"Betrayal" is ITV’s new four-part spy thriller, with Shaun Evans stepping out of his "Endeavour"-style comfort zone into something sharper and more domestic. He plays MI5 officer John Hughes, who is under internal investigation after an informant meeting turns fatal and then goes rogue to uncover what really happened.

Below, we’ll walk you through how to watch "Betrayal" from anywhere with a VPN, and how to stream it for free in the U.K.

‘Betrayal’: release date and time

"Betrayal" premieres on Sunday, 8 February 2026, at 9:00 PM on ITV1, with STV airing the episode in Scotland. From the premiere date, all four episodes will also be available to stream as a box set on ITVX and STV Player.

ITV is pitching "Betrayal" as a more grounded spin on the spy genre, shaped over several years by Shaun Evans, executive producer Tom Leggett, and writer David Eldridge. Instead of glamorous globe‑trotting, the focus is on the everyday reality of intelligence work — and how it collides with ordinary family life.

If you’re in the UK, the easiest way to watch is to tune into ITV1 (or STV in Scotland) when it airs, with the full box set available on ITVX and STV Player from the premiere date.

If you’re travelling, a VPN can help you securely access your usual UK streaming apps, so you don’t have to miss an episode just because you’re abroad.

Below, you’ll find the release schedule, where to stream "Betrayal" by region, and a quick guide to what to know before you start watching.

At the time of writing, there’s no confirmed U.S. release date or streaming home yet for ITV’s 2026 series "Betrayal", starring Shaun Evans.

Based on how ITV Studios usually sells its dramas overseas, it’s likely to arrive later on services such as BritBox, PBS Masterpiece, or other platforms that license ITV Studios shows, including Hulu, Prime Video, and AMC+.

One thing to watch out for: there are several older, unrelated shows and films also called "Betrayal" on services like Hulu and Disney+, so be sure you’re searching for the 2026 series, with Shaun Evans playing MI5 officer John Hughes.

If you already have a UK ITVX account and you’re travelling, you can use a VPN to keep watching securely from abroad. Tom’s Guide recommends NordVPN for this.

‘Betrayal’ FAQs

Is "Betrayal" based on a true story?

No. "Betrayal" is a fictional thriller written by playwright David Eldridge.

However, the production worked closely with Gordon Corera, the BBC’s former security correspondent, to ensure the “micro details” of modern MI5 life feel authentic on screen.

Where was it filmed?

The series was primarily filmed in Liverpool and Manchester. Key locations include Edge Hill train station, the Cat and Fiddle in Bootle, and the Caribbean Centre in Toxteth. Notably, "Betrayal" is the first TV production to be allowed to film outside MI5 headquarters at Millbank.
