For the vast majority of this long rivalry, there has been little to separate these two great rugby nations. There is no doubt that England head into this championship as genuine title contenders. Steve Borthwick’s side are on an 11-game winning run and are up to third in the world rankings. There’s also a nice balance to the squad, with young players such as Henry Pollock, Immanuel Feyi-Waboso and Guy Pepper bringing fresh energy alongside established names such as George Ford and Jamie George. The only negative heading into the game is that captain Maro Itoje will start on the bench, having only recently returned to the country following the death of his mother.
It’s been a tough time to be a Wales fan in recent years. They’ve lost 20 out of their last 22 internationals and have not won a Six Nations match since March 2023. Having gone winless in the last two tournaments and finished bottom of the table, the task for head coach Steve Tandy is simply to avoid a third consecutive Wooden Spoon. Gaining a victory in Twickenham will be a tall order, but there is at least some fresh optimism thanks to the return of winger Louis Rees-Zammit, who is back playing professional rugby following an 18-month stint in the NFL.
