Sophia's father Daniel Arguelles, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Manson, broke the news to her in 2022. He'd been brought up by his mother Darlene, who at the age of 17 had had a fling with a man she'd met at a bus station. Daniel was 10 years old when Manson was arrested for orchestrating the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969.
It was then that Darlene understood that the man who'd introduced himself to her as 'Charlie Dear' was in fact the cult leader who'd later claim to be the devil incarnate. She'd take the secret to her grave. However, Daniel uncovered the truth when a genealogy test matched him with Michael Brunner, one of several known sons of Manson.
It's fair to deduce that they took the news very differently. Whereas Daniel connected with Michael and embarked on a period of quiet self-reflection, Sophia spiraled, wholly convinced that she could go on to reflect her grandfather's image.
They fell out during the making of this film, which sees Sophia study Manson's traumatic upbringing, his mental health issues including schizophrenia and paranoid delusional disorder, and his sensationalist portrayal in the media.
