourways: Cyberspace, Sage and Stone.

But the Ninja Prime Day discounts don't stop there, as the latest evolution, the Ninja Crispi Pro, is also discounted by 32% to just AU$341.05. The new air fryer only debuted last month in Australia, and this is the first discount I've clocked for the device.

In our Ninja Crispi review, we gave it a massive 4.5 stars, as it was super quiet and delivered surprisingly crispy results. Our reviewer was pleasantly surprised by the device, and found the gadget "reinvented the traditional air fryers" they've used in the past. As for the Crispi Pro, we gave it 4-stars, as we found it was a bit pricey to justify at full cost. However, this tidy 32% discount nips that in the bud.

While I haven't used the Crispi Pro as much as I'd like, I've really appreciated the simplicity and convenience that come with the Crispi. It's become an integral part of my daily routine — from frying up chicken tenders to roasting salmon perfectly, I've enjoyed every meal and side I've made with my Ninja Crispi. But something I've appreciated even more than the tasty results is the fact that I can pop a lid on my leftovers and chuck them in the fridge almost immediately.

Both of these sentiments easily extend to the Pro, as in my short time of having the device, I've thoroughly enjoyed making larger portions of my favourite dishes and using the Pro to help with meal prepping for the week ahead.

The key differences between the air frying pair are that the Crispi Pro comes with three borosilicate containers instead of two, and uses a sliding mechanism to slot into the base, rather than using the Crispi base as a lid. Further, the Pro offers more control over temperature settings, whereas the Crispi has four preset modes to choose from. The timer on both the Crispi and Crispi Pro can be adjusted in minute increments, and you can also add or reduce your cooking time.

It's been six years since Netflix ditched the 30-day free trial for new sign-ups. The bonus perk was a great way to get friends and family on the streaming platform, and it may be returning.

According to a new report, Netflix is "exploring the reintroduction of free trials" in select markets. Netflix confirmed the news to What's on Netflix.

"We regularly test promotions to help prospective members experience the value of Netflix," a spokesperson told What's on Netflix.

Apparently, these test trials range in length and are only for people who have never signed up for Netflix. It's not clear how many countries are seeing the test, but it appears to be available in Brazil.

Netflix Portal, an unaffiliated Brazilian tracker, posted a screenshot that shows a 14-day trial. Some commentators said they were seeing 30 days and one person reported a 7-day version.

Crackdowns and expansion

Since Netflix ditched the free trial program in 2020, the company has been more stringent with new users and even cracked down on account sharing in 2021.

At the same time, in the last couple of years, the streamer has seen an expansion of content from partnering with Spotify for video podcasts to talk shows, live sports and events like the surprisingly controversial Skyscraper Live.

When Netflix threw its hat in the ring in a bid to purchase Warner Bros Discovery, Reuters reported that Netflix has over 325 million paid subscribers, basically the population of the United States.

Subscriber growth may have slowed and it appears Netflix is testing out new (or classic) ways to hook new viewers.

This is a test and Netflix may decide not to roll out free trials, or they could launch it in a different manner. In the meantime, getting Netflix for free isn't impossible but it is tricky.

The rise of humanoid robots is taking shape as countries make a concerted effort to develop and deploy them across different corners of society.

Recently, Japan announced plans to create and deploy approximately 10 million humanoid robots nationwide by 2040, aiming to integrate them across 18 job sectors and address workforce shortages. China, South Korea, Singapore and a slew of other nations have also announced plans to research, invest and possibly deploy humanoid robots across the many physical labor jobs that may require them in the near/far future.

One job sector that may utilize the assistance of humanoid robots sooner rather than later is the medical field. In a groundbreaking world-first moment, two humanoid robots participated in two surgeries.

Here’s why this monumental moment could prove to be a medical breakthrough that we may look back on for years to come.

A team of engineers and surgeons from the University of California San Diego carried out two surgeries with humanoid robots in the mix.

One surgery saw a human surgeon and a humanoid robot successfully carry out a gallbladder removal, while the other medical operation saw two humanoid robots work together to handle a laparoscopic gallbladder removal. Both of these surgeries were conducted as proof-of-concept experiments that were safely performed on non-primate mammals.

A research paper posted on Nature alluded to these operations as an important milestone that could improve how surgeries are done. Michael Yip, one of the research paper’s authors and a faculty member who works within the University of San Diego’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, exclaimed his excitement over it. “This study shows that humanoid robots have a viable future in the field of surgery,” he stated.

“Remotely operated and autonomous humanoid robots have real potential for amplifying access to critical surgeries to which patients would otherwise not have access. This can help address the healthcare crisis not only in the United States, but also worldwide.”

Many of the benefits that come with humanoid robots, such as the cheap price attached to their production, the easy deployment that comes with injecting them into remote locations and the versatility of their skills when it comes to performing various tasks, were brought up by the researchers behind this major medical development.

