Luke Donald has gone with experience as he sets out to lead Europe to a first Ryder Cup victory on American soil since the Miracle of Medinah in 2012. Rasmus Hojgaard is the only rookie on the team, whereas Keegan Bradley has selected four in Ben Griffin, JJ Spaun, Russell Henley and Cameron Young.

With Europe heading to Bethpage Black as holders, they only require 14 points to retain the Ryder Cup. To win it back, USA need 14.5 points. That might ordinarily cast them as underdogs, despite the Scottie Scheffler factor and their strong home record, but in a highly controversial break with tradition, for the first time ever the US players are being paid — and handsomely at that.

It's precisely this issue that ignited the last Ryder Cup in Rome. Patrick Cantlay's refusal to wear the Team USA cap because he wasn't being paid provoked ridicule from the spectators, who removed their own caps in jest. However, Cantlay's caddie Joe LaCava then pointedly waved his cap close to Rory McIlroy as he was lining up a putt, sparking a row that spilled over from the course to the car park.
