The hotel-style Saatva Classic and luxury Helix Midnight Luxe mattresses — here's how to choose between them
Two of the best mattresses in the US are on sale, but which one is best suited to you?
If you're looking for a touch of hotel luxury in your home, we've got the answer.
We're looking at our best mattress of the year, the Saatva Classic vs our best mattress for side sleepers, the Helix Midnight Luxe to see which offers the most luxurious night's sleep and is best suited to your sleeping style and body weight.
Both are luxury hybrid mattresses offering an excellent balance of support and comfort. And both are discounted in this year's Black Friday mattress deals, making it a perfect time to invest.
In fact, we're tracking the Saatva Black Friday sales live to bring you the latest discounts as they drop. So far, you can get $400 off the Saatva Classic by using our links. But don't worry, there's 27% off at Helix, too.

In our Saatva Classic mattress review, the mattress scored almost perfect marks in our testing, providing a perfect balance of comfort and support. With $400 off in the Saatva Black Friday mattress sales, it's currently at a low price that matches Labor Day discounts. You can pick up a queen size for $1,739 (was $2,139) and you'll also get industry-leading perks like a forever warranty, free white glove delivery and a 365-night sleep trial.
In our Helix Midnight Luxe mattress review, our testers struggled to find any faults with the bed, praising it for its cushioning comfort and support. Our exclusive TOMS27 code gives you 27% off in the Black Friday Helix mattress sales, taking a queen down to just $1,751.02 from $2,398.66, which is back down to its lowest price of the year. You'll also get a 120-night trial, lifetime warranty and free shipping and returns.
What we love about the Saatva Classic...
The Saatva Classic is the best hybrid mattress you can buy, combining coils and foams for a blend of support and comfort. Available in three firmness options, we tested the Luxury Firm, which is a great all-rounder at 5-7 out of 10 on the firmness scale.
Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips.
You only have to lie on the Saatva to appreciate the quality and it's one of the best luxury mattresses available. That is reflected in the price tag of course, but with $400 off for Black Friday, you won't find it cheaper at any other time of the year.
You'll also get free white glove delivery and old mattress removal, a lifetime warranty and a 365-night trial. The mattress arrives flat so there's no off-gassing to be concerned by, and it's ready to sleep on straight away
Immediate lumbar support and perfect pressure relief
Because you lie on top of the Saatva rather than sinking in, you might not expect it to offer much pressure relief. But, in fact, the plush pillow top still feels soft and slightly contouring around the pressure points, which lead to the Saatva scoring full marks in our pressure relief tests and being one of the best pillow top mattresses you can buy.
As our top pick in our best mattresses for back pain round up, the Saatva offers lumbar support from the minute you like down on it. Thanks to the specialized lumbar zone quilting, gel-infused foam and zoned coils, your spine will always be kept aligned and your lumbar zone supported, keeping aches and pains at bay.
Edge support also scored full marks in our testing and you can really spread out and utilize the full width of the mattress, as well as sit comfortably on it to get ready in the morning.
It will keep your temperature regulated through the night
The Saatva Classic aced our temperature tests, scoring 5 out of 5 again. With very little foam in the mattress, a cotton cover and breathable coils, air flows well around the mattress.
Though it doesn't have any specialist cooling features or fabrics, we still think it's one of the best cooling mattresses you can buy.
What we don't like about the Saatva Classic
Let's be honest, there's very little to dislike about the Saatva. If we were being pernickety, we'd point out that there is a tiny touch of motion transfer that very light sleepers might notice, and it also costs $99 to return the mattress if you don't get on with it.
What we love about the Helix Midnight Luxe...
If you're a dedicated side sleeper then the Helix Midnight Luxe should be top of your shopping list. It's the best mattress for side sleepers out there, offering plenty of cushioning and support where it's needed.
Our exclusive TOMS27 code gives you 27% off all sizes right now, taking a queen down to $1,751.02 from $2,398.66, which is back down to its lowest price of the year. You'll also get a 120-night trial, lifetime warranty and free shipping and returns.
The Helix arrives rolled and boxed, but despite this, our tester didn't notice any off-gassing as you might expect from a rolled mattress. You won't have to hang around waiting for the Helix to inflate either, as it's ready to sleep on after 45 minutes.
Lumbar support that means you can sleep on your back as well as your side
The Helix Midnight Luxe has a layer of the brand's ErgoAlign foam, which is denser in the middle to support your lumbar region. This is backed up by coils that are firmer in the center third of the mattress for added lumbar support.
Like the Saatva, the Helix will keep your spine aligned and supported, but if you feel there isn't quite enough lumbar support on offer, you can also upgrade and add an additional ErgoAlign layer for extra support. It's also a good choice of mattress for restless sleepers as motion isolation is superb.
Does the Helix keep you cool?
You won't be disappointed by the temperature regulation on the Helix Midnight Luxe but it was a smidge less impressive than the Saatva. The mattress has a breathable Tencel cover, along with coils to promote airflow and a layer of copper-infused foam (copper helps to draw heat away from the body).
However, if you are a particularly hot sleeper, we’d recommend upgrading to the GlacioTex cover, which will wick away any heat or moisture while you sleep, helping you to stay cool overnight.
What we don't like about the Helix Midnight Luxe
Like the Saatva, there's little to dislike about the Helix but edge support isn't quite as good as with the Classic. It's also not a great pick if you're a stomach sleeper, although Helix does make specific mattresses for this sleeping style.
Which luxury mattress should you buy in the Black Friday sales?
With Black Friday discounts bringing both these mattresses down to almost the same price, this is a great time to pick up your preferred choice.
If you're a dedicated side sleeper and enjoy some contouring around your body while you sleep, the Helix is the obvious choice. It will also support some back sleepers thanks to its excellent lumbar support but, if you're a really hot sleeper you will need to upgrade to the GlacioTex cover.
The Saatva Classic offers options to suit all styles of sleeper and has a more traditional innerspring feel, whereby you'll lie on top of the mattress rather than sinking in. Despite this, you'll get fantastic pressure relief, with plenty of soothing comfort. The Saatva is obviously the better all-rounder but, for those that it suits, the Helix is a fantastic option as well.

What Jo doesn't know about a boxed mattress isn't worth knowing, so naturally we tasked her with producing a series of features for Tom's Guide looking at all aspects of mattresses, from how to pick between latex and memory foam (it's a tricky one), to the seven mistakes people make when buying a mattress for the first time. When testing the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid for Tom's Guide, Jo said: "I loved the back support and pressure relief it offered. Plus, it looks far more expensive than it is." When she isn’t writing about sleep, Jo also writes extensively on interior design, home products and photography.
