From the quality of their craftmanship to the exceptional comfort they provide, the best luxury mattresses make bedtime feel like an indulgent event that you look forward to all day. While it's true that luxury mattresses often command a higher price tag, you don't always have to spend a fortune to get the bed of your dreams.

We know this because our team of expert mattress testers have spent over 100 hours testing the best mattresses on the market to bring you our top luxury recommendations. We specifically look at build quality, the materials used and the sleep comfort they provide. We also take into account the benefits that come with your purchase that elevate it to truly luxurious status.

Our overall top pick is the Saatva Classic mattress as it embodies everything we look for in a luxury mattress, from free White Glove delivery, superb support for practically all sleepers and quality, handcrafted construction using premium materials. While it does come at a premium price, the good news is that there's usually a mattress sale in play, which means that you can buy the Classic — along with our other favorite luxury mattresses — at a discounted price.

Reasons to avoid

The Saatva Classic is a luxury innerspring hybrid mattress, handcrafted in the US from premium materials, including organic cotton, recycled steel coils and CertiPUR-US certified memory foam. It gained an unprecedented perfect score in our Saatva Classic mattress review, with our testers concluding that it suits almost every type of sleeper. In addition to its unbeatable comfort and support, the Classic wouldn't look out of place in a 5-star hotel, making it the clear choice for our overall best luxury mattress.

When testing a mattress, we look at five key areas of performance — and the Saatva Classic out-performed every other mattress we've ever reviewed. It delivers best in class temperature regulation, pressure relief and edge support. That makes it an excellent mattress for hot sleepers seeking soothing body-contouring support in all sleep positions, as well as providing a reliably sturdy edge to sleep right up to. The only metric that it didn't quite score full marks for was for motion isolation, but it's still the best hybrid for dampening movement across the surface of the bed.

Hot on it's heels is the Helix Midnight Luxe (#3 in this guide), a mattress designed specifically for side sleepers. Like the Saatva, the Luxe is a luxury hybrid that balances blissful pressure relief with zoned lumbar support for back pain relief. However, the Luxe — which also costs in the region of $1,800 for a queen — offers slightly more 'sink' than the ultra responsive Classic. (Those denser and slower moving foams also makes switching positions a bit of a chore).

With three customisable firmness options and two heights to choose from, we recommend the Saatva Classic to back, side and stomach sleepers, particularly those who sleep hot or experience back pain. However, with a maximum weight capacity of 600lbs, we don't recommend it to those who exceed this (either solo or combined). A queen size Classic tends to drop to $1,779 from $2,179 during key Saatva mattress sales, which we see during major holidays like Black Friday and Memorial Day. That's excellent value for money for a mattress of this calibre, especially with benefits including free White Glove delivery, a 365 night sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

Best luxury mattress for sheer value

Breathable back support and cloud-like comfort for all sleep positions at a mid-range price

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Height: 13"
Available sizes: 8
Price range: Mid-range
Best for: Side, back, combination sleepers, back pain
Who should avoid: Restless sleepers who share a bed

Reasons to buy

+
Comfort and support in one package
+
Cool enough for most sleepers
+
Stable edge support
+
Lifetime warranty
+
365-night sleep trial

Reasons to avoid

-
Cover could be plusher
-
Some noticeable motion transfer

The DreamCloud Premier Hybrid is the brand's middle child that often gets overlooked but hits all the right notes in terms of comfort vs value for money. Like the Saatva above and the Helix Midnight Luxe below, it boasts a plush, quilted Euro top cover for soothing pressure relief and individually wrapped coils for stability and support. However, at $1,099 for a queen after discounts, it's significantly cheaper than both rivals, making it the best luxury mattress for sheer value.

Our lead tester — a solo sleeper who weighs under 115lb — found the Premier to contour along the touch points of the mattress in all sleep positions without ever sinking in. Instead, it's a mattress you sleep in top of with a weightless feel. That said, heavier bodies will likely find that it has more 'give', as body type and weight affects mattress firmness.

It doesn't boast the same specialist cooling tech that you'll get in the DreamCloud Ultra (#6), but the Premier does do a solid job of keeping temperatures regulated. You're unlikely to overheat on this bed, but very hot sleepers might fare better on the Bear Elite Hybrid (#5), which is our top cooling option. Or, if night sweats are stopping you from sleeping and you have more budget to play with, the Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance XL Elite (in our #also-tested section).

