When David (Golo Euler, Philip Froissant) succumbs to cancer aged 49, his family and friends find comfort in the end of his suffering. Here's how to watch “The Last Settlement" online from anywhere with a VPN — and potentially for free.

Having earned producer Walter Iuzzolino's seal of approval, the German drama is airing internationally with English subtitles under the 'Walter Presents' banner, though it must be said that the six-parter's original title, "Am Ende – Die Macht der Kränkung" (translation: "In the end – The Power of Resentment"), is far less abstract.

David's posthumous outpouring of anger winds the clocks back on the lives of the various members of his inner circle, including his mother Rosa (Barbara Auer, Henriette Richter-Röhl), his younger sister Mirjam (Antonia Bill, Lilia Herrmann), his partner Julia (Angelina Häntsch, Luise Hart), and his best friend Roko (Mohamed Achour, Rojan Juan Barani).

Roko is haunted by a long-buried grievance with David's ex-girlfriend Aisha (Narges Rashidi, Gizem Emre), while a repentant Mirjam learns a harsh lesson about her family. For others, the brutal honesty of David's bombshell disclosure is all too much.

'The Last Settlement' — Need to Know

'The Last Settlement' episode guide

  • Episode 1 — David: At 49, David doesn’t want to die--but that doesn’t matter to the cancer that suddenly ravaged him. Tormented by the question of “why me?”, David concludes that it was years of hurt that made him ill and he hurls posthumous accusations.
  • Episode 2 — Mirjam: David's letter upsets his younger sister Mirjam. She is even more annoyed, though, that her sister-in-law Julia is lying to everyone. But when Mirjam tells the truth, she learns the hard lesson that the truth is not rewarded in her family.
  • Episode 3 — Roko: Roko is plagued by guilt for not visiting David shortly before his death. Was he a bad friend? Roko remembers when the pent-up conflicts between him, David and David’s girlfriend Aisha escalated and their world order began to crumble.
  • Episode 4 — Rosa: Her son's funeral is the most terrible day of Rosa's life, yet she tries to keep up appearances. But with Magda there, tensions rise between Rosa and Josef. When Rosa's smoldering anger ultimately explodes, though, it’s directed at David.
  • Episode 5 — Julia: Julia is devastated by David's death. When Aisha, David's ex-girlfriend, shows up at the funeral, her emotions spiral even further. Even 20 years ago, Aisha was a thorn in her side.
  • Episode 6 — Leon: Leon is notably absent from the funeral. Julia says he’s ill, but really Leon’s been out of touch since he left for South America. Upon his return, Leon wrestles anger and grief--until he saves a life that is closer to him than he realizes.
