She was in a relationship with Ryan Bane, the American owner of the vessel and they had gone to a bar on an island in the US Virgin Islands on the evening of 7th March. His story is that she must have fallen overboard or gone for a swim and drowned while he was asleep. His reasons for not calling he coastguard was that he assumed the police would do that (although they counter claim that they told him to do so).
But something does not feel right. Dhondy has said: “Sarm's possessions including her passport, wallet and phone were still onboard the catamaran when she vanished. There are so many unanswered questions about her disappearance.”
On advice from his lawyer, Bane denied the coastguard a full forensic search and refused questioning by the police by invoking his U.S. Amendment rights but Sam's family and friends (and Dhondy) have not given up their search for the truth.

S01 E02: Dhondy meets with island police and is given CCTV footage that has never been released, showing Sarm’s last known movements with Ryan.

Did the police issue a description of Sarm Heslop?
They did. The police described her as a "5ft 8in Caucasian female of slim build. She has a bright coloured tattoo on her left shoulder featuring a seahorse, bird, butterfly and a pink flower." Unfortunately, they did not release CCTV footage of her and Bane making their way to the boat on the night she disappeared - this has been unearthed and will be shown by the BBC documentary for the first time on Wednesday, 17 September.
