I found a $79 mattress vacuum cleaner that shows you how many dust mites are lurking in your mattress, then kills them instantly — and it can even be used on pillows
The FEPPO cleaner reached deep into the layers within my mattress to lift fine dust particles and kill bacteria
Part of my job as a Sleep Editor is writing about mattress hygiene and testing gadgets than banish nasties from your bed, and the latest one to cross my desk is the FEPPO Mattress Vacuum Cleaner, which is currently down from $119 to $79 at Amazon.
I don't mind saying that I've become a little obsessed with this mattress cleaner. Not only does it detect dust mites in my mattress, it destroys them on sight.
I've been using the FEPPO mattress vac on my two year old mattress and have been stunned by how much dust and debris it's pulled from deep inside the layers of my bed. Here's how I've been using it to freshen up my mattress...
The FEPPO Mattress Vacuum Cleaner 4-in-1 handheld vacuum works by drawing fine dust, dust mites and unseen particles from deep inside your mattress. A multi HEPA filter system, UV light and 140° heat sterilizes the area and reduces humidity (which mold and dust mites love, by the way.) It's currently down to $79.99 at Amazon
Putting an end to dust mites and mold in my mattress
Dust mites thrive in dark, humid environments, feasting on your dead skin cells day and night. If left unchecked, dust mite populations rise rapidly and that can impact your sleep quality. Think streaming eyes, a congested nose and a cough keeping you awake at night.
I've been using the FEPPO vacuum on a two year old mattress. I always use a good mattress protector on my beds so I wasn't expecting to see much.
But I could see the cylinder chamber begin to slowly fill with a fine layer of dust. By the time I'd finished vacuuming my relatively new mattress, there was a substantial amount of debris inside the cleaner.
How it works
Through powerful suction, the FEPPO Mattress Vacuum Cleaner lifts dust, dust mites and other allergens from deep inside your bed.
Once on, a high-frequency vibration (that I could barely feel this in action) 'taps' the surface of the mattress through the vacuum. It dislodges dust, dust mites and other particles hiding in the layers of the mattress.
In terms of the dust mite detection percentage, which is shown via an LED display light, this was tricker to monitor. As I slowly ran the vacuum over the surface of the mattress, the percentage jumped anywhere from 0% to 100%.
Interestingly, the biggest jumps came when I ran the vacuum over the dips of the mattress tufts, where dust is more likely to collect. Then, it would fall back to 0% on other spots on my bed.
But where dust goes, dust mites follow. So it stands to reason that by sucking up dust, I was demolishing colonies of mites.
Let there be (UV) light
As well as vacuuming dust and other particles, the FEPPO sanitizes the surface of the mattress through the double pronged attack of heat and UV light.
The UV light, which only activates when in contact with a surface for safety, kills mattress mold spores and other bacteria.
The FEPPO vacuum also kicks out 140°F heat, which is hot enough to kill any dust mites it comes into contact with. This heat is also designed to reduce any moisture or humidity, which mold and dust mites are drawn to.
Once I'd vacuumed my mattress, which only took five or so minutes, I couldn't wait to have a go on my pillows. Seriously, someone needs to stop me.
Would I recommend the FEPPO Mattress Vacuum Cleaner? Yes, to anyone whose allergies stop them from sleeping as well as they could, along with my partners in grime who just get a kick out of seeing how much dust is in their mattress. Next up, the sofa!