Elsewhere, support around the edge is reliable while motion isolation is passable (restless sleepers who share a bed will be better off on the Saatva Classic at #1). Plus, a blend of therapeutic memory foam and zoned, denser foam provides targeted lumbar support. That makes it a great option for those with aches and pain. (Again, for significant back pain, our top recommendation is the Saatva Classic above). But with a steady price of $1,099 for a queen, the Premier provides luxurious comfort and support without blowing a giant hole in your bank account.

Best luxury mattress for side sleepers

Outstanding pressure relief and sumptuous support for anyone who sleeps on their side

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Height: 13.5"
Available sizes: 8
Price range: 13.5"
Best for: Side sleepers, back sleepers, back pain
Who should avoid: Stomach sleepers

Reasons to buy

+
Plush pressure relief for side sleeping
+
Excellent motion isolation
+
Luxurious pillow-top
+
Enhanced lumbar support

Reasons to avoid

-
Slow moving foams can feel restrictive

The Helix Midnight Luxe mattress is a luxury hybrid bed that's been crafted specifically for side sleepers. We've tested and re-tested the Luxe several times over the past two years and it continues to impress us with its soothing pressure relief across the shoulders, hips and knees. While it's the clear choice for the best luxury mattress for side sleepers, it's also incredibly comfortable and supportive for back sleepers too. We even rate it as one of the best mattresses for back pain you can buy.

While the Luxe performed well across all testing metrics, it scored an impressive 4.5 out of 5 for pressure relief. That means you can expect an even distribution of weight when lying on the Luxe, so you're unlikely to get a buildup of pressure along the touchpoints of the mattress (a common complaint for most people who sleep on their side). Its breathable build and Tencel cover means helps it keep temperatures cool, but there are also two cooling upgrades available for hot sleepers.

We gave the Luxe a score of 3.5 out of 5 for motion isolation, which is a respectable score and reflects that most movements will be dampened by the mattress. However, for restless sleepers looking for a hybrid mattress with even better motion isolation, we recommend the Saatva Classic (#1). The Classic is also more responsive, which means changing positions is easier.

The Helix Midnight Luxe is the best mattress for side sleepers we've ever tested, offering body cradling comfort that you sink slightly into. (If you're after something with even more sink-in support, we recommend the DreamCloud Ultra at #7). The best time to buy the Luxe is during major mattress sales, when there's typically 27% off. After a slight MSRP increase that brings a queen down to $1,824 from $2,498, which matches the biggest discount of 2026.

Best organic luxury mattress

A non-toxic and naturally breathable dual-sided latex mattress that eco-conscious couples will love

Specifications

Type: Latex
Height: 10"
Available sizes: 8
Price range: Premium
Best for: Hot sleepers, couples, eco-conscious shoppers
Who should avoid: Lighter weight side sleepers

Reasons to buy

+
Excellent edge support
+
Flippable mattress for dual firmness
+
Naturally breathable for a cool night’s rest
+
Made with organic materials and non-toxic
+
Exceptional motion isolation on the gentle firm side
+
White glove delivery service, one-year trial, and lifetime warranty

Reasons to avoid

-
Luxury plush side is firmer than expected
-
Motion isolation could be better on the luxury plush side

The Saatva Zenhaven is a dual-sided all-foam largely organic latex mattress, which means one side feels firmer than the other. It's breathable, naturally cooling and hypoallergenic, making it great for both hot sleepers and those with allergies. Like the Classic at #1, the Zenhaven is handcrafted in the US from natural latex, organic cotton and wool, making it the clear choice for our top organic luxury mattress pick.

The Zenhaven comes in two sleep feels; Luxury Plush and Gentle Firm, which means that you can flip the mattress for a firmer or softer feel as you see fit. However, our lead tester found that the Luxury Plush side was firmer than the 4/10 firmness that was advertised, placing it closer to 6.5/10. That medium-firm tension will suit most sleepers, but lighter weight side sleepers will likely prefer the softer Awara Classic Hybrid (check it out our #also-tested section below).

Support around the edge is excellent in both tensions, which means you can sleep right up to the side of the bed. Motion isolation, a term to describe how well in minimizes movement, could be better on the softer side. For an all-foam mattress with strong motion isolation, check out the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt at #7.

