Milano-Sanremo 2026 Preview
Let’s cut to the chase, this race is about two men and two climbs. Mathieu Van der Poel, Tadej Pogačar, the Cipressa and the Poggio. For the first 270 kilometres we watch, we wait, we enjoy the scenery, we day dream of aperitifs on the Italian Riviera in Spring and then, then the race reaches the Cipressa and explodes like atoms in a particle accelerator.
It’s this wait, this build of tension, the hours of anticipation and then the climax that make this race so utterly compelling. Hitting the base of the Cipressa at ferocious speed the favourites will have their lieutenants drill the tempo up front while they wait in the shadows, saving their matches for the Poggio. To win Milan Sanremo everything has to be perfect on the day, perfect legs, perfect positioning, every single star must align and this has yet to happen for Tadej Pogačar but will 2026 be his year?
Of course it’s not just a race between these two mega talents, the cast of support actors is as stellar as it comes with a multitude of world class riders dreaming of crossing the famous finish line on Via Roma in first place. Champions like Wout Van Aert and Tom Pidcock, rising stars like Paul Magnier and Matthew Brennan together with seasoned sprinters in the shape of Jonathan Milan and Jasper Philipsen, the quality of the field is unmatched.
