"Expedition Unknown" S16 sees Josh Gates conduct an audacious experiment at the Great Pyramid of Giza, brave crocodile-infested waters in Nicaragua in search of one of robber baron Cornelius Vanderbilt’s wrecked steamships (likely the Orus), and unpack the tale of Santo Cristo de Burgos, the 17th-century Spanish galleon that inspired "The Goonies".

Here's how to watch "Expedition Unknown" season 16 from anywhere with a VPN.

'Expedition Unknown' season 16 streams, release date

The TV equivalent of digging down a Wikipedia rabbit-hole — side note: did you know that Jeff Cohen, aka Chunk from "The Goonies" is now an attorney? — "Expedition Unknown" strikes a balance between reality, historiography and conjecture. Gates keeps things light and informative, and just about resists the temptation to go the full "Expedition X" with subject-matter that continues to fascinate precisely because it defies explanation.

Gates will also team up with Parker Schnabel of "Gold Rush" fame and take an icy dip in the Baltic Sea in pursuit of a lost Nazi submarine, but it's his Egyptian venture, spread across two parts, that's taking pride of place. It sees him deploy 3D scanning and crawl through pitch-black tunnels under the Great Pyramid, in an attempt to gain a better understanding of how it was built.

Season 16 is going big on shipwrecks too, with the Santo Cristo de Burgos (captained by Basque nobleman Don Bernardo Iniguez del Bayo y de Pradilla, rather than the pirate One-Eyed Willy) that met its end on the coast of Oregon around the late 1600s, and one of the railroad and shipping magnate Vanderbilt's many ill-fated vessels, some of which were repurposed by nature after running aground.