It's important to point out that the Zenhaven is not 100% organic. However, it does come eco-INSTITUT and GREENGUARD Gold certified, which means it's non-toxic, free from harmful substances, pollutants and emissions. Unsurprisingly for a mattress of this calibre, it commands a high price. It's currently $3,099 from $3,499 in the Saatva mattress sales after $400 off, which is a great saving. However, latex mattresses are incredibly durable (a well-cared for latex bed can last up to 20 years), so you know this is a mattress that's going to last.

Best cooling luxury mattress

Unbeatable cooling for very hot sleepers plus zoned lumbar support for back pain relief

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Height: 14"
Available sizes: 8
Price range: Premium
Best for: Hot sleepers, back pain
Who should avoid: Couples, those with mobility issues

Reasons to buy

+
Cushioning and supportive
+
Active cooling
+
Easy to move around on
+
Bouncy and responsive

Reasons to avoid

-
You'll feel your partner moving
-
Beaten by rivals on edge support

Out of the 130+ beds we've reviewed, the Bear Elite Hybrid is the best cooling mattress we've ever tested, making it a solid luxury choice for chronic hot sleepers or anyone whose sleep is blighted by night sweats. Especially as the cooling Celliant cover we tested and loved now comes as standard. Plus, like the Saatva Classic at #1, the Bear comes in three firmness options and zoned lumbar support for back pain relief.

However, the Bear Elite mattress falls short in two key areas; motion isolation and edge support. That means that couples who share a bed are likely to feel movement from their partner, which — depending on how light you sleep — could be disruptive. The support around the bed's edge was also disappointing, with the Bear essentially failing our lab tests (the edge wasn't strong enough for us to carry out our 25kg weight test).

Poor edge support means that you're unable to safely sleep right up to the bed's edge or sit before standing without feeling the mattress dip and collapse beneath you. If that — along with strong motion isolation — is important to you, we recommend either the Saatva Classic at #1, or the Brooklyn Bedding Thermobalance XL Elite in the #also-tested section below. Both of which provide excellent cooling and sturdy edges.

That said, the Bear is cheaper than the Saatva and the Thermobalance (roughly $400 and $1,000 respectively for the standard model). The best time to buy the Bear is during major mattress sales, like Black Friday or Memorial Day. That's when we tend to see 40% off with the code TOMS40, which brings the price of the Bear down to $1,370 (from $2,284) and often comes with free pillows and mattress protector.

Best tall luxury mattress

An indulgently tall and marshmallow-soft mattress you'll sink into without ever feeling unsupported

Specifications

Type: Hybrid
Height: 15"
Available sizes: 8
Price range: Premium
Best for: Side and back sleepers
Who should avoid: Stomach sleepers, combination sleepers who need to shift positions easily

Reasons to buy

+
Comfortable for side and back sleepers
+
Sensational pressure relief
+
Isolates motion well
+
Luxurious build

Reasons to avoid

-
Plush foams restrict movement
-
Cover feels slippery

The DreamCloud Ultra Hybrid is the brand's most luxurious mattress that looks and feels indulgent — and with a premium price tag to match. It's a lofty 15" tall bed that wouldn't look out of place in a 5-star hotel suit, making it the clear choice for the best tall luxury mattress. As well as its statuesque build, the Ultra is a marshmallow soft mattress that you'll sink right into without ever feeling unsupported.

Our lead tester described the Ultra as one of the softest and most luxurious mattress she'd ever tested, especially for those who sleep on their sides. However, it's surprisingly supportive and comfortable for back sleepers, too. It's endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), and is bolstered by a support system of a layer of 8" individually wrapped coils.

It performed pretty well across all key areas, including temperature regulation. Which, considering it boasts specialist cooling materials — such as Phase Change Material (PCM) to help keep hot sleepers cool — that's to be expected. While our thermal imaging testing showed a comparatively high Maximum Temperature Increase (MTI) of 9.6°F, it also showed a decent Cooling Rate (CR). That means that the PCM layer does its job: it draws in heat and then pushes it away.

For very hot sleepers looking for exceptional temperature regulation, consider the Bear Elite (#5). But keep in mind that while the Bear scored higher for temperature regulation, the Ultra performed far better for edge support (2.5/5 vs 3.5/5). If sleeping right up to the bed's edge or sitting before standing is as important to you as sleeping cool, the Saatva Classic (#1) is a better pick. But for a tall, indulgent mattress that's always discounted in a year-round DreamCloud mattress sale, we'd opt for the Ultra.

