Tom's Guide Verdict

The Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector promises to be a 100% waterproof, stain-resistant and completely noiseless mattress protector. After sleeping on it for a week and subjecting it to a series of spill and dry tests, I can confirm that it lives up to its lofty claims of offering gold standard levels of protection. The lightweight thin build works well for restless sleepers, thanks to the crinkle-free noiseless design with soft top-knit cover. A twin size starts at $119, making it is one of the pricier protectors we've tested. However, its superior comfort and performance (not to mention sleep benefits that include 30-day returns, 10-year warranty and free shipping) make it a worthwhile investment.

Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: Review in brief

  • 100% waterproof and noiseless tested and approved
  • On the pricier side with a twin at $119
  • Not cooling enough for hot sleepers

Purple is a brand known for specialist mattresses and pillows made with their signature GelFlex grid layer for excellent cooling and pressure relief for all sleepers. The Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector is another popular product from the brand, which serves to protect your top rated mattress from liquid spills, stains and common allergens.

Made from a soft-knit lightweight fabric backed by the waterproof membrane, it is crinkle-free, noiseless and hypoallergenic — which is great news for sleepers who struggle with allergies and/or are prone to toss and turn during the night.

Unlike some other (often, cheaper) mattress protectors with waterproofing TPU backing, the Purple layer of waterproof protection feels like an invisible barrier. That's because both the comfortable soft knit top layer and waterproof backing have been melded together meticulously so you never feel it slip or slide beneath the sheets.

In order to gauge the effectiveness of the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector, I put it through several in-house tests. I also slept it on it for a week in different positions to asses the breathability and comfort.

I found it to sleep at a fairly neutral temperature. I personally didn't wake up hot at any point during testing, but very hot sleepers should consider opting for a cooling protector, such as the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling Mattress Protector, which boasts a cool-to-the-touch GlacioTex cover.

Very hot sleepers aside, after personally testing several of the best mattress protectors of 2025 I think the Purple is one of the thinnest, comfiest and easiest-to-care for.

To asses its waterproofing, I conducted multiple spill and wash tests, as I know firsthand that continuous washing can wear out the waterproof layer. The coffee and water I spilled never seeped into my mattress (phew) and the stain vanished just after a single wash.

In addition to these, I also examined user reviews on Amazon and Nordstorm to get an overall understanding of what other users think after longer-term use.

The Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector is available in seven sizes with a twin starting at $119. This also includes 30-night free returns, a 10-year warranty and free shipping.

Based on how it performed against the core parameters we take into consideration when testing a mattress protector, like ease of fit, waterproofing and breathability, I have awarded the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector an overall rating of 4.8 out of 5. Read on to find out more...

Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: Design & materials

  • The top knit cover is soft-to-touch and crinkle-free
  • It is lightweight and thinner than most protectors we've tested
  • The protector comes in both standard and deep-pocket versions

Purple has placed importance on both waterproofing and uninterrupted sleep while designing this protector. It features a polyester soft-knit top fabric, backed by a yet 100% waterproof thermoplastic polyurethane layer.

The top layer has a subtle sheen and is slightly stretchy, crinkle-free and completely noiseless, so you won't experience that scrunchy sound you get with some waterproof protectors.

It's also anti-microbial and hypoallergenic, making it a good choice for those with allergies and will keep you mattress fresher for longer. I also particularly love that the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector is available in two models: standard (all sizes) and deep-pocket (all sizes except twin and full).

The standard version can fit mattresses up to 15" inches, while the deep-pocketed design can be used on beds as tall as up to 20".

Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: Price & trial

  • Prices start from $119 and discounted during Purple sales
  • Expensive compared to other protectors with a similar spec
  • Comes with lengthy 10 year warranty

The Purple Waterproof mattress protector is available to buy in 7 different sizes starting from twin to Split king.

With a twin size at $119, it's one of the pricier options we have tested so far, especially considering that there are affordable models like the Utopia Bedding Bamboo mattress protector on the market, which starts from $12.99.

However, unlike the budget-friendly alternatives, the Purple Mattress Protector comes with a 30-day return period, 10-year warranty and free shipping. Plus you can also find it as part of the Purple mattress sales during major events, like the upcoming Labor Day mattress sales.

Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: Performance

We tested a queen size Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector by sleeping on it for a week, putting it through multiple spill and wash tests to gauge its performance. Here's what I found out...

Shipping

We received the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector within the 1-2 business days shipping period stated on their website. It arrived in a an easy-to-open plastic bag within a cardboard box.

Test score: 5 out of 5

Noise

The light-weight protector proved to be 100% noiseless throughout the one week I slept on it.

In fact, I almost forgot I had it on my mattress since the top soft-knit fabric and the waterproof backing was found to be completely crinkle-free and comfy, like an invisible protective barrier for your bed.

Ease of fit

The mattress protector was surprisingly lightweight, easy to unpack and popping it on my mattress proved to be a breeze. I chose for the standard skirt length to fit my mattress, but those with luxury tall mattresses should opt for the deeper skirt length (which fits mattresses up to 20" deep.)

