‘The Shallows’ (2016)

Mention the best shark movie to most people, and “Jaws” will usually top the list. It remains a benchmark that’s tough to surpass. That said, a small number of films still tap into a similar adrenaline-fuelled experience. “The Shallows” is one of them, unfolding on a quiet, remote beach where the open sea quickly becomes a source of constant tension.

“The Shallows” follows Nancy Adams (Blake Lively), a medical student who travels to a secluded Mexican beach seeking solitude and a connection to her late mother’s memories. While surfing alone, she is attacked by a great white shark and manages to reach a small rocky outcrop just offshore, only a short distance from safety. Injured and stranded, she is forced to survive with limited supplies as the shark patrols the surrounding waters.

‘Warrior’ (2011)

If you’re after an Oscar-nominated drama full of tension, “Warrior” is well worth adding to your list. It may not reshape the boxing genre, but Gavin O’Connor and his cast and crew craft a powerful sports drama that holds its own beside “Rocky.” A few predictable, slightly cheesy moments come with the territory, yet the performances and fight choreography keep it very compelling.

“Warrior” focuses on Tommy Conlon (Tom Hardy), a former Marine who returns to Pittsburgh after years away and reconnects with his estranged father. Tommy enters an MMA tournament with his father's help, aiming for the large cash prize. Meanwhile, Brendan Conlon (Joel Edgerton), a school teacher struggling financially and also trained in MMA, re-enters competitive fighting to support his family. As both brothers advance through the tournament, they remain unaware that they are on a collision course.

‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ (2019)

One title I hadn’t really heard of before is “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” a biographical drama based on a real Esquire article by Tom Junod that brings to life the setting of the Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood studio. Fred Rogers was an American TV host, producer, and Presbyterian minister who became a familiar figure to generations of viewers through his calm delivery and thoughtful storytelling.

“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” follows Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys), an investigative journalist known for his sceptical outlook, who is assigned to profile children’s television host Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) for a magazine feature. Initially approaching the assignment reluctantly, Lloyd begins interviewing Rogers and spending time observing his work and routines. As the interviews continue, Rogers invites Lloyd into his world, gradually drawing him into more personal conversations about his family and past.

‘La La Land’ (2016)

Damien Chazelle’s romantic musical drama “La La Land” is one of those comfort films I always come back to, and easily one of the most memorable movie musicals of recent years, especially if you’re in the mood for something sweeping and cinematic. The film has striking performances, colourful set pieces, and energetic musical sequences, gradually building toward a charming final act that won’t leave your mind.

“La La Land” follows Mia Dolan, an aspiring actress working as a barista in Los Angeles, and Sebastian Wilder, a jazz pianist struggling to find steady work. The two meet repeatedly around the city, gradually forming a connection while continuing to pursue their respective careers. As Mia attends auditions and Sebastian takes on various music gigs, they begin a relationship and support each other’s ambitions. Over time, career opportunities create distance between them.

‘Carrie’ (1976)

As a lifelong horror fan, “Carrie” has always been one of my go-to recommendations for anyone curious about the genre. Even people who don’t usually watch horror tend to recognize it, and with a Prime Video series adaptation potentially arriving later this year, it feels like the perfect time to revisit it. Alongside films like “Jaws,” it’s one of those rare cases where the adaptation arguably surpasses its source material.

Carrie White (Sissy Spacek)is a shy high school student who is frequently isolated and bullied by her classmates, while also living under the strict control of her deeply religious mother. After a humiliating incident in the school locker room, Carrie begins to notice strange occurrences around her. When she is unexpectedly invited to the senior prom by a popular classmate, she slowly starts to experience a brief sense of acceptance. However, a cruel prank is planned by her peers to embarrass her during the event.
