I reviewed a mattress that stopped me waking up at 3 a.m. with back pain when stomach sleeping — and it's back to this year's lowest price for Presidents' Day

As a stomach sleeper, I've slept on many mattresses that leave my spine crying out for support (and a heating pad.) That wasn't a problem when I tested the Helix Dawn Mattress, currently $972.36 for a queen (was $1,332) at Helix, a firm and bouncy bed that works with your body, not against it.

The Helix Dawn lifts and straightens my spine, stopping the painful 'sag' that happens on less supportive beds. And it can rival the best mattresses we've tested when it comes to all-round performance — it's strong at the edges and breathable.

Use code TOMS27 at checkout and enjoy 27% off in the Helix mattress sale, the best discount you'll get this Presidents' Day (the usual offer takes just 20% off.) At $972.36 for a queen (was $1,332) the Dawn delivers the support of a pricier bed and if you shop now you can justify a splurge on an upgrade — a queen with a cooling pillow top is still only $1,245.87.

Why the Helix Dawn is my top pick for stomach sleepers

Lying prone forces your back and neck into an uncomfortable angle, which is why stomach sleeping is widely considered the worst sleep position.

Unfortunately, it's a sleep habit I just can't kick, so when choosing a mattress my main concern is finding one that lessens the impact of stomach sleeping. This means I can drift off in my favorite position and wake up without a dull ache in my lower back.

The Helix Dawn mattress has two features that make it the best mattress for stomach sleepers I've tried.

First, it's firm. I rated the Dawn an 8 out of 10 on the mattress firmness scale, with 10 indicating rock hard.

Second, it's responsive. Helix uses latex-style foams to create a mattress with a slightly bouncy finish.

As a result, you lay on top of the mattress with even support from the head to the toes. That means your lumbar won't sink in, so your back is held straight, and you can avoid the usual back pain that afflicts stomach sleepers.

Stomach sleeping mattress alternatives

I've slept on all three of these mattresses and enjoyed high quality stomach sleeping support (and mornings without back pain.) Here's a pick for every budget...

Siena Signature (twin)
Affordable alternative
Siena Signature (twin): $179 at Siena

I'm currently sleeping on the Siena Signature Mattress and when I woke up this morning I felt fresh and ready to take on the day — even after a night of stomach sleeping. Like the Dawn the Siena is a firm mattress but the all-foam build means it lacks some bounce. It's also the best cheap mattress we've tested, with a queen just $359 (although keep an eye on Siena's Amazon store for a chance of a further discount.)

Plank Mattress (twin)
For firmer support
Plank Mattress (twin): was $749 now $524.30 at Plank Mattress

If it's a firm, flat support you want, you can't go wrong with our top-rated firm mattress. The Plank is a double-sided bed and the Extra Firm side is so sturdy you don't sink into it at all. It took me a minute to adjust in my Plank Firm Mattress review but by the end of the testing period, I was converted. And with 30% off in the Presidents' Day sale, a queen is $932.40 (was $1,332), the lowest price you'll get.

Helix Dusk Luxe (twin)
Luxury alternative
Helix Dusk Luxe (twin): was $1,436 now $1,048.28 at Helix Sleep

Thicker and more luxurious, the Helix Dusk Luxe mattress has a touch more cushioning than the Dawn but the same even support means stomach sleepers can enjoy indulgent comfort without the back pain of a softer bed. With code TOMS27 you can save 27%, reducing a queen to $1,751.03 (was $2,3998.) That's a competitive price for the best luxury mattress I've slept on.
