The collective sigh released by both rivals and indeed team-mates once Tadej Pogačar decided after all to start this year's Vuelta could probably have been heard in space. Keen to fill a gap in his CV and seemingly not affected by his successful three-week jaunt around France he lines up at the race for the first time since 2019.
On one hand we get to see the best there has ever been tearing across Spain, up mountains and flat roads alike, but on the other we may be robbed of any sort of meaningful competition such is the Slovenian's dominance. The 27-year-old is seeking to become the fourth man in history to win the Tour de France-Vuelta double in the same season.
His rivals may not look much by comparison but they will be sure to give all they have in the hope that he is carrying fatigue from the Tour and they are led by the young Brit Oscar Onley. After a dire season the Netcompany Ineos rider will be keen to save his year and at least make the podium. This is where the real battle will be. with the likes of Richard Carapaz, Mattias Skjelmose, Felix Gall, four-time winner Primož Roglič and the perennial Spanish hope Enric Mas all fighting for those other two steps.
The race for the points jersey also looks like it could be a classic too with the great Wout van Aert fresh after having missed the Tour up against this year’s Green Jersey winner Mads Pedersen in a battle royale of the classics men.
This year’s course has a plethora of stages that will favor the breakaway so keep a keen an eye on exciting riders like Matthew Brennan, Jay Vine, Laurence Pithie, Jarno Widar, Thibau Nys, and the British duo of Max Poole and Paul Double mixing things up.
You’ll find a run down of the whole route in the preview below.

Vuelta a España 2026 Stage 1
This year’s race kicks off with a flat but technical 9km time trial around the streets of Monaco taking in much of the famous Formula 1 circuit. Hot favourite will be Pogacar as these are his home roads he will want to put on a show for the locals but special attention must be paid to young Josh Tarling. The Netcompany Ineos rider is taking the start in his favoured discipline just days after the tragic death of his younger brother Finn and would love to win as a tribute.

Vuelta a España 2026 Preview
Pogačar’s quest to complete the Grand Tour trilogy will kick off in Monaco with a testing 9.4km prologue before heading into France for a couple of hilly days, the second of which will feature the first summit finish of the race at Font Romeu. If Pogačar goes nuclear here that could be the Red Jersey sewn up but hopefully the gaps will be small enough to keep the others interested as the race heads for an incredibly short day in Andorra.
The 100km stage 4 packs in four mountains but does not have a summit finish so a whole host of riders could be in the mix then arriving in Spain on Stage 5 the route begins its progress south avoiding the entirety of the north and central areas of the country this year.
Stage 5 and 6 are both tough then stage 7 is even harder as it hosts the second summit finish of the race to Aramón Valdelinares. The sprinters will have to wait until stage 8 before they get a chance on the flat run to Xeraco which will give the GC riders a good day off before the killer stage 9 to Alto de Aitana to end week 1.
What will undoubtedly have already been a demanding race will welcome its first rest day and then a couple of steady stages before the stage 12 date with the climb to Calar Alto. This monster day also takes in the legendary Alto de Velefique passing through the scenery used as the backdrop for the Spaghetti Westerns.
Rest is hard to find on this year’s route as stage 13 is again very lumpy and stage 14 is yet another summit finish, this time finishing up the first category Sierra de Pandera followed by more mountains as the race makes it’s way to Cordoba and into the second rest day.
There’s an easy stage to begin the third week with what on paper looks like a 181 kilometres of downhill all the way to the coast then on Stage 17 the sprinters get their second and last chance, although there are still two big hills to cross on the way to Sevilla.
The organizers will be hoping all is still to play for as the race heads into its finale with a 32km time trial on stage 18 followed by a massive summit finish to Peñas Blancas on Stage 19 then another huge day of mountains, and yes another summit finish before the ceremonial final day around the city of Granada.

Simon Warren has been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France. Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. This resulted in his 2010’s best-selling 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs, followed to date by 14 more guides to vertical pain. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. He hosts talks, guides rides, has written columns for magazines and in 2020 released his first book of cycling routes, RIDE BRITAIN. Simon splits his time between working as a graphic designer and running his 100 Climbs brand and lives in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District with his wife and two children.
