The Amstel Gold Race – the only Classic held in the Netherlands – is the youngest of the Spring Classics, and was first contested in 1966. Together with La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, it is part of the iconic 'Ardennes Trilogy' — three races loved by the featherweight climbers after a punishing couple of months on the cobbles.

Amstel Gold Race 2026 Preview
The 60th edition of the Amstel Gold Race will take the peloton across 257 kilometres of relentlessly hilly Limburg countryside, tackling 33 punishing climbs from the start in Maastricht to the summit finish in Berg en Terblijt.
The almost 3400 meters of climbing includes vicious ascents such as the Gulperberg, the Kruisberg, the Eyserbosweg, the Geulhemmerberg and of course the world-famous Cauberg. One after another the hills arrive to hammer the legs of the riders with only the strongest left standing to contest the sprint finish.
With Tom Pidcock sidelined due to a serious knee injury he picked up at the Volta a Catalunya, the out-and-out favorite for the win is Remco Evenepoel, the two-time Olympic champion and the 2022 world champion. This is a race he would dearly like to add to his already glittering palmeres however, even in the absence of Pidcock he faces strong opposition.
His principle rivals will be Ben Healy, Giulio Ciccone, Brandon McNulty and of course last year's winner, Mattias Skjelmose, who took the win of his life last year beating both Tadej Pogačar and Evenepoel in the three-up sprint finish.

Simon Warren has been obsessed with cycling since the summer of 1989 after watching Greg Lemond battle Laurent Fignon in the Tour de France. Although not having what it took to beat the best, he found his forte was racing up hills and so began his fascination with steep roads. This resulted in his 2010’s best-selling 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs, followed to date by 14 more guides to vertical pain. Covering the British Isles, Belgium, France, Italy and Spain he has been riding and racing up hills and mountains for over 30 years now. He hosts talks, guides rides, has written columns for magazines and in 2020 released his first book of cycling routes, RIDE BRITAIN. Simon splits his time between working as a graphic designer and running his 100 Climbs brand and lives in Sheffield on the edge of the Peak District with his wife and two children.
