It's a hybrid show with real-life historical figures played by actors, fictional characters and genuine archive footage in a reimagining of the world order since 1969 over, so the the producers have promised, the course of seven seasons.
In this 2012, humanity is in a much better place than actually seems to be the case today but there is tension between Earth and the colony ("Happy Valley") that has been settled on Mars to exploit mining opportunities.
But there is an "Earth First"-type motivation to stop spending money on the colony and an urge to take it under control while a growing desire for independence on the red planet foreshadows conflict. The tension plays out over ten episodes.

Where does the title "For All Mankind" come from?
The name is inspired by the lunar plaque left on the Moon by the crew of Apollo 11. It reads, “Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969, A.D. WE CAME IN PEACE FOR ALL MANKIND.”
