Rather than focusing only on the spectacle of the theft, "Skyking" digs deeper into Russell’s mental state and the unseen struggles behind the headlines, exploring themes of isolation, working-class pressure, and mental health in modern America.

Beautifully directed by Emmy winner Patricia E. Gillespie, the result is a tense and unsettling portrait of a life that briefly captured global attention. It's darkly humorous too; at one point while flying the stolen Horizon Air Q400, Russell casually attempts a barrel roll.

Who is the real "Skyking"?

Richard 'Beebo' Russell was 28-year-old ground service agent who stole a passenger plane in August 2018. He successfully flew it for ~70 minutes before crashing. He is featured in the 2026 Hulu doc "Skyking".

Deep dive: Russell, who worked for Horizon Air (owned by Alaska Air) in Seattle, stole a turboprop aircraft from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and flew it for over an hour without authorization. During the flight, he spoke calmly with air traffic control, even joking with them about attempting a barrel roll. The incident ended when the plane crashed on Ketron Island, killing him. Russell had no formal pilot training, and investigators found no links to terrorism. His story sparked discussions about mental health, aviation security, and how media and the public interpret such tragic events.

Who is behind the "Skyking" doc?

"Skyking" was made by Emmy-winning director Patricia E. Gillespie in conjunction with ABC News Studios.
