After more than a decade of planning, arguably the most controversial World Cup in history has arrived. It’ll be host nation Qatar that gets the tournament underway, and they’ll be looking to make a splash on home soil. Qatar does have some international tournament pedigree. They were winners of the Asian Cup 2019 and semi-finals in the 2021 Gold Cup. Not to mention its domestic league has been paused since mid-September which has given the majority of its squad more preparation than most. The side’s key man is undoubtedly winger Akram Afif, who plays for Qatari club Al Sadd, but the country’s leading international goalscorer, Alomez Ali, is also sure to be vital to their campaign.

Ecuador are betting big on youth, with one of the youngest squads at the tournament. The hopes of the nation will rest on 21-year-old starlet Moisés Caicedo, who plays for Brighton in the Premier League. Ecuador’s qualification in this tournament came in controversial circumstances when they were accused by Peru and Chile of fielding an ineligible player. However, the Court of Arbitration for Sport eventually ruled in Ecuador’s favor. Ecuador last participated in World Cup 2014 where they failed to progress beyond the group stage, but they did reach the round of 16 in 2006, only to be knocked out by England.

There’s been much to discuss in the build-up to World Cup 2022 — many of those conversations uncomfortable — but now the talking will be done on the pitch. The Qatar vs Ecuador live stream signals the start of the biggest sporting competition in the world, and you won’t want to miss it.

Here's how they line up:

Qatar: Saad, Pedro, Bassam, Khoukhi, Abdelkarim, Homam, Al-Haydos, Karim, Aziz, Afif, Almoez.

Ecuador: Galindez, Preciado, Torres, Hincapie, Estupinan, Plata, Mendez, Caicedo, Ibarra, Valencia, Estrada.
