9. BlackBerry: VPN Connections and Malware
![]() | ![]() |
Like Windows Phone 7, BlackBerry doesn’t support simple VPN connections. To use a VPN connection, you must use a BlackBerry Enterprise Server. You might also consider using a third-party online service, too. For example, the SugarSync (free) app lets you access files from your computer(s) and also provides online backup, synchronization, and sharing features.
The BlackBerry OS uses code signing to contain viruses and malware. Additional protection can be provided via application control and IT policies when you use your phone with a BlackBerry Enterprise Server.
Like most other mobile operating systems, there isn’t a real issue with malware on the BlackBerry OS. With that in mind, there aren't many third-party anti-virus apps available. However, Lookout (free) and SmrtGuard Pro ($19.99 per 6 months) are apps that claim to help prevent malware infections and provide additional backup and security features. Junos Pulse , designed for enterprise deployments, also provides malware protection when used with their security suite and gateway.
