"The House of the Spirits" story familiar to many millions of readers of Isabel Allende's 1982 novel of the same name ("La Casa de los Epiritus" in Spanish) were treated to a Hollywood film version in 1993. Focusing on three key female characters - Clara del Valle (the grandmother played by Nicole Wallace), Blanca Truebe (the daughter, Fernanda Urrejola) and Alba (the granddaughter, Rocío Hernández) - the epic historical drama takes in 50 years of the Trueba clan in a politically turbulent South American country.

The South American country is never formally revealed but do we know which one it is?
We're pretty sure we do. The author Isabel Allende was born in Lima, Peru where her father was working at the Chilean embassy in a diplomatic capacity (he was first cousin of Salvador Allende, president of Chile from 1970 until overthrown in a coup in 1973). However, these events and the dysfunctional and dangerous political situation portrayed have led most people to conclude that the unnamed country is indeed... Chile. Or based on actual events there so directly that it makes no difference.
