The Puffy Cloud Mattress is a dream for back sleepers — and it's less than $1,000 for a queen-size

If you're a back sleeper who craves a firmer foam bed yet doesn't want to fork over a lot of money for a Tempur-Pedic, we suggest going to Puffy, where its entry-level Puffy Cloud Memory Foam Mattress is $949 for a queen-size. This is the brand's standard offer, but to sweeten the deal, Puffy is throwing in a couple of memory foam pillows plus a pair of light-blocking eye masks.

We slept on the Puffy Cloud for one month to see how it compares to our best mattress contenders. In addition to delivering excellent support for back sleepers, it also slept cooler than many other all-foam mattresses we've tried.

While we typically see this discount, that means that there is never a wrong time to invest in a Puffy mattress — especially since Tempur-Pedic is less generous with its mattress sales.

The Puffy Cloud is a 10" memory foam mattress with excellent medium-firm support for back sleepers. (We also recommend it for side sleepers who like a slightly firmer surface without much sinkage.) We also found out in our Puffy Cloud Mattress review that it doesn't retain as much heat as other all-foam models we've tested, and the motion isolation is top-tier (good news for bed-sharers). While we typically see this deal, it's still a great value for money — especially when you consider the freebies: two memory foam pillows and two light-blocking sleep masks. A queen-size is only $949. Plus, you'll get a 101-night sleep trial and lifetime warranty.

What type of mattress do back sleepers need?

Generally speaking, back sleepers do well with a mattress that balances softer comfort for the joints and lower back with sturdy support for the spine. A medium-firm mattress (such as the Puffy Cloud) is ideal, but everybody is different. If you're under 130lbs, a medium-plush mattress may be better.

The Puffy Cloud Memory Foam Mattress does not give that 'sink in' feeling that is characteristic of other all-foam mattresses. Even without it, our testers found that it offered enough cushioning around the joints to still be comfortable. (That said, it'll be hit-or-miss for side sleepers, depending on how much plush contouring they need for their joints.)

If you want something softer, try this...

Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress: twin now $549 at Nectar

Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress: twin now $549 at Nectar
This is our top-ranked memory foam mattress, earning 4.5 out of 5 stars in our Nectar Premier Memory Foam Mattress review. It's a tad softer than the Puffy Cloud and delivers more of a body-hugging sensation. (You'll benefit from stronger edge support here, too.) A permanent Nectar mattress sale keeps a queen-size at $949 — the same price as a Puffy Cloud — but it comes a full year's trial and a lifetime warranty, which are industry-best amenities.
