Based on the New York Times bestseller "Say Nothing: A True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland" but woven into something else entirely - a thriller with the jeopardy always real and still resonating down through the years.
On one level, the show is based around the stories of Gerry Adams (the former President of Sinn Fein), Jean McConville (the missing woman), IRA volunteer Dolours Price who was sent to jail for her role in the 1973 Old Bailey bombing, her sister Marian, and Brendan "The Dark" Hughes, a notorious high-level IRA commander.
On another, it has a powerful political message for today. The 1997 Good Friday Agreement paved the way for almost two decades of peace but the past has a way of demanding a second-hearing and some stories just refuse to go away.
Gerry Adams denies any involvement in the IRA to this day (see below for reaction to premiere of show in November 2024).

*SPOILER ALERT*
The 2024 series of "Say Nothing" portrayed Gerry Adams as a senior IRA commander and at the end of each episode there is the endnote "Gerry Adams has always denied being a member of the IRA or participating in any IRA-related violence" plus, at the end of episodes 7 to 9, "He further denies any involvement in the abduction of Jean McConville."
Episode 9 depicts the Marian Price character shooting Jean McConville. Price has denied any involvement in the event and another endnote adds, "Marian Price also denies any involvement in the murder of Jean McConville." In December 2024, Price initiated legal action against the makers of the show for the depiction and in July 2025 filed a claim against Disney in the Dublin High Court seeking damages and the removal of the offending scene.
Michael McConville (Jean's son) has said was "To make money out of [our mother's] murder and the pain that has been in our lives ever since is cruel and obscene. I doubt they even think of us as real people."