Even though the humanoid robot-assisted surgeries were successfully performed, a few issues still occurred. Both robots had to be recalibrated several times, which made the procedures take a bit longer than expected. Here’s hoping future experiments knock out all the kinks associated with humanoid robots and result in a flawless experience during medical procedures.

A 2025 study done by the American College of Surgeons pointed to a nationwide surgeon shortage. The data it obtained from the Association of American Medical Colleges showed that 21 states have fewer than the necessary number of general surgeons. That data also predicted a shortage of 13.500 to 86,000 physicians by 2036.

Judging by that last stat, it sounds like humanoid robots may be called upon to fill in for the lack of surgeons and work alongside the remaining human physicians by that time.

The takeaway

Looking at the historic moments that saw robots become a part of surgeries is noteworthy thanks to their successes.

In 1983, Anthrobot (the first surgical robot) assisted surgeons during an arthroscopic knee surgery. In 1985, the PUMA 560 robotic system did the same while participating in a CT-guided brain biopsy. And in 1992, the image-guided ROBODOC made history as it became the first robotic system to operate on a human as it prepared a femur for a prosthetic hip replacement.

And now, we’ve just witnessed a pair of humanoid robots work alongside human surgeons and amongst each other to successfully perform two surgeries. This moment paints a bright future where humanoid robots are used en masse as they assist experienced medical professionals with all sorts of crucial operations. And with further developments in the field of AI, that could result in humanoid robots acting independently during surgical procedures.

Paramount+ is a great streaming service for building your next movie marathon. It adds dozens of movies to the platform each month, and even just added 70 new movies and shows on July 1. Many of these are beloved classics or more modern hits, but a few times a month, you even get brand-new movies from Paramount Skydance studios.

This week, I've selected a new movie getting its streaming debut, as well as a few older movies that are absolutely. At the top of the list is "Wardriver," a new crime thriller from last year that's finally arriving on Paramount+. Once you're done streaming that, check out "City of God," which is one of the best foreign language films of this century. Finally, I'm recommending "Glory," a Denzel Washington movie that earned him his first Oscar.

'Wardriver'

Genre: Crime thriller movie

What's it about? "Wardriver" stars Dane DeHaan as Cole, a hacker. After getting caught up in a cyber heist, he's lured into a deadly game of cat and mouse. If he's not careful, a botched line of code could see him dead.

Why you should watch it: This one is complicated. On the one hand, it got rave reviews from critics. It's currently rated 100% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes. But audiences were far less kind, scoring it just 57% fresh. You'll need to stream it this weekend to see who is right.

'City of God' (2002)

Genre: Brazilian epic crime movie

What's it about: Set in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, "City of God" is centered around Rocket (Alexandre Rodrigues), a resident of Cidade de Deus (City of God) favela in Rio de Janeiro. He dreams of being a photographer, and when a gang war between drug dealers Li'l Zé (Leandro Firmino) and Carrot (Matheus Nachtergaele) breaks out in the favela, he seizes the opportunity to find a life outside the Brazilian slum.

Why you should watch it: In one of the worst Oscars snubs in recent memory, "City of God" didn't make the shortlist for Best Foreign Language Film, despite earning nominations for Best Director, Best Cinematography and more. Don't make the same mistake; stream this movie now and see for yourself why this should have taken home a golden statuette.

'Glory' (1989)

Genre: Epic war movie

What's it about? "Glory" tells the story of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment. This was the first all-Black regiment not just in the Civil War, but in the U.S. military. The film features an ensemble performance that includes Matthew Broderick and Cary Elwes as officers, as well as Morgan Freeman, Andre Braugher, and Denzel Washington as some of the former slaves and freedmen fighting in the infantry ranks.

Why you should watch it: "Glory" is nearly four decades old, but still holds up visually against its modern counterparts. Denzel also wins an Oscar for his performance as Trip, who often serves as a devil's advocate-like figure throughout the movie. It's a performance that leads to some emotionally powerful moments, and a movie that's a must-watch.

Editor's Choice

You might assume that all of the best TV antennas will more or less pick up the same number of channels and the same channel quality. But that isn't exactly the case: The Axevoi ANT-CS8268 is built to be the go-to option for cord-cutters who simply want great reception and don't want to think too hard about picking an antenna.

Just don't believe what it says on the box. This antenna is billed as offering a "3,200-plus-mile" reception range, which physically isn't possible because TV signals would be blocked by the actual curvature of the Earth. Maybe they mean square miles? It’s definitely not clear on the listings.

Setting aside the silly claims about range, is this antenna actually worth considering? Or should you go for a different model? I've been testing it to find out.

ANT-CS8268 Antenna review: Price and availability

The ANT-CS8268 sells broadly across the major e-commerce platforms, and costs around $65 on Amazon, at least at the time of this writing. That puts it in the mid-range of pricing and above models from the likes of Channel Master, but well below premium VHF-focused outdoor models.

The antenna is widely available, so it shouldn't be hard to find if you're interested in buying it.

