I’m a bedding expert and side sleeper — here’s how I choose the best pillow for sheer sink-in comfort

Sleep can have different meanings and associations for all of us. For me, it's a time for self-indulgence and plush, cozy comfort. Becoming a bedding tester has only enhanced that, particularly as I've learned the way pillows play a major role in achieving the comfy, luxuriously soft sleep experience I love.

As someone who is predominantly a side-sleeper (but sometimes sleeps on my back), I always opt for contouring, cloud-like pillows. But the sheer number of options available for can make finding your perfect pillow a chore. That's why we curated a guide to the best pillows for side sleepers after sleeping on and testing each option.

To make your search easier, I've listed a few factors which are absolute non-negotiables for me when pillow-shopping, plus my current top favorites. And, with the Labor Day mattress sales live, it's a great time to invest. Here’s everything I look for when choosing a pillow as a combination sleeper.

How I choose the best pillow for restful sleep

1. Assess the pillow loft

Pillow loft or height is a primary factor you should consider when choosing a headrest. From personal experience, sleeping on the wrong pillow height for your sleeping position can lead to neck pain or aches in the morning, and I'm sure at least some of you can relate to this.

For dominant side sleepers like me, it is ideal to go for a high loft pillow — typically five inches or taller. This ensures that the pillow fills the gaps between your ears and shoulder, which helps keep your body in alignment.

However, it's worth noting (as I do sometimes sleep on my back) that a medium loft pillow of three to five inches in height is generally best for back sleepers and can suit some side sleepers too, as it will prevent your neck from dipping toward your bed.

2. Check for quality materials

Next up, what is your pillow made of? It is crucial to opt for materials which will deliver maximum comfort and support for your sleeping position.

As a combination sleeper, I tend to lookout for materials like memory foam, natural down, down-alternative or latex blends which provide a cloud-like supportive feel. These are generally known for having a sink-in comfort that conforms to your shape and delivers the pressure relief for your head, neck and shoulders.

The idea is to strike a balance between plush comfort and responsive support — so designs using cheap materials that can easily flatten under the weight of your head are a definite 'no.'

3. Look for adjustability

In an ideal world (and even as a bedding tester) a simple, no-fuss pillow design that exactly suits my sleep needs is the dream option for me. And while it's possible to get a tailored pillow for your particular sleeping position, this can be an expensive option.

A more straightforward (and affordable) option is to go for an adjustable pillow. As the name suggests, these are crafted to allow customizable firmness and loft, generally by including extra fill that can be added (or removed) to create the perfect sleeping experience.

You're in control of the feel, firmness and comfort of your pillow, and you can change it at any time.
