The Festival of Remembrance, a 90-minute concert held the night before Remembrance Sunday, is being hosted by Hannah Waddingham, and features performances from Rod Stewart, Blessing Offor, Sam Ryder, Keala Settle and The Wellermen. The Central Band of the RAF, The RAF Squadronaires, The King’s Colour Squadron and The Band of HM Royal Marines will also play military anthems at the show, which is being attended by King Charles and Queen Camilla, and will culminate with a two-minute silence and the release of poppy petals from the ceiling.
The National Service of Remembrance on Whitehall will feature a two-minute silence at 11 a.m. GMT on Sunday morning, a wreath-laying ceremony and a veterans march. Similar rituals will be observed up and down the country and around the world in former British colonies including India, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, which were central to the war efforts.
With populism thriving, rhetoric growing increasingly irresponsible and the old symbols of hope and unity being insidiously hijacked to stoke division, Remembrance Day serves as a powerful monument to the consequences of inflammatory politics. Listen hard, and they may just hear the echoes of the past.