ANT-CS8268 Antenna review: Design and setup

The ANT-CS8268 is a flat panel made of ABS plastic, measuring 9.41 x 5.55 x 0.52 inches. It's thicker than the paper-thin antenna models that have become more popular over the past few years, like those from the likes of Channel Master, but it's still relatively thin.

The antenna has a little stand that pops out on the back of it, though I found it to be flimsy and difficult to keep in place. There are also small holes on the back of the antenna which you can use to mount it to a wall with nails or screws. Included in the box are both adhesive and drywall hooks and screws if you need them.

The antenna has a 4-meter coaxial cable that's fixed, so you can't remove it. If it breaks, you'll need to buy a new antenna altogether. That's a little disappointing. While I'm glad the cable is pretty long, fixed cables can make placement more complicated — not to mention the fact that they limit repairability.

Also in the box is the small amplifier, which is powered by a standard USB connection (use the USB port on the back of your TV if you have one available). The amplifier has a small switch on it for so-called short and long range amplification.

Setting it all up is extremely easy and took less than five minutes. Once you figure out where and how you want to place the antenna, you'll connect the amplifier to your TV through the coaxial port and the USB port for power. Then connect the antenna to the amplifier, scan for channels on your TV, and you should be good to go.

ANT-CS8268 Antenna review: Performance and reception

Okay, so the antenna certainly can't reach radios 3,200 miles away. But it does actually perform decently well, regardless. The ANT-CS8268 covers both VHF (170-240MHz) and UHF (470-860MHz) bands and it supports the major global terrestrial standards — ATSC, DVB-T/T2, ISDB-T, and DTMB.

I pulled in 90 channels with the antenna unamplified, 71 with the short-range amplifier setting, and 79 with the long-range option. The catch is that "channels picked up" and "channels worth watching" are not the same thing. A fair number of those 90 were too noisy to actually watch, and the count alone oversells what you're really getting. Around 40 of the channels it pulled were actually watchable – less than half.

For comparison, I tested the $35 Channel Master FLATenna 35 in the same spot. It pulled 83 channels, and I found it offered a higher-quality signal across the board.

In a typical suburban setup within about 25 miles of the towers, the ANT-CS8268 should reliably connect to a good 20 channels or so with enough signal strength to watch without too much distraction.

The amplifier is a double-edged sword. The 25dB inline amp is likely to improve weak-channel retention if you're in a fringe or rural area. But if you're close to the towers, leaving it on actively hurts your signal. Strong signals overload the amp and degrade the picture, so you have to manually toggle it off.

Placement, of course, matters a lot too, as it does with any indoor entry. It'll perform at its best near a window or at least mounted high on a wall. And, the signal can be degraded by obstacles, including things like concrete. Not only that, but if you're far enough away from towers, your signal could dramatically change depending on the weather.

Verdict

For an urban or suburban cord-cutter living within 15 to 25 miles of the towers, the ANT-CS8268 is a solid antenna. It looks nice enough, and performs decently well, and while I would have liked a removable cable, at least the fixed one is long enough for most.

Ultimately, in my specific area, the much cheaper Channel Master FLATenna 35 performed better, getting a higher quality signal much of the time. That doesn't necessarily mean that everyone will have the same experience, though, as things vary a lot depending on proximity to towers and the geography that your home is in.

Additionally, if you are willing to put something on the roof of your home, you might find that you can get something more powerful at a similar price, though that, of course, only covers the antenna itself and not the other wiring you'll need in your home. If you already have that infrastructure set up for a roof-mounted antenna, though, there are probably other options worth considering. If you’re willing to go all out, you could get an antenna like the Antop AT-800SBS HD Smart Panel Antenna, which we’ve found to be the best indoor/outdoor antenna, but comes at a higher price.

My favorite Johnnie-O deals

First up is the psychological horror flick "Daniel Isn't Real," which stars Patrick Schwarzenegger as the titular Daniel. Then, you'll want to check out "The Legend of Molly Johnson," which is a highly rated Australian movie also known as "The Drover's Wife." Finally, "Redux Redux" makes its streaming debut after arriving in theaters earlier this year. It's directed by a pair of brothers and stars their sister, and that familial connection seems to have paid off with excellent reviews.

'Daniel Isn't Real' (2019)

Genre: Psychological horror movie

What's it about? Luke (Miles Robbins) witnesses a mass shooting as a kid, and quickly becomes friends with Daniel (Patrick Schwarzenegger), another kid he meets at the scene. Except nobody else can see Daniel, which starts to become a problem when Daniel comes back into Luke's life when the latter is in college.

Why you need to watch it: This movie is not for the faint of heart. It delivers twist after twist, and you won't see the ending coming until it's too late. If you love horror movies, this is a must-watch.

'The Legend of Molly Johnson' (2022)

Genre: Australian Western movie

What's it about? Directed, written, co-produced by and starring Leah Purcell, "The Legend of Molly Johnson" is adapted from her 2016 play of the same name, which in turn adapted a short story from 1892. In it, Molly (Purcell) is the pregnant wife of a drover (cowboy) who finds herself giving birth alone in violent times. That is, until Yadaka (Rob Collins) shows up, but it turns out he's on the run from the law and is being chased by the new military commander in the district (Sam Reid).

