Diego Lopes cut Alexander Volkanovski's right eye, his left eye and dropped him for good measure when they fought for the featherweight championship last April, but the punishment "The Great" absorbed only seemed to fuel his fire. Volkanovski's status as an all-time great is already locked in, but at 37, he's in a race against time to surpass, or even match, Jose Aldo's record of seven successful UFC featherweight title defenses. He's currently two shy, and this is the first defense of his second stint as champion, following a pair of defeats by Islam Makhachev at lightweight, and another by Ilia Topuria at featherweight.
While Volkanovski is composed, calculating and clinical, Lopes is a firebrand, and the 31-year-old was the first to admit that his trademark ferocity was his undoing last April. With a calmer head and clearer gameplan he could and probably should have put Volkanovski away. This time, surely, he'll have some method to go with the madness.

Emerging contender Benoit Saint Denis has the chance to score a major scalp against veteran fan-favorite Dan Hooker in their lightweight bout, while Sydney native Tai Tuivasa returns to the octagon after a 17-month layoff and five straight defeats to face 6'8" Tallison Teixeira in what feels like a make-or-break showdown.
