Sprint Jacks Up the Cost of 3G Data Plans by $10

If you're thinking about signing up for a smartphone plan with data on Sprint, you may want to make that decision before the end of the month, as the third largest U.S. mobile carrier today announced that it will be implementing a $10 per month "Premium Data add-on charge" to activations of smartphones beginning January 30.

Sprint said in a press release that the charge will assist the company in "offering simple and affordable unlimited plans for its customers while maintaining a wireless network able to meet the growing appetite for a richer mobile experience."

The main reason behind this move is to protect the company's bottom line, as it forecasts a continuing growth in data consumption.

Bob H. Johnson, president of Sprint's consumer business, explained the move, "While some of our competitors impose overage charges and complex plans, Sprint continues to provide a worry-free, unlimited data experience while on the Sprint network. This is responsible, sustainable and reflects our commitment to simplicity and value."