Why you need to watch it: If you're like me, having the vampire Lestat (Reid) in this movie is reason enough to watch it. But even without him, this gritty Western is full of drama, and it's not often you get to stream an Australian auteur film. Make time for this one.

'Redux Redux' (2026)

Genre: Sci-fi thriller movie

What's it about? Also titled "Find. Kill. Repeat.," this sci-fi thriller is set in a universe where there are numerous other parallel universes. Unfortunately for Irene (Michaela McManus), her daughter Anna (Grace Van Dien) is murdered by a restaurant cook named Neville (Jerry Holm) in every one of these universes.

Why you should watch it: "Redux Redux" is another auteur film, directed, written and co-produced by the brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus. They've cast their sister, Michaela, in the lead role, and by most accounts, the siblings knocked this one out of the park. It's currently at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences rate it lower at just 62%.

I’ve been a big fan of the Alienware 34 QD-OLED gaming monitor series since its launch in 2022. Subsequent models have introduced subtle but necessary improvements over the years, maintaining the line’s sterling reputation. Best of all, the panel is now brighter than before, which addresses my chief complaint with prior versions.

The Alienware 34 280Hz OLED is a phenomenal gaming monitor thanks to its sleek, space-saving design, vibrant picture quality, and buttery smooth performance.

Elegant design

The Alienware AW3426DW shares the same design as its predecessor, which I’m okay with given how lovely and practical it still is. It won’t look out of place in an office environment or a gaming den.

With its panel measuring 32.05 x 14.23 x 4.38 inches, you’ll need a decent-sized table for this beauty, but nothing overly large. The flat stand is unobtrusive, so it’s unlikely to get in the way of peripherals like your keyboard and mouse. The cutaway on the stand’s shaft makes cable management easy, and you can raise or lower the monitor to your desired height.

You can raise or lower the screen by 4.3 inches along the stand’s shaft and tilt it backward by 5 degrees or forward by up to 21 degrees. You can also swivel the screen 20 degrees left and right. Adjusting the screen to your preferred viewing angle is seamless and should take less than a minute.

There’s a good selection of ports on the back, including a pair of HDMI 2.1 ports, a DisplayPort, a USB-A port, a USB-B port, and a single USB-C port. There’s also an OSD (on-screen display) joystick just below the ports, which you use to access and navigate the display settings.

Again, I’m glad Alienware didn’t change the AW3426DW’s design, since it’s about as perfect as you can get. It might not immediately scream “gaming monitor,” but it keeps the focus on the display and, thus, on whatever game you’re currently playing.

Vivid panel

The Alienware AW3426DW draws you into whatever game you’re playing thanks to its immersive 1800R curvature, sharp 3,440 x 1,440 resolution, and expansive 21:9 aspect ratio. The image quality is so good that you won’t mind that it’s not a 4K OLED panel.

I tested Cyberpunk 2077 and was blown away by the rich picture quality. The increased contrast between dark and light elements is noticeable on this updated panel, making colors feel more vibrant. It’s also brighter than other OLED gaming monitors, resulting in a more vivid image overall.

Our lab tests align with my own testing. In its standard display mode, the AW3426DW produces oversaturated colors in sRGB and DCI-P3, while maintaining good color accuracy (Delta-E). As shown in the table above, its color representation and accuracy are comparable to those of the $899 Asus ROG Swift OLED (PG34WCDM) and the $349 Alienware 27 AW2726DM.

Where the AW3426DW literally outshines the competition is in brightness, which is generally around 300 nits. We even saw HDR nearly hit 500 nits on 10% of the display in certain modes. That might not sound high, but considering how similar gaming monitors are in the 200 to 250 nit range, this is marvelous. Right now, it’s one of the brightest gaming monitors I’ve tested.

You’ll find 11 display modes here. This includes modes dedicated to game genres like FPS, RTS, and Sports. The monitor also has a Creator mode, which offers better color accuracy for creatives (as the name suggests). Other than that, the modes are only slightly different from one another, depending on what they’re designed for.

Excellent performance

The AW3426DW performs like a dream thanks to its high 280Hz refresh rate and low 0.03ms response time. Compatibility with Nvidia G-Sync and AMD FreeSync also ensures a buttery-smooth gaming experience for both casual gamers and professionals.

I tested the AW3426DW by connecting it to the new Alienware 16 Area-51 gaming laptop, which packs an Intel Core Ultra 9 290HX CPU, an Nvidia RTX 5080 GPU, and 32GB RAM. You don’t need a gaming rig this powerful to enjoy the monitor, but having the extra horsepower helps if you’re trying to maximize frame rates to match the refresh rate.

Thanks to the high refresh rate and low latency, I had a smooth time playing Cyberpunk 2077. I couldn’t get the frame rate anywhere near the refresh rate, but having all that extra headroom effectively eliminates any choppiness. I also didn’t notice any input lag. Like previous models, you’ll get excellent gaming performance from the AW3426DW.

