Harold Godwinson (played by James Norton) was England’s last crowned Anglo-Saxon king while William, Duke of Normandy (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) was soon to be become William The Conqueror for obvious reasons. 

However, the story played out here is that the two men, related by marriage, once allies and comrades-in-arms, became embroiled in a rivalry that would eventually see them pitted against each other by circumstances beyond their control. 

As lead writer Michael Robert Johnson explains, "It makes sense that they respected each other because... they had common ground. Nobody goes, ‘I will change history,’ but people do because they're trying to solve their own problems."

Season 01 Episode 01: "Invitation" - In the mid-11th century, noblemen Harold of Wessex and William of Normandy are exploited as pawns in royal plots on both side of the Channel. The coronation of King Edward in England leads to the pair’s first encounter. Harold warns his father, Earl Godwin, of a rival’s treachery – but he is ignored.

S01 E02: "Sins of the Father" - Threatened by those in power in France and England, William and Harold each face grave danger, their families in peril. Refuge in Flanders offers hope for new mother Matilda, while vengeful Lady Emma hounds the Godwins.

S01 E03: "Sins of the Father" - Harold risks returning to Wessex for his wife, while William plots against Henry in France as home truths compromise family ties.

S01 E04: "So Be It" - Crowned heads are endangered as Harold fights for his family’s rights and William tracks his royal foe.

S01 E05: "TheBeast in the Mirror" - Harold and Edith risk their lives to bargain with William but get a guarded reception. Harold’s siblings face hardships trying to secure their family’s future.

S01 E06: "Damage" - Ambition drives William and Harold to each seek costly alliances, against the advice of their womenfolk, to enhance their chances of winning the crown.
