The new academic year is not far off, and as students around the country prepare to move into their dorm rooms, a new trend has emerged. Instead of simple rooms featuring cheap pillows, scratchy sheets and basic mattress setups, many students are instead opting for elaborately designed dorm spaces that include luxury bedding.

On TikTok, one recent report discovered, you can find parents who are spending thousands of dollars on customized bedding and more for their kids' dorm rooms — some even splashing out on the best mattress toppers costing more than $400. As a bedding tester, I’m all in for trends which prioritize hotel-quality sleep, but I also know that you don't have to spend a fortune on bedding to sleep comfortably.

To help you upgrade your dorm room without breaking the bank, I've rounded up my top recommendations for under $120 (for twin XL and standard, the typical dorm room sizes). Plus, you can always explore our back to school mattress and sleep deals or, if you want a whole new mattress, the expert-approved Labor Day mattress sales we've found. But first, scroll down to see my top luxury bedding dupes…
