I've tested the Helix Midnight Luxe twice and was blown away by its support for side sleepers both times — but there’s a different reason I recommend this luxury hybrid

If you're a side sleeper looking for a mattress that offers phenomenal comfort and support, there's a luxury hybrid that stands out for me. The Helix Midnight Luxe, which has dropped to $1,751 for a queen from $2,398 at Helix, is the one I always recommend.

As a team we've tested over 120+ beds in our quest to collate our guide to the best mattress for all budgets and sleepers — and the Helix Midnight Luxe is the one we recommend specifically for side sleepers.

Soothing lumbar support that banished my back pain

As a mattress tester and someone who sleeps predominantly on her side, I know the hallmark of the best mattresses for side sleepers is plenty of pressure relief for my hips, shoulders and knees.

However, as someone who has also experienced recurrent lower back pain for over a decade, a mattress that holds my spine in correct alignment with the rest of my body is a non-negotiable. Anything that causes my spine to sink leaves me waking up in pain.

Finding a mattress that provides both body-cradling comfort and soothing lumbar support is harder than you think. Enter: the Helix Midnight Luxe.

After testing the Helix Midnight Luxe twice and sleeping on it on and off for the best part of two years, the Luxe is the best mattress for back pain I've personally tested. While the plush pillow top cover provides the cloud-like support my hips and shoulders crave, zoned lumbar support lifts and cradles the 'S' shape of my back.

While finding a comfortable position during a back pain flare up can be an uphill struggle when sleeping on other mattresses, lying on the Luxe feels like one long exhale. My back is blissfully supported and I feel weightless on the bed.

The mattress I'd buy with a smaller budget...

For me, part of the appeal of the Luxe is its luxuriously tall 13.5" build, a plush pillow top cover and zoned lumbar support for back pain relief. At $1,751 for a queen, this luxury mattress comes with a premium price tag.

If you're shopping for a hybrid mattress with a smaller budget, the Brooklyn Bedding Copperflex Pro is one that I'd consider instead.

It comes with zoned lumbar support, specialist cooling features for hot sleepers, a breathable hybrid design, and (according to our Brooklyn Bedding Copperflex Pro review) ample pressure relief for side sleepers.

Excluding an ultra rare 32% off flash sale for Labor Day last year, 30% off is the best Brooklyn Bedding mattress sale you can expect. That brings the Copperflex Pro, a mid-range cooling hybrid mattress, down to under $1,000.
