Awara, Zenhaven, Avocado, PlushBeds — the 'Big 4' organic mattresses are still on sale and this is the one I'd buy
Starting from $799 for a queen in the extended Memorial Day sales, there's still time to invest in clean sleep
Organic mattresses promise clean, non-toxic, cool sleep. However, they do usually come at a premium price, which is why holiday sale events like Memorial Day a great time to invest. The good news is that the 'big four' organic mattresses are on sale, including a queen Avocado Green mattress down to $2,039 at Avocado, down from $2,399.
The best organic mattresses use natural, high-quality materials like wool, latex, bamboo and cotton. These are all breathable, moisture wicking and temperature regulating, making organic beds fantastic for beating hot summer nights.
The extended Memorial Day mattress sales bring down the price of four of the top organic mattresses: Awara, Zenhaven, Avocado and PlushBeds. But which should you invest in? Here's what I recommend after our team's thorough testing....

The Avocado Green mattress is one of the best hybrid mattresses online, made from layers of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex, organic wool and organic cotton. It has a medium feel which is surprisingly firm, but also can be bought in a 'Plush' softer version and a 'Firm' version to suit all sleepers. The 15% off Avocado mattress sale is a discount saved for big sales events, and it brings the price of a queen down to $2,039 (was $2,399). You'll also get a 1-year trial, 25-year warranty and free shipping.
This mid-range organic mattress is an anomaly because of its price. Made with the same high-quality materials as the Avocado, and sharing a similar hybrid design, you'll pay a fraction of the price. It has a medium-feel that supports most sleeping positions, but heavier-weight sleepers might want a firmer feel. While it's not currently discounted, the normal price of a queen Awara Classic at $799 is exceptional value and rivals the much more premium-priced beds. Plus you'll still get great perks, like a forever warranty, 365-night sleep trial and free shipping and returns.
The most premium of the four, the Saatva Zenhaven is a mattress with an all-latex core. You won't find springs and coils like in the Awara and Avocado beds. It has a dual-sided feature, which means you can flip the mattress to experience a different firmness. Following our links, you can get $400 off the Zenhaven in the Saatva Memorial Day sale, bringing the price of a queen down to $3,099 (was $3,499), and you'll get free white glove delivery, a 365-night sleep trial and a forever warranty.
This PlushBeds mattress is as luxurious as they come, with six layers of wool, cotton and latex. It delivers exceptional pressure relief and supports back, side and stomach sleeping. With an MSRP of $3,449 for a queen, it's a big investment, but the current sale takes $1,500 off the mattress, bringing the price down to $1,949. You'll also get free white glove delivery, a 365-night sleep trial and a forever warranty.
Why I recommend the Awara Classic to everyone I know
Not everyone has thousands of dollars to spend on an organic mattress, but it turns out, you don't need to. Despite the expense of sourcing natural, organic materials, the Awara has managed to keep the Classic well within the mid-range price bracket.
When I slept on the Awara Classic for three weeks, I was amazed at how comfortable and supportive it was. I had previously slept on the Birch Luxe Natural mattress, which costs $1,968 for a queen, so I wasn't expecting much from a mattress that's only $799 for a queen.
But for the price, it's fantastic. It has a medium feel but is softer than I'd expected. However, you don't sink into the bed, you remain sleeping on top of the mattress, meaning your spine stays aligned. Because of this balance of support and comfort, it suits pretty much every sleeping position. I even woke up sleeping comfortably on my stomach a few times.
It also keeps temperatures down. The wool and bamboo cover wicks moisture, meaning I've never woken up hot and stuffy on it.
The only downsides are that it doesn't isolate motion, so you'll feel your partner's movements. But, I actually haven't been disturbed by my husband rolling over once. Plus, heavier-bodied sleepers might not find it supportive enough because of the softer feel. Consider shopping the best mattresses for heavy people instead.
But in general, it's fantastic value for money. With perks that rival some of the best in the industry, like a forever warranty and year-long trial, you can't go far wrong with the Awara Classic.
