The Saatva Classic is an excellent mattress for seniors thanks to this one feature — and it’s $400 off for Black Friday

My mom doesn't exactly need an excuse to sleep in, but on a mattress with poor edge support, getting out of bed becomes a chore. As a mattress tester, I always recommend she invests in the Saatva Classic, now $400 off at Saatva, for a bed that exemplifies edge support.

Due to her bad knees (a combination of age and osteoarthritis), my mom needs her mattress to lend a hand when she's getting up in the morning. Good edge support means she can put her weight on the mattress, taking the pressure off her joints for a more comfortable start to the day.

High-denisity foam 'rails' placed around the perimeter of the Classic give a boost of strength that withstood even our heaviest weights, earning it high marks for edge support in our Saatva Classic Mattress review. You can exert serious force on the side and it won't collapse, meaning the mattress can shoulder the strain when you're getting in and out of bed. Sold in three firmness levels, ensuring there's a feel for almost every sleep style, the targeted lumbar support can also help reduce aches and pains. In the Saatva Black Friday sales there's $400 off all sizes, reducing a queen to $1,739 (was $2,139.) Based on previous Saatva sales, that's the lowest we think it will go this Black Friday. And free white glove delivery is included, so you don't have to get a heavy mattress up the stairs.

What is edge support and why does it matter?

Edge support can often be on the peripheral when mattress shopping (almost literally) but if you've ever felt a sinking sensation when sitting on the side of your bed, you'll understand the importance of this feature.

Strong edges have three big benefits. First, they increase the usable sleep surface by enabling you to sleep right up to the side, offering more room for bed sharers.

Second, sturdy edges allow you to sit on the side of the bed without sliding off. (For my mom, this is particularly useful when putting her socks on.)

Third, because they're a stable base to push against, strong edges provide assistance when getting in and out of bed. As my mom's knees can't be relied on early in the morning, this helping hand is appreciated.

A mattress with weak edge support is softer at the sides and as a result, collapses under pressure. When you push down, you might find yourself sinking further into the mattress than you anticipated.

The best hybrid mattresses typically deliver superior edge support overall but some of our favorite memory foam mattress have strong sides (the Plank Firm mattress stands out.)

But of all the mattresses we've tested (over 120), it's the Saatva that impressed us most with its side support. This is our top pick if you want a mattress with edges you can park a truck on.