Intuitive UI

We get the same basic interface as on previous models. The UI features a black-and-gray background with blue-and-white lettering. Within the menus, you’ll find the aforementioned display modes and other settings to adjust the picture to your liking. While there’s certainly a lot to go through, it’s easy enough to find what you’re looking for.

As always, the OSD joystick you use to navigate the menus is responsive and easy to reach. It isn’t flimsy either, despite being a relatively small joystick.

Alienware 34 280Hz QD-OLED review: The downs

If you’re new to the Alienware 34 QD-OLED series, you’re in for a treat thanks to everything this gaming monitor offers. However, if you own the previous model, you might want to hold off.

A minor upgrade

The Alienware AW3426DW is a nearly perfect gaming monitor for what it offers. If you’ve never owned a monitor in this lineup, then this is an easy recommendation. This is especially true thanks to its $799 asking price.

While the AW3426DW is undeniably great, it’s not a mandatory upgrade if you own its direct predecessor. Yes, the higher refresh rate and sharper image make a difference, but not a major one. Besides that, the AW3426DW has the same design as before and many of the same features.

If you own the original AW3423DW — which has lower performance and a less desk-friendly design — then upgrading to the AW3426DW is a no-brainer. If you have the 2025 model, then you can skip this one, as that older monitor is still fantastic.

Alienware 34 280Hz QD-OLED review: Verdict

The Alienware AW3426DW is a phenomenal gaming monitor thanks to its immersive, sharp display, excellent performance, and elegant design. Though it’s not a major upgrade from last year’s model, it’s an easy choice for anyone looking to upgrade from an older monitor. And in a time when everything is going up in price, I commend Alienware for keeping this at $799.

If you’re looking for a smaller and more affordable gaming monitor with a QD-OLED panel and fast performance, you can’t go wrong with the $349 Alienware 27 AW2726DM. And if you’re willing to pay $100 for a more overtly “gaming” monitor, then the Asus ROG Swift OLED is a phenomenal pick.

Though there are certainly other solid options, few deliver the same brilliant experience as the Alienware AW3426DM. This is still my favorite gaming monitor line. As such, this model comes with my highest recommendation. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

Earlier this week, we heard about a report claiming that the foldable iPhone Ultra may not be released alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Instead, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said it would likely be released a little later in the year due to supply issues — which is exactly what happened with the release of the iPhone X back in 2017.

But a new report has refuted that assessment, claiming that the iPhone Ultra will land at the same time as its non-folding compatriots. According to China's Cailian Press, sources from the supply chain claim that a September delivery should be "no problem" and that "they have not heard" of any potential delay in release.

Kuo's initial report suggested that the complex production would limit the availability of the iPhone Ultra following an official reveal at the September Apple event. Apparently, Apple would only have 0.5 to 1 million units ready to ship in Q3 2026, which is a fraction of the ten million units Apple is expected to ship over the course of the next 12 months.

Kuo warned that this could lead to Apple pushing the official pre-order and release dates back to Q4. Such a limited supply would also likely lead to lengthy wait times and scalpers attempting to capitalize on the situation.

But Cailian Press's sources paint a different picture. They claim that the iPhone Ultra's design has been finalized, and the companies involved are "currently in peak production season." That suggests that production on this year's iPhones is already underway and happening as expected.

What's actually happening?

So who do we believe? That's a very tricky question, to be honest, and we're definitely not going to get any official comment from Apple. The company keeps everything very close to its chest, and that means the first time we'll hear about official iPhone Ultra release details is at the launch event in September.

It's possible that both reports have an air of truth to them. The iPhone Ultra could arrive in September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, but could only be available in limited quantities at first. If that's the case, we could see the foldable iPhone sell out quite quickly — even if the starting price really is as high as $2,500.

We definitely don't recommend rewarding scalpers for buying up all the stock they can, so avoid buying the iPhone Ultra from resellers wherever possible. If you do have your heart set on purchasing a foldable iPhone, remember that Apple has a vested interest in restocking as quickly as possible. So just wait a little while

Apple typically launches a headline Back to School promotion in June or July in the United States and Canada, offering students and educational staff a great opportunity to save some money. That's especially important this year, since Apple recently raised prices on all its MacBooks and iPads — including the much-loved MacBook Neo.

Last year's campaign arrived on June 17 — and while Apple's Education Store is seemingly updated for the 2026-2027 school year, there doesn't seem to be what I'd call a standout offer yet. In years past, we had gift cards or free accessories with purchases, but in 2026 Apple is currently keeping things limited to "education savings" on a few key products.

There could still be a larger promotion waiting in the wings. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman predicted on X that we would see Apple's Back to School offering arrive last week, but didn't elaborate on what it might entail.

Back in 2017 and 2018, Apple waited until July 12 to launch its Back to School promotion, so there is precedent for waiting this late for an eye-catching offer to drop.

However, unlike in previous years, Apple is tightening up on who actually qualifies for education savings and also requiring proof.

