Quick Picks: Prime Video Action Movies

  • "Bullet Train" (2022): Neon-soaked assassin showdown on a high-speed rail.
  • "Die Hard "(1988): The ultimate holiday action classic in a seized skyscraper.
  • "Ronin" (1998): Gritty mercenary heist featuring cinema's best car chases.
  • "Sisu" (2022): A relentless, gory revenge quest against a Nazi platoon.
  • "The Naked Gun" (2025): Slapstick reboot with Liam Neeson as the bumbling Frank Drebin.

Everyone's talking about the Super Bowl this weekend, but if you're not interested in tuning in, you're probably on the hunt for something else to keep you entertained while everyone else tunes in to see the Patriots and Seahawks battle for the NFL title. If you're on the hunt for Super Bowl LX counter-programming, Prime Video just might be the perfect place.

Having just scrolled through all the action movies available on Prime Video, here are the five I'd recommend to anyone looking for a burst of adrenaline this weekend.

Top action movies on Prime Video

'Bullet Train' (2022)

A couple of years before he delivered the underrated Ryan Gosling-led action flick, "The Fall Guy," David Leitch helmed "Bullet Train," an adaptation of Kōtarō Isaka's novel of the same name.

We follow Ladybug (Brad Pitt), an unlucky operative who is determined that his latest gig goes off without a hitch. He boards the eponymous bullet train in search of a briefcase full of cash... but this mission puts him on a high-speed collision course with a kooky cast of killers — including British brothers "Tangerine" and "Lemon" (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Brian Tyree Henry), "The Wolf" (Bad Bunny), and "The Hornet" (Zazie Beetz) — all with interlocking objectives.

'Die Hard' (1988)

Okay, yes, everyone's seen "Die Hard" (whether at Christmas or otherwise), but if we're talking about best action movies, I can't just ignore "Die Hard" if it's an available option, can I? It's a genre classic for a reason, and it remains a compelling action thriller no matter how many times you've seen it.

If you haven't seen "Die Hard" before, this seminal action movie sees New York City cop John McClane (Bruce Willis) landing in Los Angeles to visit his estranged wife for the holiday party. The festivities get put on pause when a group of armed thugs led by Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) busts in, seizes control of Nakatomi Plaza, and takes everyone inside hostage — everyone except McClane. Thus, our hero leaps into action and sets out to outwit the terrorists and save their hostages.

'Ronin' (1998)

Praised for its "strong action, dynamic road chase scenes, and solid performances" on Rotten Tomatoes, John Frankenheimer's "Ronin" is another solid option if none of Prime Video's more recent action-packed releases fit the bill.

The film sees a woman named Deirdre (Natascha McElhone) assembling a team of mercenary killers — including Sam (Robert De Niro), Vincent (Jean Reno), Gregor (Stellan Skarsgård), Spence (Sean Bean), and Larry (Skipp Sudduth) — to find and steal a briefcase (contents unknown). That MacGuffin's wanted by the Irish and the Russians, and those involved will do anything to get their hands on it...

'Sisu' (2022)

Jalmari Helander's "Sisu" is a bloody action thriller set during the Lapland War that pits Finnish Army Commando-turned-gold-prospector Aatami Korpi (Jorma Tommila) against a Nazi platoon led by Bruno Helldorf (Aksel Hennie), their brutal, corrupt officer. During their scorched-earth retreat from Finland, they steal Korpi's gold... and soon learn that they have crossed the wrong gold miner. It's a simple set-up and makes for a gory, violent revenge thriller wherein Korpi turns one-man-army to get his gold back, and should absolutely fit the bill if you're in the mood for some over-the-top action.

'The Naked Gun' (2025)

I'm rounding this list out with a very different kind of Liam Neeson-led action movie. If you're in the mood for something lighter, Akiva Schaffer's laugh-out-loud "Naked Gun" legacy sequel is the action-comedy you need to stream.

This 2025 follow-up to the classic Leslie Nielsen comedy trilogy puts Neeson in the driving seat as Lt. Frank Drebin Jr., who's followed in his father's footsteps as a hard-working member of Police Squad. In this outrageous sequel, Drebin has to put his particular set of skills to work trying to save the world in silly, slapstick fashion. I haven't stopped recommending "The Naked Gun" since it came to Prime Video; it's ridiculous, it's hilarious, and action-packed: what more could you want?