Best luxury mattress for back sleepers

World-renowned Tempur Material provides back-sleeping support and reduces joint pain

Specifications

Type: All foam
Height: 11"
Available sizes: 8
Price range: Premium
Best for: Back sleepers, couples, joint pain
Who should avoid it: Hot sleepers

Reasons to buy

+
Best for back sleepers
+
Incredible motion isolation
+
Loads of pressure relief
+
Free in-home setup

Reasons to avoid

-
Sleeps warm
-
Shorter trial plus return fee

A guide to the best luxury mattresses on the market would be incomplete without an offering from Tempur-Pedic, a brand synonymous with luxury. The Tempur-Adapt is our best luxury mattress for back sleepers, thanks to its soothing support when sleeping in the supine position. The brand's proprietary Tempur-Materials hold the spine in correct alignment, while providing soothing pressure relief along the joints and touch points of the bed.

As well as being superbly comfortable for back sleeping, our tests show that the Tempur-Adapt delivers outstanding motion isolation, too. This makes it a great choice for restless couples who don't want to wake up to their partner's movements. However, we were less impressed with its temperature regulation. (Back sleepers prone to sleeping hot will fare much better on the Saatva Zenhaven at #4, thanks to its naturally breathable materials).

During testing, we found its slow-moving foams hugged every contour of your body. But despite a certain amount of sinkage, it's still not quite plush enough for side sleepers (try the Helix Midnight Luxe at #3 for a hybrid alternative, or the DreamCloud Luxe for an all-foam alternative in our #also-tested section).

A queen size Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt is $2,099 (was $2,199) in the Tempur-Pedic mattress sales. That places it firmly in the premium price category. However, like the Saatva entries, you do get free White Glove Delivery, which includes the removal of your old bed.

How we test the best luxury mattress

Our mattress review process is editorially independent, which means that the mattresses included in our buying guides do so on merit and not due the influence of third parties.

To test our mattresses, we use both subjective and objective data collected by a panel of mattress experts and a 3-week long home-testing period. This data measures four key areas of a mattress’s performance: temperature regulation, motion isolation, pressure relief and edge support, to build up an overall picture of how comfortable, supportive and suitable a mattress is.

For each of these areas, we’ve developed a mattress testing methodology that produces quantifiable and repeatable results so we can compare the mattresses we test and provide recommendations for specific preferences, like identifying the best mattresses for side sleepers, and this guide: the best luxury mattresses.

Luxury mattresses aren’t just expensive beds. We believe a luxury mattress is any mattress that is made from high-quality materials, is well-crafted and provides an exceptional level of comfort and support.

To determine comfort and support, we measure pressure relief through a series of tests. In our Tom’s Guide Sleep Lab, we use a 25kg weight to measure the indentation this makes on a mattress after five minutes. 25kg is a third of the average adult’s body weight in America, so it’s a close representation of how a mattress would respond to distributed body weight. We also measure how long the mattress takes to return to its original height once the weight is removed — this shows us how easy it is to move around on the mattress and how quickly it adapts to different sleeping positions.

Tom's Guide mattress tester Lauren Jeffries lies on her side on the Saatva Classic mattress. We use our digital laser measure to trace a straight line down the centre of her back so that we can see instantly if there's any dipping that might cause her spine to move out of healthy alignment. The Saatva Classic excels at pressure relief and this strong support is one of the reasons why.

(Image credit: Tom's Guide, Future Plc)

Alongside this, in the Sleep Lab, our panel of testers lie in each sleeping position for 10 minutes. Using a laser, we measure spine alignment to assess whether the body remains in a neutral position. If the body is misaligned, this proves inadequate pressure relief and support and can lead to pain and strain on certain joints.

Subjective feedback is also important here. During the objective tests, we collect surveys based on how comfortable the testing panel found each sleeping position — noting any areas of their body that feel strained or not fully supported. Plus, over the 3-week home-testing period, the lead tester fills out a regular journal to document their experience and how the pressure relief feels once they have ‘broken the mattress in’.

