What's your preferred sleeping position?
You might think price is the most important consideration when you’re buying a new mattress, and of course, it matters. But finding a mattress that will support you in your dominant sleeping position is essential if you want to rest well, night after night.
“The right mattress can improve your chances of falling asleep faster and waking up refreshed,” explains Claire Davies, Sleep Managing Editor at Tom's Guide and a Certified Sleep Science Coach.
The four main sleeping positions are side, back, stomach and combination, which means you move between positions at night. “Although it’s somewhat subjective, an ideal mattress cushions pressure points — particularly at the hips and shoulders — while maintaining healthy spinal alignment. Without that balance, you'll start to develop aches and pains,” says Claire.
Pressure points for side sleepers are the shoulders, hips and knees, “so softness and contouring is needed here to help you sleep comfortably. A soft to medium-firm mattress is the best choice for side sleeping,” she adds.

Back sleepers, she continues, should look for a mattress that has ample support layers and a focus on lumbar support. “You want to remain on top of the mattress and not sink down into it, as sinkage could cause your back to dip, leading to pain over the long-term.” Claire suggests a medium-firm mattress, though heavier sleepers may want to consider a firmer option.
For those who sleep on their stomachs, “choose a mattress that keeps you on top of the sleep surface to keep your spine in healthy alignment. Any dip in your lower back will create pain that will travel up to your neck,” says Claire. “Medium-firm mattresses are good for stomach sleepers, but softer beds are generally a no-no.”
