A non-toxic mattress that is both supportive and cushioning for side sleepers

The Birch Luxe is a luxury hybrid mattress comprising of nine sumptuous layers of coils, latex, wool and cotton. Birch is the organic extension of Helix, the brand behind some of the best mattresses of 2026. So before testing the Luxe, we were expecting a high calibre of comfort — and it didn't disappoint.

"I think it’s a great all-rounder that combines subtle cushioning with robust support to create a surface that’ll suit most sleepers," lead tester Lauren Jeffries writes in her Birch Luxe Natural Mattress review.

However, as a side sleeper who requires a bit of sink-in support around her shoulders, hips and knees while sleeping, Lauren admits she was initially apprehensive about swapping from a plush memory foam mattress to a latex bed.

That's because latex is naturally derived from rubber plants and is denser than memory foam, often resulting in a firmer feel. But despite her reservations, Lauren says she was immediately comfortable when lying on her side.

"I think this was thanks to the pillow-top made from organic cotton and wool, which adds a subtle layer of cushioning," she says.

I never really knew what people meant by 'clean' sleep until I tried the Birch Luxe

Lauren went from sleeping on a memory foam mattress to the Birch Luxe, and says she's unlikely to ever make the switch back.

"I never really knew what people meant when they said organic mattresses give you a ‘clean’ sleep, but it started to make sense after sleeping on the Birch Luxe," says Lauren.

And that became apparent during the unboxing. Most mattresses in a box that have been compressed, rolled and packaged up for delivery emit a slight chemical smell when inflating. That's called off-gassing, and can be particularly strong in man-made fibers, like memory foam.

However, our testing team detected zero off gassing when unboxing the Birch, because the materials used are certified organic latex, wool and cotton and are all-natural.

It's those organic materials that also make the Birch Luxe naturally cooling, moisture wicking, hypoallergenic and durable (latex mattresses can last upwards of 15 years if well looked after).

"I enjoyed knowing I was sleeping on something that was completely natural; no harsh chemicals to breathe in at night, just latex, wool and cotton," concludes Lauren.