Temperature regulation is also essential for luxury mattresses. If you’re waking up in a sweat, you’re not going to feel like you’re sleeping on a luxury bed — but more than that, a fluctuating temperature at night can cause you to wake up, disrupting the quality of your sleep. In our Sleep Lab, we use a thermal imagery camera that measures how much heat the mattress absorbs while someone is lying on it for 15 minutes. We then measure how quickly the mattress releases that heat once the tester has left the bed.

An image showing behind the scenes of our temperature regulation tests on the Saatva Classic mattress, with our tester lying on the mattress and our Managing Editor of Sleep, Claire Davies' iPhone attached to our thermal imaging camera to track the heat absorption and heat dissipation capabilities of the Saatva Classic over a period of 30 minutes.

(Image credit: Tom's Guide, Future Plc)

On top of this, our panel of testers describe how the bed feels beneath them to collate subjective data and feel the surface of the mattress to check whether it feels temperature neutral or not.

Couples looking for the best luxury mattress will need to consider both edge support (how supportive the bed feels around the perimeter of the mattress) and motion isolation (how much movement travels across the mattress). The better the edge support, the more spacious your bed feels. The better the motion isolation, the less disturbed your sleep will be.

To test edge support, we place a 25kg weight 3” in from the edge of the bed on the sides and the foot of the bed. We then measure how much this sinks. If it sinks far more than the middle of the bed, it won’t be supportive or stable enough for most people.

A Tom's Guide tester holds a 5kg slam ball over the DreamCloud Classic and then drops it, while an accelerometer on the other side of the mattress measures how much motion is absorbed

For motion isolation, we drop a 5kg slam ball onto the mattress and measure the impact it has on the other side of the bed using an accelerometer. The higher the impact, the less motion absorbed, meaning you’ll likely be disturbed by a restless partner’s movements.

After all of these objective and subjective tests, we score each mattress out of five for temperature regulation, motion isolation, edge support, pressure relief and value for money. The final score out of 25 determines how good the bed really is, and makes it easy for us to make quick comparisons and identify the best of the best.

Best luxury mattress FAQs

How much does a luxury mattress cost?

Why you can trust Tom's Guide Our writers and editors spend hours analyzing and reviewing products, services, and apps to help find what's best for you. Find out more about how we test, analyze, and rate.

There’s a lot to take into consideration before buying a luxury mattress, especially if you’re spending more money than you normally would. Before completing your purchase, think carefully about your current sleeping situation; do you (or anyone you share a bed with) suffer from any aches or pains upon waking? Do you find that you wake frequently during the night because you have overheated? Do you wake up every time your partner rolls over? Does the edge of your mattress dip and collapse if you sleep too near the edge?

Knowing what works (and irks) about your current sleep set-up will help narrow down what you are looking for in a new luxury mattress. Next, look for a mattress with a long free trial period (the Saatva, DreamCloud and Avocado Green all offer a 365 nights trial period) in order to test your mattress over a long period of time, to ensure that it is the right purchase for you.

Which mattresses do hotels use?

There’s no doubt that hotels use the most luxurious mattresses. What else could give that specific indulgent hotel sleep? The top hotels around the world use an array of mattresses. Usually, their picks have a medium-firm feel to suit all sleeping styles and they’ll be of exceptionally high quality to offer superior comfort and support time and time again, while remaining durable.

Our guide to the mattresses hotels use documents each major hotel chain and the beds they buy. But we also include a more affordable but still luxury option, so you can recreate hotel-quality at home. For example, The Westin Hotel uses the Westin Heavenly Bed, designed just for their hotels. But if you want to match the feel of this hotel, we recommend opting for the WinkBed.

Are luxury mattresses worth it?

While some luxury mattresses sit in the more mid-range price bracket, and some even classed as affordable, the majority will have a premium price tag to reflect the high quality materials and build. So, is it really worth investing in a luxury mattress?

We say, yes. If you’re going to invest in anything, your sleep should be a priority. A good mattress doesn’t just offer comfort, it also offers a good night’s sleep and support for your body, and both contribute to your overall wellness. Better sleep means better health. Alongside this, a luxury mattress has the potential to last double the lifespan of a budget mattress, meaning in the long-run, you’ll likely save money by investing slightly more in the beginning.

However, you don’t need to invest much. It’s important to always stick to what you can afford, which is why we’ve included a luxury mattress option for many different budgets.
