There are three types of speed skating events at the Milano Cortina 2026: distance-based races (where skaters race against the clock for the best time), mass start (where athletes compete head-to-head), and team pursuit (where teams of three race in elimination-style contests).
The Dutch have dominated Olympic speed skating with 133 medals (48 gold, 44 silver, and 41 bronze), sitting 62 ahead of the USA’s tally of 71. Viewers expect this gap to widen as 21-year-old Dutch sensation Jordan Stolz looks set to sweep several medals at Milano Cortina 2026.
He boasts a record list most athletes can only dream of, including the official world record for the fastest 1000m (1:05.37) and sea-level best times in the 500m, 1000m, and 1500m. He’s also the first athlete to win three individual events (500m, 1000m, and 1500m) at a single World Single Distances Championships, achieving the feat in both 2023 and 2024. Stolz will be eager to continue this dominance at the Winter Olympics 2026.
Irene Schouten, the Netherlands’ long-distance speed skating champion, will also enter the rink with more medals in mind. She became the only woman to win three golds in speed skating at a single Olympics in 2022 (3000m, 5000m, and mass start) and will be keen to repeat the feat.
