The onus is on Poland to turn a formality into a sensational twist. With the Netherlands leading Group G by three points above Jan Urban's men, Friday's clash at Stadion Narodowy in Warsaw could either see the Oranje secure automatic qualification with a round of 2026 World Cup Qualifying to spare, or Poland pull level to set up a grandstand finish.

The reverse fixture in September ended all-square at 1-1, but the scoreline didn't remotely reflect the game itself. It was shooting practice for the Dutch, who forced a host of saves from Lukasz Skorupski and hit the post through Tijjani Reijnders before Denzel Dumfries eventually made the breakthrough with a brilliant headed finish.

It was only after falling behind that Poland started to play, and they were rewarded with a late Matty Cash wonder-strike. In fairness to the Eagles, the fixture was Urban's first game in charge, following a period of real turbulence. Michal Probierz resigned in June, when Robert Lewandowski reacted to being stripped of the captaincy by going on strike.

Poland have won three of three since, but injuries to Skorupski and Marcin Bulka have created a goalkeeping crisis. With Wojciech Szczesny out of the international frame, Urban's options have just five caps between them. With Poland clear of third-placed Finland with a game in hand, however, they can afford to be bold and play on the front foot.
