Saatva Classic vs Siena Signature: Should you buy a luxury or budget mattress this Cyber Monday?

In this Saatva Classic vs Siena Signature mattress comparison we're exploring support, comfort and performance to see what you really get for your money. Should you invest or save in the Cyber Monday mattress deals?

Saatva Classic vs Siena Signature: Price

There's no point beating about the bush: a queen size Siena mattress is roughly one-seventh the price of the Saatva Classic mattress in the sales.

You'll need to head to Amazon to nab this bargain on the Siena, where a queen is currently $244 (the lowest price we've ever seen.) In the standard Siena mattress sale a queen is $349 which, frankly, is a bargain anyway. And you get a 180-night sleep trial and 10-year warranty, better then usual benefits for even the best cheap mattresses.

In comparison, the Saatva Classic mattress is $1,739 for a queen in the Saatva Cyber Monday sale (was $2,139.) That's the lowest price we've seen in months.

Contrasted with the Siena, the Saatva price seems particularly high. But put it in the context of the best luxury mattresses, and you start to see the value: competitors WinkBed and Helix Midnight Luxe are both $1,799 for a queen this Cyber Monday.

And while the Siena has good benefits for a cheap mattress, Saatva's benefits are simply the best all-round: a 365-night trial (double the Siena), lifetime warranty and free White Glove Delivery (a perk that can cost upwards of $199.)

Saatva Classic vs Siena Signature: Materials & Design

The Saatva Classic is a luxury hybrid innerspring that features dual coil layers, an organic cotton pillowtop, foam railings and Saatva's patented Lumbar Zone Active Spinal Wire for added back support.

Oh, and two heights (11.5 inches, 14.5 inches) and three feels (Plush, Luxury Firm, Firm) are available.

The Siena's design is much simpler. but that's not a bad thing, particularly for a cheap bed. It features two foam layers — a support foam and a memory foam comfort layer — wrapped in a breathable cover.

Our testing is intense and both mattresses have endured weight drops, testers rolling around and multiple long trips in a van. The Saatva also underwent a transatlantic flight and it still looks good enough for a five-star hotel. While both beds are holding up well so far, we predict the superior materials used in the Saatva Classic mattress will contribute to increased durability.

Saatva Classic vs Siena Signature: Comfort & Support

Both the Siena Signature and the Saatva Classic mattress have been through the wringer in our Sleep Lab and undergone an at-home testing period. Here are our results.

"Best-in-class" comfort

In our Saatva Classic mattress review we declared it has "best-in-class ability to quickly contour to your body and provide support where it’s most needed." So far it's the only bed we've awarded full marks for pressure relief to.

The pillow-top comfort layers quickly adjust to the pressure of your body, offering responsive cushioning as the Lumbar Support Zone holds your spine straight. It's an almost weightless feel and our lead tester credits the Classic with clearing up her lingering hip pain.

Our review team was unanimously impressed with the Luxury Firm Classic, declaring it the best hybrid mattress we've tested. However, our lightest weight side sleeping tester would opt for the Plush model. But that's another advantage of the Classic mattress; you can pick your feel.

Firm support for most sleep styles

The Siena delivers light contouring, courtesy of the memory foam comfort layer, but the overall feeling is firm. Our stomach sleeping lead tester loved it during the Siena Signature review period, and it appealed to our back sleeping testers as well.

But the Siena is less versatile than the Saatva. While some of our side sleeping testers liked it in short bursts (one even credits it with changing her feelings about firm beds) for most side sleepers it's just too hard. And unlike the Saatva, there's no option to change the firmness.

This image shows our sleep tester Ruth Jones lying on the Siena Memory Foam Mattress during the pressure relief test. She is lying on her back on the left hand side of the mattress, with a pillow for support. A laser, balanced on a tripod in the front of the shot, projects a red line on to her body. The line is positioned to follow the line of her spine. As the laser and her body are both aligned, we can see this is a good mattress for back sleepers.

The Classic is also the more responsive mattress, meaning it moves when you move to keep you cushioned. When you shift on the Siena, the surface hardly changes. That's not necessarily a bad thing and the flat, firm feel does keep the body lifted. However, the Classic has targeted support: it's firm where you need it firm, soft where you need it soft.

Both good picks for couples

There was one area of our testing where the Siena came out on top: motion isolation. Our human testers could hardly feel another person moving on the Siena, an observation supported by our accelerometer tests. While the Saatva has great motion isolation for a hybrid, it's not as good as the Siena.

And when it comes to edge support, these are the top two among our favorite mattresses. But the Saatva is the winner: the foam railings mean you can sit and lie against the sides without worrying you'll slide off.

Which means that while the Siena has better motion control, we still think the Saatva is the smart choice for couples. The edge support means you can use the full surface of the bed while the versatile feel suits you and your co-sleeper.

Saatva Classic vs Siena Signature: Temperature Control

We knew the Saatva and Siena were both breathable beds but it wasn't until we turned our thermal cam on them that we discovered they're among the best cooling mattresses.

The Saatva hardly absorbed any heat from our tester and what warmth it did take in, it steadily kicked out. For general hot sleepers, we think the Saatva Classic is a smart choice. Our lead tester described it as "the only mattress that's felt consistently cool to me."

Our thermal cam also showed the Siena didn't hang onto much heat and for the price bracket, it's likely the best cooling you're going to get. But to be honest, it lags behind the Saatva Classic, which feels silky cool to the touch.

Saatva Classic vs Siena Signature: Which should you buy?

Head-to-head in our Sleep Lab, the Siena was able to hold its own against tough competition, making it one of the best mattresses in a box we've tested. It's incredibly supportive with best-in-class motion isolation and edge support to trounce even mattresses more than three times the price.

If you have the budget for it, the Saatva Classic mattress really is the full package

However, when your competition is the Saatva Classic, the Siena just can't compete. The Saatva feels luxurious and the combination of gentle cushioning and enhanced support makes it the best mattress for back pain. And it suits almost every sleep style, thanks to its versatile firmness options.

The only area where the Siena undeniably pulls out in front is motion isolation, but that's primarily a question of build: the best memory foam mattresses are good at absorbing movement across the board.

Our image shows two of the Tom's Guide mattress testing team lying on the Saatva Classic in our Sleep Product Testing Lab, during a pressure relief test. It's easy to see from the image how both testers are kept on top of the mattress instead of sinking in deeply, giving a true reflection of just how good the Saatva Classic mattress is at balancing support and comfort for a wide range of body types

If you have the budget for it, the Saatva Classic mattress really is the full package. We think it's the best thing you can buy for your sleep and as well as an indulgent, durable design you also get market-leading benefits (including free white glove delivery, a premium service from many other brands.)

But if you can't stretch to the Classic, the Siena is the best you can buy in its price bracket, particularly for back and stomach sleepers. We don't think it will provide you with the long-term comfort of the Classic but its supportive build and top-notch motion isolation means if you want to save some money, you don't have to sacrifice your sleep.