So, let's dive into exactly what you can expect from Apple's Back to School offering right now, how you qualify, and why you'll want to take advantage of any price drops you can right now.

Apple's Back to School Promotion: What you (currently) get

What you actually get in the Apple Back to School promotion can change from year to year. Last year, students would receive a free accessory, depending on what they bought. So if you picked up a MacBook, you could get a $179 pair of AirPods 4 with noise cancelling for free. Likewise, if you bought an iPad, you could pick up a $119 Apple Pencil Pro free of charge thanks to the promotion.

It was a more prescriptive offer than the 2024 Back to School promotion when Apple handed out a $150 gift card with qualifying purchases.

Judging by the state of Apple's Education Store, the current deals you can get are the following:

• The MacBook Air is $100 less with Education Savings, bringing the starting price down from $1,299 to $1,119.
• The Apple Watch Series 11 has been reduced by $40 bringing the starting price down to $359 from $399 with Education Savings.
• The student-focused MacBook Neo is also $100 less and down to a starting price of $599 from $699.
• The MacBook Pro is down to a starting price of $1,899.
• The iPad Air starts at $699 with the Education Savings offer applied.
• Students can get Apple Creator Studio for $2.99 per month rather than the regular $12.99 a month price.
• Free engravings on accessories like AirPods 4, Apple Pencil, and iPhone 17 phone case

Those reductions on MacBooks are somewhat bittersweet, given that all they really do is mitigate some of the damage from the price increases Apple put in place in June.

While Apple Watches haven't yet had their prices increased, last month Apple revealed that both versions of the MacBook Air (13-inch and 15-inch) would cost $200 more while the MacBook Neo would cost $100 more.

Of course, any price reduction is music to my ears, but I would really like to see a single headline-grabbing promotion like a free accessory, gift card or further price drop rolled out over the next few days.

Apple's Back to School Promotion: Who can qualify

Apple's promotion is open to K-12 employees, including teachers and school board members, plus higher education faculty, staff, and students. Any parents of kids heading to college can also qualify.

In order to verify that you meet the above conditions, Apple is using a third-party platform called UNiDAYS, which you'll need to sign up for (by following the prompts) if you want to complete a purchase. You will need to input information like your name, the name of your school, and your faculty email address.

Once you've signed up to the platform, you'll be able to access a number of education-focused discounts.

Apple's Back to School Promotion: Will it even happen?

Apple attempted to insulate its customers as much as possible from industry price hikes driven by rising demand from AI development. Unfortunately, CEO Tim Cook admitted the "unprecedented challenge" had forced them to increase prices. And there's no guarantee they'll go back down again any time soon.

“We’re doing our best to mitigate the huge increases that are being passed to us, and we’ve been trying to shield our customers from the increases, but the situation has become unsustainable," Cook told the WSJ earlier this year.

That's why when opportunities to save money come around, it's sensible to act on them swiftly. While the iPhone and Apple Watch were excluded from the price hikes, the new models expected to arrive in September will almost certainly carry higher launch prices than last year's models.

The obvious question, of course, is whether or not a Back to School promotion will even happen in 2026? Apple, like every company, ultimately needs to make money and it might decide this year it simply can't (or won't) mount a sale when component prices are so steep.

Literally 24 hours ago, I wrote an article praising Meta for pushing an emergency update to its smart glasses that disables the camera if someone tampers with the recording LED. I thought Zuckerberg was finally taking the peeping tom problem seriously.

Turns out I was an idiot.

According to a new report from the Financial Times, Meta is currently testing “super sensing” AI glasses that will continuously record your life — taking photos every few seconds and constantly listening to your audio. And the grand solution for the recording LED that warns bystanders? They’re just going to turn it off.

And with this new bombshell, it seems like Meta’s lost the privacy plot. The company didn’t build a software lock to keep the creeps out, they built one so they could be the only ones in the house.

‘LED fatigue’

The FT report notes that execs plan to not activate the LED when these super-sensing features are in use. Why? Well, in a 2025 policy paper, Meta laid the groundwork for this: “If the LED blinked for extended periods at a time… people could stop noticing it.”

For all the logic I’ve heard in my many years in this job, this is simply phenomenal gymnastics. “Your honor, I realized the fire alarm was annoying everyone, so I simply turned it off while the building burned down. You’re welcome,” says the lawyer in my head

The idea is that continuous recording will allow AI to help you “query what you saw or heard, or recall your day.” But to do that, it has to wiretap every single person you interact with, which is super illegal in multiple U.S. states (and heavily regulated in the U.K.).

The software update threat

Prototype-aside, here’s the scariest line in the FT report: “The super-sensing features could also be activated on Meta’s existing glasses via a software update.”

Yesterday, I was relieved that Meta built a software pipeline to stop a cottage industry of hackers breeding a new wave of creeps. Today, I’m realizing that the same pipeline could turn my glasses on my desk into a 24/7 surveillance device. There’s a big difference between words and action, and for all their talk of privacy, Meta doesn’t seem to be fixing the loophole; they seem to be just monopolizing it.