The elasticated bands stretches well to completely envelop the bed on all sides and remained securely in place throughout the testing period. The skirt fabric reached all the way down to the mattress which meant it will prevent any common allergens getting into your bed, which is good news for anyone who prioritizes hygienic sleep, but especially those with allergies.

The top knit layer too can be stretched out and smoothened easily for a proper neat look.

Test score: 5 out of 5

Slipperiness

Unlike most cheaper waterproof options in the market with TPU backing, the Purple protector never slipped or slid during our testing period.

Once secured, it stayed in place all throughout. We never felt there was a second waterproof barrier at all.

Breathability

I slept on the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector during a typically erratic British summer, when nights didn't exceed around 68°F (20°C.) Despite its lack of cooling tech, I didn't experienced any overheating, nightsweats or discomfort when sleeping on it and found it slept at a neutral temperature.

However, if you're a hot sleeper, it is wise to invest in a dedicatedly cooling model, like the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling mattress protector.

Test score: 4 out of 5

Waterproofing

I'll be honest, I had my doubts about the waterproofing abilities of the Purple protector due to its very thin build (to the extent that the sponge pad and paper towel was visible beneath the protector.)

However, it proved to be 100% waterproof in my spill and wash tests. I placed a sponge pad and a paper towel beneath the protector before pouring both water and coffee separately.

During both instances, the paper towel and sponge pad remained dry and stain-free, indicating that the liquid was effectively contained by the protector.

I did notice that the liquid spread across the surface very quickly, even going beyond the spill-free zone, but my mattress remained dry and clean, thanks to the protector.

I washed the protector on a cold gentle cycle and later air-dried it while keeping a de-humidifier on. The coffee stain had entirely vanished, leaving no evidence of a spill happening at all.

Test score: 5 out of 5

Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: User reviews

  • Average online user rating for the protector is 4.6
  • Most customers agree that it's barely noticeable while being super comfy
  • Some were dissatisfied with its waterproofing properties

For gauging the user rating for the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector, I checked both the brand's official website and Amazon. The overall customer rating is 4.6 with mostly 4 and 5 star reviews on both sites. Most users echo my experience, saying that it proved be an invisible, comfy and waterproof barrier safeguarding the mattress.

On the other hand, some pointed out that the waterproofing was below par with heavier spills seeping through the thin protector. This doesn't align with my experience. However, prologued washing of a waterproof mattress can slowly erode its waterproofing barrier.

  • Purple user rating: 4.7/5 (105 reviews)
  • Amazon user rating: 4.5/5 (55 reviews)

Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: Cleaning & care

  • Machine-washable
  • Can tumble-dried on low heat
  • No need to be ironed since it's crinkle-free

If you're someone (like me) who hates the idea of a wet heavy mattress protector right out of the washing machine, you're in for a treat. The Purple mattress protector is much more lightweight compared to other TPU backed protectors I've used.

The brand recommends washing the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector on a gentle cold cycle. While it can also be tumble-dried (on low heat), I air-dried it, keeping a de-humidifier on.

Make sure to not use any harsh detergents or cleaning liquids as this can sometimes cause pilling. Not that I think you'll need to the coffee stain completely vanished after a cold wash.

However, it's best to avoid overloading your washing machine while popping in your protector which is a common bedding washing mistake, that can tamper with the process.

Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector: Should you buy?

Are you looking for a low-maintenance protector which is 100% waterproof, noiseless and lightweight? If so, the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector is a worthwhile investment.

I especially recommend it for sleepers prone to tossing and turning during sleep, thanks to its anti-crinkle soft-knit design. As well as being silent, it also acts as an invisible barrier, safeguarding your bed from all common allergens, spills and stains.

However, some customer reviews suggest that thin build is insufficient in holding heavier spills or stains. For that reason, it might be best avoided in a kid's bedroom, where heavier spills are to be expected.

Since we regard a mattress protector as an underrated bedding essential, our only other gripe against the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector is the cost, with a twin starting at $112. However, the 10-year warranty and 30-day returns sweetens the deal.

Buy the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector if...

You want a low maintenance waterproof protector: Our lead tester found this Purple protector to be 100% waterproof and stain resistant, based on the multiple spill and wash tests we subjected it to. The thinner build also made the washing and drying process much easier than usual.

You're a restless sleeper: Both our lead tester and online reviews underline the fact that the Purple mattress protector is 100% noiseless. The thinner crinkle-free build makes it barely noticeable beneath your sheets.

You want a mattress protector with a warranty: The Purple mattress protector comes with a generous 10-year warranty which is more than what we've seen so far (like the 3-year warranty for the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury cooling protector).

Don't buy the Purple Waterproof Mattress Protector if...

You're shopping on a tight budget: At $119 for a twin, the Purple Waterproof protector definitely falls in the upper range price category.

You're a hot sleeper: We found that it sleeps at a perfectly neutral temperature, which will be adequate for most sleepers. However, those prone to overheating or nightsweats should consider a cooling protector, like the Brooklyn Bedding Luxury Cooling or the Sijo Airyweight.

You're expecting heavier spills: Some customer reviews stated that liquid seeped through the protector during instances of heavier spills in a kids bedroom. In which case, you might be better off with something a bit more robust, like the Sijo mentioned above.
