"IT: Welcome to Derry" is set in Maine in 1962 when Derry seemed to be just a regular picture postcard all-American town. A boy disappears just after the Hanlons - a couple and a young son - decide to move there and from that point it becomes a very different kind of place. Skarsgård had said he did not want to return to the movie franchise but was persuaded to put on his make-up once more to explore his character's early days by co-creator of this series Andy Muschietti who had already cast him in "IT" (2017) and "IT: Chapter Two" (2019) - which he directed.
It is likely the same team will make the next two scheduled seasons that are rumored to go even further back, to 1908 and 1935, in keeping with references in the original Stephen King novel "IT". For this first season, amid a backdrop of racial tension and social upheaval in early 60s America, more children disappear, the townspeople behave in a peculiar way and there is something very sinister going on around the sewers.
