It would certainly qualify as a 'toxic relationship' on today's terms but if "The Seduction" reinforces anything it is that it was the revolting nobility that led the revolting commoners to seek bloody revolution but that is only one way to view the series. There are lots of steamy sex scenes, naturally, but sexual politics is also a prism through which many people choose to view it.
Praising the intelligence of Merteuil, writer-director Jessica Palud, has shone the spotlight on Valmont's initial betrayal of her and how she then surpasses him "through a kind of proto-feminism." In essence, a woman in a time when women had no agency seeks revenge on the patriarchy by becoming the most desirable sex worker in Paris. Take your pick.

'The Seduction' - FAQ
Does this have anything to do with the 1988 film "Dangerous Liaisons" staring Glenn Close?
Only in so much as "The Seduction" TV mini-series and "Dangerous Liaisons" the major Hollywood release are both adapted from "Les Liaisons dangereuses", the 1782 novel by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos that predated the fall of the Ancien Régime in France. There have been over 20 major international film and TV adaptations of the book including the 1988 film but "The Seduction" claims to be 'inspired' rather than 'adapted'.
