While some people love to sleep cuddled right up next to their partner, there are others who find that bed sharing is a constant struggle. Duvet hogs, different temperature preferences and sleep styles can make your bedroom feel less of a sleep sanctuary and more of a battle ground.

While the Scandinavian Sleep Method has been lauded as a solution to some of these sleep issues, there’s a couple of key areas that it falls short on (more on that below).

Instead, I present to you a shiny new sleep method on our radar in 2026; the German ‘Doppelbett’ Method. ‘Doppelbett’ translates to ‘double bed’ and involves using two twin beds on one bed frame.

So, what exactly is the German mattress hack and could it save you from sleep divorce? Let’s take a closer look.

What is the Scandinavian Sleep Method?

Before we dig into the German 'Doppelbett' Method, let’s first remind ourselves of what the Scandinavian Sleep Method is. The Scandinavian Sleep Method, also known as the two-duvet method, is when couples share a bed and mattress but use separate comforters or duvets.

It's already common practice in some Scandinavian countries, such as Norway, Denmark and Sweden. However, it's risen in popularity across the globe in recent years after gaining traction on social media platforms like TikTok.

The logic behind the method, and why so many couples use it, is that each person can choose a comforter or duvet that suits their specific comfort requirement. For example, if one person sleeps hot while the other likes to be buried under heavy blankets all year-round, you can opt for bedding that works for you.

The other benefit of using separate duvets or comforters is that you're less likely to be disturbed by your partner shifting around and taking the blanket with them. Bye-bye duvet wars, hello restful sleep.

Sleep Features Editor Lauren Jeffries tried the Scandi Sleep Method with her husband and has vowed never to go back, crediting it with being able to stay comfortable all night long.

What is the German ‘Doppelbett’ Method?

The German 'Doppelbett' Method shares many similarities with the Scandinavian Sleep Method; you each have your own duvet or comforter. However, the German method goes one step further and also involves couples sleeping on two separate mattresses.

'Doppelbett' translates to 'double bed', meaning two mattresses. In this case, the two mattresses are placed on the same bed frame. That means you can still experience the intimacy of sharing a bed, while opting for a mattress and bedding type that is specific to your sleep needs.

Why is the German mattress hack better for couples?

The German mattress hack solves two big problems that the Scandinavian Sleep Method can't. First, sleeping on two separate mattresses means that there will be zero motion transfer across the surface of the bed when each of you shift around during at night.

As well benefiting restless bed sharers, this feature is great for couples who operate on conflicting sleep schedules. If one of you heads to bed later than the other, you're unlikely to be disturbed by them getting comfortable.

Secondly, sleeping on two separate beds means you can each invest in the best mattress for your own specific sleep needs. So, if you favor a plusher mattress but your partner prefers a firm, you won't have to compromise.

How to set your bed up for the German 'Doppelbett' Method

Before adopting the German 'Doppelbett' Method, there's a few things you need to invest in first:

First up, you need two Twin XL mattresses

The key feature of this German mattress hack is sleeping on two separate beds, so let's start there.

King bed frames are designed to fit a mattress measuring 76x80", so you'll need to buy two twin XL mattresses which, measuring 38x80", are slightly longer than standard twin mattresses. (Check out our guide to how mattresses sizes compare for more options).

Alternatively, you can opt for a split king mattress. A split king mattress is, essentially, just two twin XL mattresses. However, some mattress brands, like Saatva, Tempur-Pedic and Nectar, sell them as a split king package.

Depending on the mattress you buy and whether it comes with customizable firmness options, buying a split king could mean that you forgo the option to buy the mattress that works for both of your sleep preferences.

However, buying a split king and king bed frame bundle in one purchase often means you do stand to save more money.

Next, you need a king bed frame

Placing your two separate mattresses on the same bed frame enables couples to opt for a set-up that works for them, while retaining the intimacy of sharing a bed. So, unless you're sleeping on one already, you'll need a king bed frame too.

While a king bed frame is a big investment, the good news here is that sleeping on two separate twin XL mattresses unlocks a potential new dimension to your sleep set up: adjustable bed frames.

Not all mattresses are compatible with adjustable bed frames, but the majority of modern mattresses are. An adjustable bed frame enables you to modify your sleep position in line with your own specific comfort needs, and could help you sleep even better next to your partner.

For example, if snoring is stopping you from sleeping, an elevated sleep position can help. Or, if back pain is an issue, a zero gravity sleep position, where your head and feet are both slightly elevated, helps relieve pressure on the spine and joints.

You certainly don't have to buy an adjustable bed base when adopting the German mattress hack, but it's worth considering.

Don't forget the separate bedding

Of course, like the Scandinavian Sleep Method, separate bedding is a key characteristic of the German 'Doppelbett' Method. So, if you don't have a set handy already, it's time to invest in two separate twin XL bedding sets.

Start with investing in the best pillow for your sleep needs, then think about bedding. The allure here is that you can choose the bedding type, tog and feel that you like.

Our handy guide to the best bed sheets feature an array of options for all sleepers and budgets, from hot sleepers to those with allergies. Our advice is to think about what it is about your current bedding that stops you from sleeping as well as you could, and start there.

Aesthetically, you might want to place a king size blanket or bedspread over the top of bed during the day just to give it a sense of cohesion, but that's entirely up to you.

And with that, gute nacht!
