E3 Saxo Bank Classic 2026 Preview
With 16 cobbled climbs and a further four flat cobbled sectors, although the distance may be slightly less than the Tour of Flanders the route is no less arduous. Often pitched as a full dress rehearsal for the big day a week later, the E3 Saxo Bank Classic is, as the name states, now a Classic race itself.
Previously known as the E3 Harelbeke it's been on the calendar since 1958 and, starting and finishing in Harelbeke, will cover 208.5 kilometres and take the famous climbs of the Paterberg, the Oude Kruisberg and the dreaded Oude Kwaremont, twice (among others). This new addition to the route will see the riders joining the brutal climb at half distance the first time to tackle the final cobbles before taking on the full ascent the next time they arrive.
With no Tadej Pogačar, who is keeping his powder dry for the main event on April 7th, the role of favorite will go to Mathieu van der Poel who on paper should have no trouble taking his third win in three years. It's never a walk in the park to win a cobbled classic through, even for the greats, so expect the likes of Mads Pedersen, Biniam Girmay, Kasper Asgreen and Jonas Abrahamsen to push him right to the very end.
