Why I recommend the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid for back sleepers

I've been sleeping on the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress for the past month, and I also invited a diverse panel of sleepers to nap on it to help me determine who'd benefit most from this entry-level luxury bed.

I'm naturally a side sleeper, and while I wasn't uncomfortable on this hybrid mattress, I did wish the foams offered more contouring for my shoulders, hips, and knees in that position. I also found myself missing my previous pillow-top mattress, which featured extra cushioning for my joints.

My fellow testers were in agreement; they just couldn't get comfortable on their sides with this mattress, albeit for different reasons.

One of the side sleepers in my group, who weighs over 150lbs, said, "I felt like I was kind of falling into the mattress rather than molding to it. Things were starting to get stiff at the hips and the spine.” Meanwhile, the side sleepers under 135lbs thought it was too firm, with little give for the pressure points.

But when we switched onto our backs? It was a whole different story.

Regardless of size and typical sleep style, all of us rated it an excellent mattress for back sleepers. We thought it had the right amount of tension to distribute our weight evenly, and the patented Lumbar Zone provided us with the support we needed to stay aligned.

“It supported my back when I lay straight back, and I only had the single pillow propped up slightly. Normally, I use like four or five giant pillows [at night]," said one of my back sleeping testers who weighs over 150lbs.

The Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid is like an elevated innerspring mattress, with plenty of pushback from the wrapped coils and minimal contouring from the comfort foam layer. It creates a lifted sensation that makes you feel like you're just floating above the surface — total bliss for back sleeping.

If you need a side sleeper mattress, consider paying a little extra for the Saatva Classic in Soft or Luxury Firm for extra pressure relief from its pillowy Euro Top. Per usual, you'll also find the dedicated Lumbar Zone to help with alignment — and you can even choose the height you want (11.5 or 14.5 inches). After $400 off, a queen size Saatva Classic is on sale for $1,779 (was $2,199).