The proposed system from Meta argues that the raw content wouldn’t be stored. Instead, the metadata from the audio and images would be extracted and uploaded to the company’s servers for the AI to query. Some argue that it has “fewer privacy implications” — I see tech-bro speak for: "we aren’t keeping your recordings, we’re just taking a highly detailed, AI-generated transcript of everything you said and did."

Something has to change

Several people told FT that “plans could still change” around whether the LED is activated or not. But the fact that this is a serious thought Meta is having after all the backlash is kind of crazy.

It also raises an interesting legal question. We already know that super-sensing would raise all kinds of legal red flags — specifically, recording audio of a third party without their consent. But in that situation, are you (the wearer) committing a crime by walking into a coffee shop with these on? Or is Meta?

Woodrow Hartzog, a professor of law at Boston University, is absolutely talking my language when he told the FT that lawmakers need to update regulations for the reality of “always-on, always-seeing devices.” He’s absolutely on the money here. “There’s no one law that addresses all the different dangerous ways these tools have been designed and built,” Hartzog commented.

Yesterday, I wrote that true privacy protection will only happen when society decides that secret recording is socially unacceptable, and that we need to treat the cottage industry of Etsy modders who disable these lights like wiretappers.

It turns out we shouldn’t just be worried about the modders. We need to be worried about the trillion-dollar company too, because exactly as I said, relying on them to police themselves “never quite works out the way you think.”

I just didn’t expect that to be proven right within the space of a single day.

I’ve combed through Netflix’s July 2026 slate and picked out the latest thrillers hitting the world’s biggest streaming service. These include a Christopher Nolan classic that’s the perfect watch ahead of “The Odyssey.” Or how about a mafia movie that stars Al Pacino?

3 new to Netflix thrillers to watch this week

‘Donnie Brasco’ (1997)

Based on a true story, Al Pacino plays a mob boss in this crime thriller from director Mike Newell. It’s a story of torn loyalties, deception, and finding kinship in unexpected places. Also starring Johnny Depp, it’s a certified ‘90s classic based on the 1988 non-fiction book “Donnie Brasco: My Undercover Life in the Mafia.” It’s a must-watch for mob movie fans, and while Depp’s character is the lead protagonist, it’s definitely Pacino who steals the show.

Joespho Pistone (Depp) is an FBI agent posing as a jewel thief to attract the attention of the Bonanno crime family, one of the major mafia groups in 1970s New York. Under the name Donnie Brasco, he becomes part of hitman Benjamin “Lefty” Ruggiero’s (Al Pacino) inner circle. Working from the inside to bring down the crime organization becomes complicated when he develops a real connection with Lefty, and his loyalties are tested.

‘Memento’ (2000)

The hype surrounding Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” is building to a fever pitch with early reviews suggesting it’s another impressive blockbuster from one of the era’s most popular filmmakers. So, if you’re in the mood to watch a few of Nolan’s previous flicks to celebrate its imminent arrival, check out the psychological thriller “Memento." Nolan plays with a non-linear narrative in interesting ways, giving viewers an engrossing mystery to solve.

Alternating between black-and-white and color sequences, the thriller centers on Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce), an insurance investigator who can't create new memories. Using a series of Polaroid photographs, handwritten notes, and tattoos inked on his own skin, he attempts to track down the man he believes is responsible for killing his wife. The movie builds up to a mind-bending twist, and rewards a second watch with the full picture clear.

"Snowden" (2016)

“Snowden” is another movie based on real history. Directed by Oliver Stone, known for genre heavyweights like “Scarface” and “Midnight Express,” it takes the actions of Edward Snowden and adapts them into a tension-fueled drama. At times the movie’s thriller foundations conflict with the reality of the situation, but Joseph Gordon-Levitt gives a strong performance as the eponymous whistleblower, and the supporting cast is also great.

After a stakes-setting opening, in which Snowden holds a clandestine meeting with a journalist, this thriller flashes back to 2004 to explore how the former CIA employee went from working within the U.S. intelligence department to leaking classified information. The movie attempts to explore Snowden’s motivation, his conflicted headspace over whether to turn whistleblower, and how his actions led to major reforms and a wave of public scrutiny.

Asics Shoes

Toyota’s Prius has long been hailed as the king of hybrid cars, offering exceptional fuel economy at a modest price point. When I tested the plug-in hybrid version last year, it gave this highly esteemed vehicle a taste of pure electric power.

Today, there are more hybrid cars than ever before — which is great, given the recent volatility in gas prices. With more competition, there’s added pressure to prove the value of choosing a hybrid over the alternatives.

That’s why I drove the 2026 Toyota Prius and 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid each for a week to get a better idea of how they perform and what features they offer. You might be surprised by which one I ultimately recommend.

