Mattress protectors are essential for safeguarding your bed from spills and stains, but the crinkling noise of the waterproof thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) backing in cheap models can be off-putting. If you’re someone who has searched far and wide for a noiseless mattress protector with no luck, I recommend the Purple Waterproof Protector, now up to 20% off at Purple, which brings the price of a twin size down from $119 to $95.
Thanks to its superior performance in our multiple spill and dry tests, it was recently named best waterproof mattress protector in our guide. What caught my attention the most during the testing period was that it's completely noiseless; it's almost as if it's an invisible barrier, working silently to protect your bed and help it stay fresh and clean for longer.
Granted, it is one of the most expensive protectors we have tested, but right now, you get 20% off in the Labor Day mattress sales. And, the 10-year warranty and 30-day return policy definitely help sweeten the deal. So, let's check out the specs…
Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: twin standard depth was $119 now $95 at Purple
This waterproof offering from Purple is crafted from a polyester soft-knit top fabric backed by a completely noiseless TPU layer. It's soft-to-touch, lightweight, slightly stretchy and remains crinkle-free. During the one-week Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector review period, I found it to be 100% waterproof and stain-resistant. Compared to the others I've tested previously, the Purple proved to be a thin yet effective layer of protection, barely noticeable even on nights I shifted my position in bed due to summer heat — which is great news for restless sleepers. It comes in two depths, standard and deep pocket, and has a generous 10-year warranty, 30-night sleep trial and free shipping. The current 20% off deal is definitely worth taking advantage of, dropping the price of a queen size in the standard depth to $119 (was $149).
Need something more cooling? Try this instead...
While the Purple mattress protector didn't cause me to overheat (I'd say it was temperature neutral), it doesn't have any specific cooling credentials.
So if you're a hot sleeper, I'd advise investing in a model like the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector, tested and approved by Tom's Guide senior sleep writer Frances Daniels, who found it to be consistently cooling and cool-to-touch.
The high-tech PE fibers used in it (which are more commonly known by the name GlacioTex) are also hypoallergenic, which means this Brooklyn Bedding protector is adept at keeping away bacteria, dust and bed bugs.
While it may not be as thin and lightweight as the Purple Waterproof protector, we found it to be silent regardless of how much we moved around in bed. One drawback is that we noticed it can be somewhat slippery under sheets due to the silkiness of the material.
Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector: twin from $99 from $74.25 at Brooklyn Bedding
This protector earned a full 5 out of 5 score for its cooling capabilities in our review, largely thanks to the high tech PE fibers, which are made from 50% polyester and 50% polythene. We also found it was totally waterproof, despite being billed as water resistant. The honeycomb stitching creates a surface of soft hexagon shapes and it features "smart-design elastic" that allows you pop it on like a fitted sheet (it will also stretch to mattress depths up to 14", so should fit most beds). However, as mentioned above, one aspect where it fell short was slipperiness. Our tester found a flat sheet would slide off the top of the protector, and even with a fitted sheet, moving around in bed led to feeling the protector's slipperiness (read more in our full Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector review). However, it still provides great value cooling. And, right now, you can save up to 25% on this protector in Brooklyn Bedding's early Labor Day sale (with code LABORDAY25), dropping the price of a queen size from $129 to $96.75. This also includes 30-day returns, a 3-year warranty and free shipping.
