Jensen is known for his deeply personal films, with the “Gunnar Goes…” documentaries earning acclaim for their raw and honest portrayal of a man seeking for meaning in life. But “Portrait of a Confused Father” may be his most intimate piece yet, as what starts as a log of the relationship between a father and his son ends in a twisted tale of toxic masculinity, death and grief.

Throughout the documentary, we see how Jensen struggles to connect with his rebellious son as they navigate the teenage years, and how by 18, Jonathan has been indoctrinated into the world of hyper masculine social media influencers promising fame and fortune. At the age of 21, while living with a successful influencer in Brazil, Jonathan is attacked and killed. Just weeks before the documentary was due to be completed, it takes a turn Jensen could never have foreseen, and what should have been a celebratory conclusion becomes a period of grief and reconstruction.

Despite its heartbreaking conclusion, Jensen intends the film to primarily be a story about the love between father and son, struggles and all, however it also serves as a cautionary tale, with the film maker telling “Variety” how it highlights “how easy it is for a young man to get lost in today’s chaotic world with twisted ideas of how to succeed and become rich, promoted problematically by today’s gurus, coaches, influencers on the internet.”

A powerful and prescient look at modern masculinity, generational divides and familial love, Gunnar Hall Jensen’s moving documentary is a must-see, so read on to find out how to watch "Portrait of a Confused Father" online and from anywhere.
