Arguably the biggest decision USA captain Keegan Bradley had to make when selecting his 12-man team was whether he should be the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963. Luke Donald is back as Europe captain, the first since Bernard Gallacher in 1993 to double down, after leading the side to a 16½-11½ victory in Italy two years ago. Donald has selected 11 of the 12 to tee it up last time out, too, with the only change Rasmus Hojgaard who replaces twin brother Nicolai in the team.
That means reigning Masters champion Rory McIlroy, who complete the major set at August this year, will again be teeing it up, with Tommy Fleetwood – fresh from his first PGA Tour title in 164 attempts in the recent FedEx Cup – also automatic selections. Jon Rahm, now of breakaway tour LIV Golf, had to rely on a captain's pick but the Spaniard remains one of the best players in the game and will feature prominently. Plenty of eyes will be on Tyrrell Hatton, too, who has been known to love a party after a tournament win.
Home support could prove the difference at Bethpage, with the New York crowd likely to be especially vociferous. Indeed many regard an away Ryder Cup victory to be the toughest task in golf – Europe have won once on American soil in the past 20 years, and that took the infamous final-day Miracle at Medinah in 2012.

How does the Ryder Cup 2025 format work?
Both the USA and Europe have selected 12 golfers to do battle in the Ryder Cup, the sport's most famous team match play event.
Over the course of three days' dramatic golfing action, there will 28 matches, each of which is worth one point. That means the first to 14½ points is declared the winner. If the scores finish 14-14, then the winner of the previous edition of the event would retain the trophy. In this case, that would be Europe, who won at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in 2023.
On Friday and Saturday, two players from each side will team up to play four lots of foursomes, followed by four lots of fourballs. In foursome, sometimes also called 'alternate shot', there is only one ball per team in play and the players take it in turns to play. As the name would suggest, in fourballs there are four balls in play and each teams' lowest score on each hole will be taken.
On Sunday, it's more simple – both teams 12 singles matches to reach the 14½-point mark.
Captains Keegan Bradley for the USA and Luke Donald for Europe don't play, but do decide the pairings and order in which they send their players out. Tactics play a huge role.
