You can't change my mind, SpinTel is still my favourite NBN provider for unrivalled value

As Tom's Guide's resident NBN expert, it comes as no surprise that finding good home internet deals is my forte. Whether you're after a cheap NBN plan that doesn't break the bank, or want to compare options from the best NBN providers, I'm sure to find an offer you simply can't refuse.

One provider I keep coming back to, though, that I've found is unmatched in terms of speed and overall value is SpinTel. The homegrown telco is currently offering the cheapest NBN 500 plan, just AU$63p/m in the first half of the year. This knocks an impressive AU$143.70 off the total cost before the price increases to a modest AU$86.95p/m ongoing. When compared to the average rate of AU$94.54p/m for the tier at the time of publishing, you'll save AU$7.59p/m (or AU$91.04 per year) in the long run.

Breaking down this astronomically low price even further, the cost-per-megabit comes to a minuscule 17¢ — the second cheapest you'll pay for 500Mbps. (Technically, Exetel has the cheapest cost-per-megabit, at just 16¢, but that comes with an AU$80p/m ongoing rate attached.)

SpinTel | NBN 500 | AU$63p/m (for 6 months, then AU$86.95p/m)

Now the cheapest plan on the NBN 500 tier, SpinTel's offer costs just AU$63p/m for the first 6 months, before increasing to AU$86.95p/m ongoing. With 500Mbps downloads and 42Mbps uploads, SpinTel's Home Turbo plan is ideal for lag-free gaming, streaming, and remote work. Like other high-speed plans, you'll need an FTTP or HFC connection to order this service. SpinTel's Home Turbo plan works on a no-lock-in contract basis, includes unlimited data and offers optional extras, like a modem or phone line, alongside your plan.

Total minimum cost: AU$63 | Total first year cost: AU$899.70 | Yearly cost after discount: AU$1,043.40

Still less than 6 months since its debut, the NBN 500 tier is shaping up to be a mighty popular choice for families, particularly for larger households (and their accompanying devices). According to my research, NBN 500 plans readily provide more than enough bandwidth for 10 people or more, making it easy to game, stream, and work simultaneously without lag or interruptions.

It would be remiss if I didn't mention Dodo's AU$72.99p/m NBN 500 plan as an alternative to SpinTel, as its lengthy 12-month introductory offer is rather competitive, costing just AU$875.88 in the first year. That said, where SpinTel comes out on top is in its ongoing rate, AU$6 less than Dodo's rather expensive AU$92.99 after the discount ends.

The only factor to note here is that SpinTel's plans don't come with a modem as standard. However, the telco does offer a range of modem-router options to choose from. Ranging from AU$139.95 upfront for a TP-Link EasyMesh Gateway to AU$419.95 for a Pro Bundle with two mesh extenders, there are options suited to your needs if you opt for a SpinTel-supplied modem.

In most cases, I typically recommend BYO hardware, especially if you want one of the best Wi-Fi mesh systems that money can buy or if you plan to chop and change providers if a better deal comes along.

SpinTel's unparalleled value doesn't stop at its NBN 500 plan, though. The telco encompasses most NBN speed tiers, with great introductory offers to match. Another one of my top-rated picks is SpinTel's NBN 25 plan, which costs just AU$39p/m (for 6 months, then AU$64.95p/m ongoing). SpinTel's 25Mbps plan is a great NBN option for seniors or single-person households, as you can bundle a PAYG phone line or mobile plan into one monthly bill.
