The latest stage of AFC Qualifying is proving highly controversial. Six nations have already qualified, and the winners of a pair of three-team mini-leagues are set to join them imminently. Group A comprises Qatar, United Arab Emirates and Oman; Group B comprises Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Indonesia. They'll only play each other once.

However, every Group A game is being played in Qatar, and every Group B game in Saudi Arabia. No explanation has been provided for the choice of venues. Furthermore, both Qatar and Saudi Arabia will get five days of rest between their fixtures, whereas their opponents are being made to play twice in 72 hours. The two bottom-placed teams will be eliminated, while the two runners-up will face off for a place in the inter-confederation playoffs.

The mammoth CAF group stage is finally about to conclude, with the nine winners gaining automatic qualification and the four best runners-up set to battle for a single inter-confederation playoffs splot. Morocco and Tunisia are already through, while Mohamed Salah’s Egypt, Riyad Mahrez's Algeria and Mohammed Kudus' Ghana are on track. Senegal and Ivory Coast still have more to do, while Bryan Mbeumo's Cameroon are on the fringes. Victor Osimhen's Nigeria, however, are in dire straits.

UEFA Qualifying is in its infancy, although Alexander Isak's Sweden are already facing a steep uphill battle. Although UEFA look set to belatedly ban Israel from European competition, World Cup Qualifying falls under FIFA's jurisdiction. The governing body has aligned itself with the Donald Trump regime, which has indicated that it will grant Israel automatic qualification if it misses the cut.

CONCACAF Qualifying also has a long way to go, while the CONMEBOL and OFC sections are done and dusted until the inter-confederation playoffs next March.