Toyota Prius vs. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: Specifications

Toyota Prius vs. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: Design

Both designs are carried over from their predecessors, but I have a clear favorite. Without a doubt, it’s the Toyota Prius, thanks to the way this hatchback fuses modern and futuristic aesthetics to stand out on the road. There’s a charming minimalism to the design, especially the continuous, sweeping curved profile that gives off the look of a low-slung sports coupe. I also love how the continuous rear light bar stretches across the trunk lid, giving the illusion of a built-in spoiler.

The 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is a bit too conventional for my taste. While the front exudes a sporty look with its low-profile grille, Hyundai’s geometric design language adds odd, triangular creases chiseled into the side panels. That same angular, edgy theme continues in the back, but I just find the overall package far less striking.

Winner: Toyota Prius

Toyota Prius vs. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: Fuel economy

Looking at their specs, they offer relatively similar numbers — 49 mpg combined for the Prius and 50 mpg combined for the Elantra Hybrid. I’m honestly shocked because it proves that Toyota’s hybrids are no longer untouchable in this category. Between the two, the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid emerges as the clear winner, hitting a spot-on 50 mpg average during my week of testing.

Now, I’m pretty gentle with acceleration and braking whenever I test hybrids because I’m always chasing the best possible efficiency. There’s an art to driving them because with the Elantra Hybrid, I have to carefully monitor my throttle and speed for when the “EV” indicator kicks on. It pays off: in one of my short-range tests, I achieved an astounding 72.9 mpg over a 17.5-mile trek on mostly local roads.

Meanwhile, the Prius certainly doesn’t disappoint, but it falls short of the Elantra with the 46.2 mpg I averaged. Still, you can’t count it out just yet. The 2026 Toyota Prius Limited AWD hit 57 mpg during one of my long-distance test with mostly highway driving. Just like with the Elantra, you simply have to be mindful of your acceleration and speed to keep its “EV” mode sustained for as long as possible.

Hybrids aren’t particularly known for their driving performance, but the Prius gets my vote here for a couple of reasons. First of all, it is much punchier when accelerating from a complete stop, thanks in part to its more powerful 2.0-liter engine. Even in ECO mode, it feels quicker off the line than the Elantra, and that gap becomes even more noticeable when switching into Sport mode to overtake slower cars.

In contrast, the 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited offers a much more relaxed experience. Don’t get me wrong — it is perfectly fine for commuters who just need to get to work and back, but its 1.6-liter hybrid engine delivers a modest 139 horsepower that simply isn't as responsive.

The 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited takes the crown when it comes to interior comfort and passenger space. Not only does the cabin look more modern thanks to the lighter tone of the seats, but it also offers far more rear legroom, allowing taller adults to stretch out on longer commutes.

On top of that, I really love Hyundai's Highway Driving Assist for making the drive even more relaxing. The dedicated lane-centering button right on the steering wheel keeps the vehicle perfectly centered, whether cruise control is activated or not. Finally, this trim also comes with a sunroof for when I want fresh air without opening the windows.

Thanks to its hatchback design, the Prius offers a much larger trunk that makes it easier to stow oversized packages — which can be expanded even further by folding down the rear seats. However, while it does offer the more spacious cargo area, rear legroom is heavily compromised, leaving the backseat feeling cramped. And while the Prius features its own suite of driver assists, I still find the Elantra’s package to be much more helpful on long highway drives.

In my experience, Hyundai tends to be incredibly generous with adding extra features to its higher trims — but that isn't quite the case with the Elantra Hybrid. Sure, it still gets conveniences like a Bose premium sound system, adaptive cruise control, a sunroof, and ventilated seats, but you won’t find high-tech extras like blind-spot camera monitors, a 360-degree camera system, or automatic lane-change assist.

Despite this, I can’t overlook the 2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited’s lower $31,285 as-tested price. Compared to the Prius’ much higher $40,270 tested cost, it’s the kind of upfront price cut that offers instant and long-term savings.

Then again, the Prius strikes back by leveraging Toyota's legendary reputation for reliability and bulletproof resale value. While you will absolutely pay an $8,985 premium for it initially, history proves that Toyota hybrids retain their value remarkably well, allowing you to potentially recoup a significant chunk of that investment down the road.

Combined with a time-tested powertrain renowned for running trouble-free for hundreds of thousands of miles, the Prius promises incredibly low ownership costs over the long haul.

Toyota Prius vs. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: Verdict

After tallying up the numbers, this comparison ends in a tie — proving that you can’t go wrong with either vehicle if you crave savings at the pump. Not surprisingly, the Prius continues its heritage of being a reliable hybrid, but it pairs that legendary efficiency with a vastly sportier aesthetic that makes it a genuinely fun drive. However, you're still paying a steep premium to get this top-rated hybrid.

That’s where the Hyundai Elantra Hybrid Limited takes a completely different approach, prioritizing maximum comfort, commuter-friendly tech, and incredible value. Its traditional sedan layout gives passengers plenty of physical breathing room, and it is genuinely shocking how thoroughly it beats the Prius when it comes down to real-world efficiency. Paired with its much lower price tag, the Elantra is the hybrid I would gladly spend my own money on.
